We demonstrated thermal curing encapsulation adhesive sheets for the flexible organic light emitting diodes. The thermal curing adhesive sheets were newly designed for the face-sealing encapsulation sheet and had sufficient interface adhesion between the device surface and gas barrier films, high optical transparency, and flexible properties.

We report an ultrasensitive and stable instrument for water vapor transmission rate evaluation. Water vapor permeated through gas barrier is condensed by a cold trap and measured by a mass spectrometer. Intermittent absorption and release operation of the cold trap enables the measurement immune to gradual change of background H2O.

A highly reliable ultra-high gas barrier (UGB) was developed and applied on the fabrication of 4.3-inch flexible AMOLED. The water vapor transmission rate of the UGB on flexible substrate could achieve ∼ 10−6 g/m2-day under a calcium test (60°C and 90%RH). In addition, a delamination method to remove the flexible AMOLED from the glass carrier was proposed where the mechanical strain during the delamination is controlled within 0.2%. With the incorporation of a metallic interlayer, the damage of TFT due to the electrostatic discharges from the delaminated surfaces can be prevented.

We have developed ultra-high gas barrier films fabricated by wet coating technologies of barrier-precursor and plasma assisted surface modifications. Owing to efficient coverage of wet process, our gas barrier films achieved 10−5 g·m−2 ·day−1 under 40 °C, 90%RH by only a few layer stack of the barrier layers.

The paper present transparent gas barrier technologies such as RF-sputtered inorganic nanolaminate, hydrophobic/hydrophilic surface modifications, and its measurements. Highly conformal and uniform deposition of Al2O3 and SiO2 barriers and hydrophilic dots on nano-imprinted hydrophobic surface structures successfully reduced water permeation rates according to the Ca degradation measurements.

The present work demonstrates transparent polymeric flexible gas barrier films, via mimicking structures of nature. SiO2 hydrophilic regions have been formed by mesh mask deposition and the nano-patterned hydrophobic surfaces were fabricated by nano-imprinting techniques. The characteristics of the moisture repellent hydrophobic surfaces and the moisture transfer from hydrophobic to hydrophilic regions are shown to yield enhanced moisture barrier performances.

We have developed a new high performance plastic substrate for flexible displays. The plastic substrate has a multi-layered structure composed of a newly developed base film, hard coat layers and gas barrier layers. The plastic substrate has a unique balance of excellent optical properties, high heat resistance over 200 °C, and practical mechanical strength.
