Previous research has shown that an energy-consumption measure of industrial economy correlates moderately strongly with cross-national variation in the rate of father-to-son occupational mobility when the latter is measured as total or observed mobility but not when only the circulation component of status change is considered, in this paper we extend that line of research by examining the hypothesized relationships of six other measures or correlates/industrial development rind growth: population distribution of educational attainments, extent of mass communications, urbanization, rate of geographic mobility, current and capital investments in education, and ethnic-linguistic diversity of population. This paper examines the effect of migration on the occupational prestige and mobility of about 4000 U.S. men aged 35-64 in 1951. The analysis is based on data from the 1951 Six City Survey of Labor Mobility. The findings show that migrants are superior to non-migrants, with few exceptions, in mean socio-economic statuses. Migrant superiority was due to initial advantages for men 35-44 only. Men over 45 who migrated lost part of their initial advantage relative to nonmigrants. The regression slopes describing the relationship among son's education, father's prestige level, and son's 1949 occupational prestige did not differ between migrants and nonmigrants. A fairly consistent interaction with age appeared in the data -- migrants 45 years and older suffered set-backs in their careers compared to younger migrants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine how career paths, job performance, affiliation ties, and race combine to affect who secures top jobs in an elite labor market. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis, we show that examining these traits in conjunction, rather than in isolation, reveals novel insights into how one reaches the top of an occupation. Specifically, we document how factors coalesce in various ways to propel a coach to or from the top of NCAA Division I basketball. Results are particularly informative regarding race and social ties, as the importance of these conditions depend on signs of success. These findings illustrate the importance of context and perception in occupational advancement and suggest the analytic benefit of viewing job applicants as attribute clusters when examining advancement at the highest levels of an occupation. The article focuses on occupational and geographic mobility in San Francisco from 1870 to 1890. The use of census and city directory information makes it possible to examine the social structure of a nineteenth century city, and to detail the geographic and occupational mobility that took place over a specified length of time. A detailed study of San Francisco in 1870 has revealed a social structure rigidly stratified along ethnic lines. The Chinese, blacks, women, southern and eastern Europeans, and the Irish were the most disadvantaged of the groups. All of them were disproportionately represented in the low manual occupational categories. White native mean were found in disproportionate numbers in the upper reaches of the occupational hierarchy, and the northern Europeans, Canadians, and British were somewhere between these two groups, clustering especially in the minor proprietor and skilled categories. Tracing individuals over time, however, has revealed a certain amount of fluidity. Geographically, there was a great deal of fluidity: almost 86% of the sample had left the city in twenty years, and about 68% of the sample changed addresses every decade. The occupational structure was also more fluid than was at first evident in 1870.
