Examines gender differences between 60 male and 67 female third graders concerning motivational orientation for correlation with incidence of depression. Results indicate that females were more often extrinsically motivated and more often depressed than males. Males were intrinsically motivated and had fewer incidents of depression than females. (JB)

Two studies with 277 intermediate grade students (106 males, 107 females, and 64 males and females) show that motivational orientations, measured by the scale of S. Harter (1981), are not distributed similarly across gender but that girls are more likely to be extrinsically motivated and influenced by adult feedback. (SLD)

Sixty-nine female college students report more depressive symptoms and more maladaptive attributional styles than 64 male college students as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory and the Expanded Attributional Style Questionnaire. A study involving 77 male and 95 female college students' responses to the Selves Questionnaire supports these findings. (SLD)
