Abstract

A mechanically‐static active diffuser with laser speckle reduction capability is demonstrated in this work. A nanoparticle‐doped liquid crystal medium with electrically‐activated time‐varying random domain is prepared and studied. It reduces the speckle contrast from 0.6 to 0.04, which is close to the reported detection limit of speckle by human perception, 0.03.

Abstract

We demonstrate a fast switching polymer-stabilized fringe-field switching (PS-FFS) liquid crystal mode device with plannar alignment using an ultraviolet-curable reactive mesogen. The polymer stabilization increases the azimuthal anchoring energy and improves the dynamic response. Abstract

A fast-switching polymer-stabilized chiral homeotropic (PS-CH) mode is demonstrated. The surface-localized polymers solved the causes of slow response of chiral homeotropic (CH) mode: defect annihilation and flow-induced optical bounce occur during electrical switching. Abstract

We demonstrate a fast‐switching optically‐compensated bend (OCB) configuration with polymerized liquid crystal photoalignment (PAL). The experimental results show the dependency of the electro‐optical properties of OCB cells on the morphology‐mediated surface anchoring of polymerized liquid crystal PAL. Furthermore, the polymerized liquid crystal PAL exhibits superior stability against UV exposure and thermal stress tests, which make PAL applicable in display and spatial light modulator applications.

Abstract

Free‐space volumetric displays is a three‐dimensional (3D) display technology without the needs of polarizer or shutter glasses for direct view or a screen for image projection. Here we present a volumetric display using a stack of active cholesteric diffusers. This display works by integrate each individual image and scans through a stacked active diffusers prepared by the reverse‐mode polymer‐stabilized cholesteric texture (R‐PSCT), which have high optical contrast and fast switching characteristics.

Abstract

This study explores the roles of aerosil gels dispersed blue phase (AG-d-BP) liquid crystals and the influence on thermal, optical and electro-optical behaviors of the resultant blue phase liquid crystal composites. Adding the aerosil nanoparticles in blue phase media leads to broadening the blue phase temperature range and reducing the switching voltage for a fast switching Kerr device. Additionally, the polarity-controlled nanoparticles enable one to stabilize the thermal-sensitive Bragg reflection property which opens pathways for applications such as active transformation optical elements and low power consumption displays. Abstract

We have demonstrated polymer dispersed blue phase (PDBP) liquid crystal films by encapsulating blue phase liquid crystal in a matrix of polymer. The phase-separated blue phase liquid crystal molecules show droplets with a small size distribution and exhibit a blue phase at room temperature. The PDBP films enable field-induced birefringence at low switching voltage. Details of preparation of PDBP and their thermal, optical and electro-optical properties will be presented.
