Aiming at the shortcomings of Chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA), which is easy to fall into local optimal value and imbalance between global exploration ability and local exploitation ability. To improve ChOA from the perspective of multi-strategy mixing, MSChimp was proposed, and the algorithm was applied to global optimization and minimum spanning tree problems. The main research work of this paper is as follows: (1) In the initialization stage of ChOA, an opposition-based learning strategy was introduced to improve the population diversity; Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) was introduced in the exploitation process to improve the convergence speed and accuracy of the algorithm in the later stage, so as to balance the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the algorithm. (2) The improved algorithm was compared with different types of meta-heuristic algorithms in 20 benchmark functions and CEC 2019 test sets, and was used to solve the minimum spanning tree. The experimental results show that the improved ChOA has significantly improved the ability to find the optimal value, which verifies the effectiveness and feasibility of MSChimp. This paper presents an improved arithmetic optimization algorithm that incorporates hybrid elite pool strategies to address the limitations of the arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). In AOA, the linear mathematical optimization acceleration (MOA) function cannot balance global exploitation and local exploration well. Therefore, the accuracy and convergence speed of the algorithm cannot be guaranteed. To improve the performance of AOA, this paper reconstructed a nonlinear MOA function, which is expected to balance the exploitation and the exploration of AOA. Furthermore, four hybrid elite pool strategies are integrated to enhance the ability to escape local optima. The proposed algorithm inherits the fast convergence of AOA and develops the performance of escaping local optima. Numerical experiment results on benchmark functions and engineering problems show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other compared meta-heuristic algorithms in terms of convergence speed and accuracy. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an Intelligent Transportation System, which in its turn is an application of the Internet of Things. The IoV is a network of connected vehicles that sends/receives messages. However, the moving nature of the vehicles in IoV networks raises a dynamic topology issue. Therefore, establishing effective and dependable communication pathways among vehicular nodes, contingent upon traffic density conditions, presents a growing challenge. As a result, the main contribution of this paper is to propose an efficient network optimization system involving a cluster-based network routing optimizer. The proposed method is a metaheuristic algorithm adapted as a clustering algorithm. For this purpose, the JAYA Algorithm (JAYA) was utilized and integrated with two clustering concepts extracted from K-means Clustering and Automatic Clustering, resulting in proposing JAYA Clustering Algorithm for IoV (JAYACIoV). Subsequently, the performance of the proposed algorithm was investigated utilizing 176 network testing scenarios, and extensive comparative evaluations were conducted against five algorithms from the literature. The results confirmed the superiority of the proposed system with a percentage of 64.82%, where the algorithms were ranked according to the percentage achievement of best results. It is well recognized that human societies and their problem-solving capabilities have evolved much faster than biological evolution. The inspiration from human behaviors, knowledge exchange, and transformation has given rise to a new evolutionary computation paradigm. Multiple research endeavors have been reported in the literature inspired by the diverse aspects of human societies with corresponding terminologies to describe the algorithm. These endeavors have resulted in piles of algorithms, worded differently but with more or less similar underlying mechanisms causing immense confusion for a new reader. This paper presents a generalized framework for these socio-inspired evolutionary algorithms (SIEAs) or socio-inspired meta-heuristic algorithms. A survey of various SIEAs is provided to highlight the working of these algorithms on a common framework, their variations and improved versions proposed in the literature, and their applications in various fields of search and optimization. The algorithmic description and the comparison of each SIEA with the general framework enable a clearer understanding of the similarities and differences between these methodologies. Efforts have been made to provide an extensive list of references with due context. This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. Meta-heuristics have been successfully applied to many complex optimization problems. One of the main reasons for its success is its ability to handle non-convex, nonlinear, multimodal, multi-variable, and multi-objective problems with easy implementation. However, the quality of the response of these algorithms to an optimization problem is highly susceptible to the control parameters, and few works