The embarrassment caused by the expression "Brazilian philosophy" is common in the Brazilian philosophical milieu. This article analyzes the various reasons for such an embarrassment. This analysis reveals that the main way in which philosophy is practiced among us occurs despite Brazil itself. Here, as a rule, philosophy is undertaken in a culturally artificial environment. However, contrary to constituting proof of its inexistence, this isolation is precisely what characterizes Brazilian philosophy. It reveals itself as a cultural manifestation adapted to the "spirit of inconsistency" or to the "literary culture" - a characteristic of our way of life identified by various authors.
