The literature on professional socialization focuses on how students adopt and internalize professional identities and values, and assumes that boundary work is essential to learning how best to practice their profession. However, a focus on boundary work in the context of midwifery training - which is embedded in the gendered and hierarchical landscape of maternity care - is lacking. Thus, this article examines how Canadian student-midwives learn to navigate and negotiate interprofessional boundaries. Grounded in a symbolic interactionist approach, it draws on 31 semi-structured qualitative interviews from a mixed-methods national study on midwifery retention, explores how midwifery students make sense of the tensions among midwives, physicians, and nurses, and describes what strategies they utilize when navigating boundaries. Our analysis, based in constructivist grounded theory, revealed that participants learned about interprofessional tensions in clinical placement encounters via direct or indirect interactions with other healthcare professionals, and that strategies to navigate these tensions included educating others about midwifery training and adopting a learner identity. This article proposes that the process of professional socialization enables to reshape professional boundaries and that students are not only learners but also agents of change. Principles of aging-in-place emphasize the importance of creating sustainable environments that enable older people to maintain a sense of belonging, autonomy, independence, safety and security. Simply altering the built environment is insufficient for creating more inclusive environments for older persons, as creating ‘meaningful’ places for aging involves consideration of psychosocial and cultural issues that go beyond issues of physical space. This paper illustrates how applications of community-based participatory research methods, in particular, participatory community mapping workshops (PCMWs), can be used to access experiences of place, identify facilitators and barriers to accessing the built environment and co-create place-based solutions among older people and service providers in a new affordable housing development in Western Canada. Founded on tenets of empowerment and relationship building, four PCMWs were undertaken with 54 participants (N = 38 older people; N = 16 local service providers). PCMWs comprised (i) experiential group walks around the community to access understandings of place and community and (ii) mapping exercises, whereby participants articulated their place-based needs within the context of the new affordable housing development and surrounding neighbourhood. Dialogues were digitally recorded, transcribed and thematically analysed. Visual data, including photographs taken during experiential group walks were categorized and integrated into the narrative to illustrate place meanings. PCMWs enabled senior housing and social care professionals and decision-makers to co-construct knowledge with older tenants that facilitated place action and change. Key themes identified by participants included: identifying services and needs for health and wellbeing, having opportunities for social participation and overcoming cross-cultural challenges. Amidst a barrage of policy documents, bio-medical research, and press items concerned with the “crisis” of obesity, a growing scholarship is concerned with what has come to be known as “obesity stigma.” This scholarship hails from a range of sources including critical obesity scholars who problematize the idea of obesity as a health concern, as well as from “mainstream” organizations and researchers who, while maintaining obesity is a world-wide health problem, also argue that “obese” people are the targets of discrimination. In this paper, we analyze both interpretations of obesity stigma, particularly as that stigma applies to obese women's experiences of accessing and receiving reproductive care. We describe a qualitative study conducted with 24 overweight and obese women in 2 Canadian cities. Participants related overt and covert experiences of stigma when accessing reproductive care founded in healthcare practitioners' focus on fetal risk and “mother-blame” which, though partially evidence-based, was interpreted by participants as discriminatory. As such, we maintain that any true interruption of obesity stigma in the reproductive healthcare interaction requires a bridge between critical and mainstream scholarship, and careful attention to the risk-based foci in clinical settings which can be interpreted by clients as moralizing. As health and social service professions increasingly emphasize commitments to equity, advocacy and social justice, non-traditional entrants to the professions increasingly bring much-needed diversity of social backgrounds and locations. Long the domain of elite social classes, the professions are not always welcoming cultures for those from lower social class backgrounds. This paper draws on notions of material, social and cultural capital, along with habitus , to examine the experiences of professionals with lower-class backgrounds, in educational programs and in their professions. The critical interpretive qualitative study draws on interviews with 27 professionals across Canada in medicine, nursing, social work and occupational therapy. While participants were clearly set apart from their colleagues by class origins, which posed distinct struggles, they also brought valuable assets to their work: enhanced connection and rapport with clients/patients, approachability, structural analysis and advocacy, plus nuanced re-envisioning of professional ethics to minimize power dichotomies. Rather than helping lower-class entrants adapt to the professions, it may be more beneficial to alter normative professional cultures to better suit these practitioners. • People from lower-class backgrounds may struggle in the professions. • The material, social and cultural capitals expected cast them as cultural outsiders. • They may more readily enact the social justice and equity aims of the professions. • We need transformational change to professional cultures of elitism and exclusion. Providing a rural example of the interconnection between aging, emotion, time and place, this paper explores the intimate experiences of loss as older adults move into long-term care settings. Drawing on findings from a qualitative case study of transitions in care in rural Canada, we demonstrate the spatial and temporal dimensions of the experiences of older adults and their carers. In so doing, we highlight the benefits of embracing emotional geographies of care as a new lens in transitions in care research and outline emergent questions for research, policy and practice that will enhance knowledge in the field. • There is a gap in spatial and temporal understandings of loss in later life. • Emotional geographies of care consider rural age-related loss over time and place. • This new approach will uncover key insights into research, policy and practice. Recent research has shown that social integration, involving community integration and social support, can be protective resources for the health of homeless individuals. However, it is not clear how social integration affects health in the transition from homelessness into housing, and subsequent housing retention. This paper examines, through mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, how social integration changes over time, and how these changes relate to housing stability, substance use and mental health outcomes among a sample of homeless individuals experiencing mental illness participating in the At Home/Chez Soi Housing First randomized controlled trial in Canada. Longitudinal quantitative data (baseline, 6, 12, 24 month) and qualitative data (18 month) from the five trial sites (Moncton, Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver) were examined using mixed models, mediation analyses, and thematic analysis. Social integration (i.e., social network size, social interest, psychological integration) increased over time among study participants, with social network size increasing significantly more among Housing First participants than Treatment as Usual participants. Social network size mediated the effect of the intervention on the percentage of days in stable housing, indicating that the Housing First intervention may have increased participants' social network size, which in turn increased the percentage of days stably housed. No significant mediation of social integration on the effects of the intervention on mental health and substance use outcomes was found. Findings from the qualitative interviews support and expand upon these quantitative findings. • Social integration differed between Housing First (HF) and Treatment as Usual groups over time. • Social network size mediated the effect of HF on the percentage of days in stable housing. • HF programs should incorporate key service components that facilitate social integration. Why, in the early 21st century, has a publicly funded, publicly operated Canadian hospital incorporated the founding figure of the Sikh religion into its architecture and its identity? Drawing on qualitative research, this paper argues that the Guru Nanak Emergency Department is not an extension of the old tradition of naming hospitals after religious figures, but rather a novel development arising from the "super-diversity" of contemporary cities, the "spiritualizing" of healthcare ecologies, and the vigorous actions of Sikhs attempting to remedy social wounds and build 'healthy spaces' in the pluralistic urban environs they are part of.