aim to tune them or find tools that can improve the algorithms. The literature is rich in proposals for new algorithms, but not for improving existing ones. This paper presents different strategies for tuning and accelerating meta-heuristics using the first hybrid algorithm in the literature. The Lichtenberg algorithm is inspired by lightning and Lichtenberg figures and has been increasingly successfully applied to various optimization problems. However, a study of its best parameters has never been presented until now. After a discussion of the best tuning tools, its tuning parameters are performed using response surface methodology. Then, 14 versions are studied through 10 test functions using chaos theory and Lévy flights scenarios. After 13,500 simulations, the chaotic Lichtenberg algorithm equipped with the piecewise function and tuned parameters proved the best version with only 16% similarity to the original algorithm. Then, it was compared to the genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, gray wolf optimizer, salp swarm optimization, whale optimization algorithm, and dragonfly algorithm. Real-parameter single objective optimization has been studied for decades. In recent, a new setting is applied in this field based on the consideration that solving difficulty scales exponentially with the increase in dimensionality. Under the new setting, differential evolution (DE) still outstands in performance as before. Meanwhile, a new type of population-based metaheuristic—gaining–sharing knowledge-based algorithm, becomes a dark horse. Furthermore, ensemble of the above two types of algorithm is proposed in the literature. Although such ensemble shows good performance, provided that a more reasonable scheme is used for the communication between the constituent algorithms, better ensemble can be obtained. We believe that the new scheme should be with adaptiveness. In this paper, we propose an adaptive scheme for the communication. According to the scheme, individuals chosen based on fitness and lifetime are exchanged. In fact, in the field of DE, it is rare to consider lifetime of individual. However, lifetime is no less important than fitness in our scheme. In our experiment, our ensemble is compared with seven state-of-the-art algorithms. Contrast enhancement is an important pre-processing task for several image and video processing applications. The objective of a contrast enhancement method is to improve the quality of the visual information contained in the images for further processing. Due to the enormous challenges, it is still considered as an open research problem. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature based on spatial and fr uency domain techniques. Among them, the Incomplete Beta Function (IBF) is a popular scheme used for image contrast enhancement. In the IBF based image contrast enhancement technique, quality of an image is improved by two controlling parameters. Under such conditions, these parameters need to be tuned for obtaining better outcomes. In this paper, a new gray-scale contrast enhancement algorithm is introduced where, instead of tuning the controlling parameters of IBF experimentally, their near-optimal values are calculated with the help of a recently published meta-heuristic algorithm called Artificial Electric Field Algorithm (AEFA). The proposed method has been compared with many state-of-the-art techniques in terms of some standard metrics considering three different datasets, namely Kodak, MIT-Adobe FiveK and USC-SIPI. Cooperation search algorithm (CSA) is a new metaheuristic algorithm inspired from the team cooperation behaviors in modern enterprises and is characterized by fast convergence. However, for complex multimodal problems, it may get trapped into local optima and suffer from premature convergence for the shortcoming of population updating guided only by leading individuals. In this paper, the issue of low convergence efficiency and convergence accuracy of the CSA algorithm on complex multimodal problems is dramatically alleviated by integrating the mutation and crossover operators in DE algorithm. Experimental results demonstrate the better performance of CCSA on convergence speed and accuracy as compared to other existing optimizers. Furthermore, aiming at the problem that there is no universal approach for the multi-degree reduction in Ball Bézier surfaces under different interpolation constrains, we propose a new method to solve this problem by introducing metaheuristic methods, where the change of interpolation constrains is treated as the change of decision variables. The modeling examples show that the proposed method is effective and easy to implement under different interpolation constrains, which can achieve the multi-degree reduction in Ball Bézier surfaces at one time and can simplify the degree reduction procedure significantly. Human facial analysis (HFA) has recently become an attractive topic for computer vision research due to technological progress and mobile applications. HFA explores several issues as gender recognition (GR), facial expression, age, and race recognition for automatically understanding social life. This study explores HFA from the angle of recognizing a person's gender from their face. Several hard challenges are