The article focuses on retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s president and CEO Lee Scott, who recently announced that his company is going green. Scott promised to raise the efficiency of the company's fleet of trucks by 25 percent and to reduce solid-waste production at its U.S. stores by the same amount over the next three years. He pledged to lower greenhouse-gas emissions at U.S. outlets by 20 percent over the next seven years. However, even the greenest big-box store is still hard on the environment, and Wal-Mart has a lot of big-box stores. The asphalt surrounding a 250,000-square-foot superstore produces 413,000 gallons of contaminated stormwater runoff for every inch of rain.
