We do this by reporting on interview data generated as part of a qualitative investigation into the working lives of 47 doctors. The analysis of the empirical findings is informed by two literatures: that which has sought to theorise the contemporary thrust of regulation and audit and that which has developed a sociology of embodiment. Doctors' views are presented in relation to four areas of work which have - in the loosest sense of the word - been subject to regulation. Drawing on work from the sociology of embodiment we argue that changes in the institutional and cultural context of medical work could be altering both the 'field' and the 'habitus'- to use Bourdieu's terms - of medicine, with a consequence that medical knowledge is becoming less embodied. A study examining the implications of use of Internet for health by lay people is presented.

There is evidence that poor sleep mitigates recovery from substance dependence and increases risk of relapse. However, to date research literature is located within biomedical, clinical and psychological paradigms. To complement the extant work, this article offers a sociological exploration of sleep in the context of recovery from dependence on alcohol and/or other drugs. Drawing on qualitative data generated through interviews with 28 men and women living in residential rehabilitation settings in England, we provide a detailed exploration of sleep practices focusing on how these are enacted throughout the night. We offer the concept of 'sleepfulness' to suggest that sleep should not be understood simply as being other than awake; rather it involves a myriad of associations between diverse actants - human and non-human - that come to 'fill up', enable and assemble sleep. Together these empirical insights and conceptualisations disturb the ontology of sleep and point to the fulsome dimensions of the category. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is a direct response to Wilkinson's (1996) call for more research into housing insecurity and health. It explores the consequences of mortgage arrears for both the health of indebted home owners and their use of primary health care services. It is based on the results of a secondary analysis of the British Household Panel Survey. It demonstrates that the experience of mortgage indebtedness has an independent effect on the subjective well being of men and women, and that it increases the likelihood that men will visit their general practitioners. The paper draws upon the sociological notions of 'ontological security' and 'individualisation' to make sense of these empirical findings. It suggests that policies which have encouraged the growth of home ownership are premised on the idea of individual responsibility, a notion which underpins other spheres of contemporary welfare policies. Within this context, the consequences of mortgage indebtedness are likely to have profound psychosocial consequences for those who have direct experience of it. The spectre of mortgage debt may also contribute to the insecurity which has come to form a feature of our contemporary social and cultural life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Health promotion specialists and health promotion services within the health service have been neglected by policy makers and medical sociologists. This is perhaps surprising, given the high profile of health promotion on the health policy agenda. This paper presents the findings of an exploratory sociological study into the nature and function of health promotion services within the 'reformed' British National Health Service. The analysis draws on qualitative interviews with health promotion specialists, directors of public health and other health workers whose work involves the promotion of health. The paper argues that health promotion services do not fit easily into the purchaser provider divide and that they have experienced considerable organisational change and uncertainty. Four factors have further compounded this lack of fit: a lack of consensus as to what health promotion specialists work should be about; a lack of any secure knowledge base; prevailing images of health promotion and of health promotion specialists; and feelings of vulnerability about the future of health promotion. Furthermore, health promotion specialists are finding it difficult to shed their principles and values and take on the dominant enterprise culture which is characteristic of the new public management. The paper concludes by suggesting three further reasons why health promotion specialists have been marginalised: their insecure occupational status which in turn is linked to a lack of jurisdiction associated with the content of their work; the contradictions which are inherent in the knowledge base of health promotion, and the increasing application of 'modernist' evaluative frameworks, derived from economics, to health promotion interventions. The mouth and teeth became the focus of a new body of knowledge in the mid-nineteenth century. Existing approaches to the emergence of the profession of dentistry have assumed that it occurred as a response to dental disease and have offered empirical/pluralistic accounts. This paper argues that such explanations are inadequate, and drawing on Foucault's concept of power/knowledge suggests an alternative explanation. An examination of the contagion beliefs at the turn of the century reveals how the mouth became a vulnerable boundary of particular significance; it became the orifice through which disease could enter and consequently it had to be rigorously guarded. During the early years (2020–2021) of the COVID‐19 pandemic, relatively little attention focused on experiences of people with long‐lasting symptoms, particularly young adults who were commonly understood to be invulnerable to serious effects of the virus. Drawing on narrative interviews with 15 adults in their twenties and living in the UK when they became ill with long COVID, we explore contextual factors which made their long COVID illness experience, and the wholescale disruption to their lives, challenging. We propose that existing adaptations of the concept of biographical disruption are problematic for this group, and instead suggest that ‘biographical retrogression’ may more accurately reflect these young adults’ experiences. For many of these young adults, their illness occurred at a crucial stage in forming or solidifying (presumed) adult trajectories. Secondly, the recency of long COVID did not allow for comparison with an existing ‘grand narrative’ of recovery, so the future course of their illness was not just unknown for them as individuals; there was no prognostic map against which to assess their symptoms. Thirdly, the lives of people with long COVID have been disrupted in the context of global societal disruption by the same virus, rendering their experiences both topical yet invisible.