provoked, such as illumination, occlusion, facial emotions, quality, and angle of capture by cameras, making gender recognition more difficult for machines. The Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) was recently designed as a metaheuristic-based population optimization method, inspired by the Archimedes theory's physical notion. Compared to other swarm algorithms in the realm of optimization, this method promotes a good balance between exploration and exploitation. The convergence area is increased By incorporating extra data into the solution, such as volume and density. Because of the preceding benefits of AOA and the fact that it has not been used to choose the best area of the face, we propose utilizing a wrapper feature selection technique, which is a real motivation in the field of computer vision and machine learning. The paper's primary purpose is to automatically determine the optimal face area using AOA to recognize the gender of a human person categorized by two classes (Men and women). In this paper, the facial image is divided into several subregions (blocks), where each area provides a vector of characteristics using one method from handcrafted techniques as the local binary pattern (LBP), histogram-oriented gradient (HOG), or gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). Two experiments assess the proposed method (AOA): The first employs two benchmarking datasets: the Georgia Tech Face dataset (GT) and the Brazilian FEI dataset. The second experiment represents a more challenging large dataset that uses Gallagher's uncontrolled dataset. The experimental results show the good performance of AOA compared to other recent and competitive optimizers for all datasets. In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has led to the spread of cloud computing devices in all commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors. The use of cloud computing environment services is increasing exponentially with all technology applications based on IoT. Fog computing has led to addressing issues in cloud computing environments. Fog computing reduces load balancing, processing, bandwidth, and storage as data file replication from the cloud to the network closest to sensors in different geographic locations. There are three critical issues:—what data should be replicated?—when should the data be replicated? and—where the new replicas should be placed? These three main open questions must be tackled for data replication in the cloud environments. This strategy, the identification and mode of the data replication problem are designed as a multi-objective optimization with modern meta-heuristic optimization method. Therefore, a new hybrid method using Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a new hybrid metaheuristic method, using the Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm (AOA) and the salp swarm algorithm (SSA), is proposed to handle the problem of selection and placement data replication in fog computing. Secondly, the Floyd algorithm is used to strategy the least cost path, distance, and data transmission in different geographic locations. The performance of the designed AOASSA strategy to tackling the data replication problem is evaluated using different datasets of different sizes. To validate the AOASSA strategy, a set of experiments was carried out to validate the proposed strategy AOASSA. In this paper, a new U-shaped assembly line balancing problem is studied. For the first time, the criteria such as equipment cost, number of stations and activity performing quality level are considered to be optimized simultaneously by activity to station and worker to station decisions. For this aim, a multi-objective nonlinear formulation is proposed and its linearized version is also presented. Since, according to the literature, the U-shaped assembly line balancing problem with equipment requirements is an NP-hard problem, the problem of this study is NP-hard too. Because of this complexity, the classical algorithms like simulated annealing, variable neighborhood search, and classical genetic algorithm with a novel encoding/decoding scheme are used as solution approaches. As an extension, two hybrid versions of the proposed classical algorithms are proposed according to the characteristics of the problem. In order to evaluate the proposed meta-heuristics, because the problem is new, some test problems are generated randomly. Computational study of the paper, including sensitivity analysis of the proposed meta-heuristics and final experiments on the test problems, proves the superiority of the hybrid versions of the classical algorithms. The knapsack problem is one of the combinational optimization issues. This problem is an NP-hard problem. Soft computing methods, including the use of metaheuristic algorithms, are one way to deal with these types of problems. The standard Giza Pyramids Construction (GPC) algorithm is the first ancient-inspired algorithm that is published recently. In this paper, a binary version of the GPC algorithm for solving the 0-1 knapsack problem is proposed. For this purpose, this study uses both accumulative and multiplicative penalty functions as the objective function to determine infeasible solutions. To compare the performance, thirty different datasets have been created and the proposed algorithm has been compared with four popular and state-of-the-art algorithms. Statistical analysis has been used to find a significant difference in the performance of algorithms. Over the last decade, the size and complexity of real-world problems have grown dramatically, necessitating more effective tools. Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have proven to be a promising tool for solving such problems due to their performance in a variety of fields. JAYA algorithm is a novel population-based algorithm which could have been able to present reliable results. This is because it does not need any parameters to be set other than the population size and the maximum number of iteration. Despite its positive feedbacks, this algorithm should be modified to witness more efficiency. This paper aims to amend the original version of Jaya to present a high-efficiency version named Powerful Enhanced Jaya (PEJAYA). In other words, the methodology of updating position in Jaya is modified to enhance the convergence and search capabilities. This approach is assessed according to solve 20 well-known benchmark functions, feature selection, and statistical tests. The output results of proposed optimization algorithm are then evaluated by comparing it with other recent algorithms including crow search algorithm (CSA), standard version of JAYA, particle swarm optimization (PSO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), moth-flame optimization (MFO) and sine–cosine algorithm (SCA). Solving a real-world problem is another way of checking the efficiency of this approach with other published works. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. Research that focuses on the performance improvement of metaheuristics is important to gain understanding on the characteristic of specific algorithm. Better understanding of metaheuristics method will bring benefit when it comes to implement the methods to solve real problems. This paper studies the effect of local information sharing on the performance of soccer game optimization with suitable control parameter settings. A novel method, called soccer game optimization with local information sharing (SGOLS), has been proposed in this paper. The method implements local information derived from several nearby players to conduct move forward. Therefore, the move forward will consider the position of the ball dribbler, the previous best player position as well as the position of players nearby. The proposed method is evaluated based on 20 unconstraint continuous problems, consisting of unimodal function and multimodal functions, and compared to SGO, PSO and DE. The experiment result reveals that the local information sharing could enhance intensification search in SGOLS. The proposed methods perform better in high-dimensionality problems than SGO, PSO and DE. The main goal of this paper is to outline a new approach to represent the randomness that we can find in different metaheuristics as a stochastic process which helps in the performance of the analyzed metaheuristic. This new way of viewing randomness is based on the behavior of sine waves that we can find in many situations in nature or in physics laws. In this paper, we evaluate this proposed randomness with three metaheuristics: the grey wolf optimizer, firefly algorithm and flower pollination algorithm, with the goal of studying the performance of the proposed randomness method in different types of metaheuristics. A set of standard benchmark functions were used to test the proposed randomness method, which are classified as unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions. In addition, the benchmark functions of the CEC 2015 Competition are used. Finally, we present tests with functions that were presented in the CEC 2017 competition for constrained real-parameter optimization. We also present a comparative study of the analyzed metaheuristics, and this comparison is between their original randomness method and the proposed randomness method for each algorithm. Data analysis becomes more important since rapid technology developments. In data analysis, data clustering is one of the very useful approaches. It can reveal important information hiding inside the dataset by organizing the instances based on their similarity. The objectives of data clustering are maximizing dissimilarity between clusters and minimizing dissimilarity within clusters. In order to construct a good clustering results, many clustering algorithms have been proposed, including the metaheuristic-based clustering algorithms. Recently, a new metaheuristic algorithm named gradient evolution has been proposed. This algorithm shows a good performance on solving the optimization problems. Therefore, this paper employs this GE algorithm for solving the clustering problem. In order to obtain a better clustering result, this paper considers multi-objective clustering instead of single-objective clustering. In this paper, the original GE algorithm is improved so then it is suitable for the multi-objective problem. The proposed modification includes the procedure for vector updating and jumping which involves Pareto rank assignment. In addition, it also employs K-means algorithm to provide the final clustering result. The proposed algorithm is verified using some benchmark datasets. It is also compared with some other multi-objective metaheuristic-based clustering algorithms. In this paper, a novel optimization algorithm is proposed by hybridizing firefly and whale optimization algorithms and it is applied to the problem of determining optimal design parameters of model predictive control. The developed hybrid algorithm is compared with firefly and whale optimization algorithms considering unimodal, multimodal, composite and CEC-C06 2019 benchmark optimization problems in terms of statistical analysis. Comparison results showed that hybrid algorithm has the best performance for approximately 67% of 39 benchmark functions in finding the minimum in an average of independent 100 experiments for each function. For the functions in which the proposed algorithm gives the best results, approximately 64% improvement is achieved compared to FA and 39% improvement compared to WOA. In terms of convergence speed, in average 2% of improvement is obtained. As an application to engineering problems, optimization of parameters of the model predictive control for inverted pendulum and distillation column is considered and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with the performances of firefly algorithm and whale optimization algorithm. For the considered applications, a novel objective function is selected. The selected objective function for hybrid firefly–whale optimization algorithm enables finding the optimal prediction horizon and control horizon as well as the Q and R matrices such that the system responses satisfy desired settling time and maximum overshoot criteria. In this paper, we present a novel hybrid metaheuristic for the Knapsack Problem with Forfeits (KPF). KPF is a recently introduced generalization of the Knapsack Problem. In this variant, a penalty cost incurs whenever both items composing a so-called forfeit pair belong to the solution. Our proposed algorithm, called GA–CG Forfeits, combines the strengths of the Genetic and Carousel Greedy paradigms. In this work, we define the algorithm and compare it with two previously proposed heuristics on a set of benchmark instances. Parameter-free algorithms are of an increasing interest in applications that require out-of-the-box solving techniques. For instance, scheduling in volatile environments or control parameters optimisation often requires flexible solving approaches without the need to tune or retune the parameters. In addition, parameter-free algorithms are usually beneficial in solving previously unexplored real-world problem instances. In this paper, we propose a parameter-free local search strategy to solve graph colouring, which is the underlying problem for a number of scheduling applications. Two variants of parameter-free local search are computationally investigated: PFLS-A and PFLS-B. Both of these algorithms are based on accepting strictly improving moves and operating as a random walk if no strictly improving move is found. PFLS-A and PFLS-B differ in randomised versus systematic exploration of the neighbourhood of the current solution. Their cooperative variant CPFLS is also proposed. We compare the results of these three algorithms to the results obtained by 13 other local search methods from the literature. CPFLS provides better or equal results as the other local search algorithms in 67.25 % of per-instance comparisons. This is without employing any explicit or implicit parameters that are usually used in metaheuristics. One of the most common tasks of groundwater engineers is to estimate aquifer parameters from transient time-drawdown data which are measured during the execution of pumping tests. The classical method consists in the manual superimposition of the observed time-drawdown data over a type-curve, and the appreciation of the goodness-of-fit is left to the visual inspection of the engineer. The present paper proposes a computerized method based on a new hybrid algorithm named CSARao-1. It combines two recent metaheuristic algorithms: the crow search algorithm (CSA) and Rao-1 algorithm for the optimal aquifer parameters estimation, which inherits the advantages of both algorithms. The CSARao-1 hybrid algorithm along with CSA and Rao-1 algorithm was applied in conjunction with both the Theis solution to analyze time-drawdown datasets coming from confined aquifers systems and the Hantush and Jacob solution to analyze datasets coming from leaky aquifers systems. The proposed approach was coded in FORTRAN programming language and evaluated on fourteen time-drawdown datasets coming from different confined and leaky aquifers systems. The results obtained using CSARao-1 hybrid algorithm were compared to those obtained by applying CSA and Rao-1 algorithm separately, and to those recently published. Globally, the proposed CSARao-1 hybrid algorithm was found to exhibit more accuracy, better robustness and higher rate of convergence over the analyzed transient time-drawdown datasets. Class imbalance problems have attracted the research community, but a few works have focused on feature selection with imbalanced datasets. To handle class imbalance problems, we developed a novel fitness function for feature selection using the chaotic salp swarm optimization algorithm, an efficient meta-heuristic optimization algorithm that has been successfully used in a wide range of optimization problems. This paper proposes an AdaBoost algorithm with chaotic salp swarm optimization. The most discriminating features are selected using salp swarm optimization, and AdaBoost classifiers are thereafter trained on the features selected. Hierarchical linear models are widely used in many research disciplines and estimation issues for such models are generally well addressed. Design issues are relatively much less discussed for hierarchical linear models but there is an increasing interest as these models grow in popularity. This paper discusses the G-optimality for predicting individual parameters in such models and establishes an equivalence theorem for confirming the G-optimality of an approximate design. Because the criterion is non-differentiable and requires solving multiple nested optimization problems, it is much harder to find and study G-optimal designs analytically. We propose a nature-inspired meta-heuristic algorithm called competitive swarm optimizer (CSO) to generate G-optimal designs for linear mixed models with different means and covariance structures. We further demonstrate that CSO is flexible and generally effective for finding the widely used locally D-optimal designs for nonlinear models with multiple interacting factors and some of the random effects are correlated. Our numerical results for a few examples suggest that G and D-optimal designs may be equivalent and we establish that D and G-optimal designs for hierarchical linear models are equivalent when the models have only a random intercept only. Segmentation of image is a key step in image analysis and pre-processing. It consists of separating the pixels into different segments based on their intensity level according to threshold values. The most challenging job in segmentation is to select the optimum threshold values. Standard multilevel thresholding (MT) techniques are effective for bi-level thresholds due to their simplicity, robustness, decreased convergence time and precision. As the level of thresholds increases, computational complexity also increases exponentially. To mitigate these issues various metaheuristic algorithm are applied to this problem. In this manuscript, a new hybrid version of the Dragonfly algorithm (DA) and Firefly Algorithm (FA) is proposed. DA is an optimization algorithm recently suggested based on the dragonfly's static and dynamic swarming behavior. DA's worldwide search capability is great with randomization and static swarm behavior, local search capability is restricted, resulting in local optima trapping alternatives. The firefly algorithm (FA) is influenced by fireflies' social behavior in which they generate flashlights to attract their mates. The suggested technique combines the ability to explore DA and firefly Algorithm's ability to exploit to obtain ideal global solutions. In this paper, HDAFA is applied on ten standard test images having a diverse histogram, which are taken from Berkeley Segmentation Data Set 500 (BSDS500) benchmark image set for segmentation. The search capability of the algorithm is employed with OTSU and Kapur's entropy MT as an objective functions for image segmentation. The proposed approach is compared with the existing state-of-art optimization algorithms like MTEMO, GA, PSO, and BF for both OTSU and Kapur's entropy methods. Qualitative experimental outcomes demonstrate that HDAFA is highly efficient in terms of performance metric such as PSNR, mean, threshold values, number of iterations taken to converge and image segmentation quality. In recent decades, researches on optimizing the parameter of the artificial neural network (ANN) model has attracted significant attention from researchers. Hybridization of superior algorithms helps improving optimization performance and capable of solving complex applications. As a traditional gradient-based learning algorithm, ANN suffers from a slow learning rate and is easily trapped in local minima when training techniques such as gradient descent (GD) and back-propagation (BP) algorithm are used. The characteristics of randomization and selection of the best or near-optimal solution of metaheuristic algorithm provide an effective and robust solution; therefore, it has always been used in training of ANN to improve and overcome the above problems. New metaheuristic algorithms are proposed every year. Therefore, the review of its latest developments is essential. This article attempts to summarize the metaheuristic algorithms which have been proposed from the year 1975 to 2020 from various journals, conferences, technical papers, and books. The comparison of the popularity of the metaheuristic algorithm is presented in two time frames, such as algorithms proposed in the recent 20 years and those proposed earlier. Then, some of the popular metaheuristic algorithms and their working principle are reviewed. This article further categorizes the latest metaheuristic search algorithm in the literature to indicate their efficiency in training ANN for various industry applications. More and more researchers tend to develop new hybrid optimization tools by combining two or more metaheuristic algorithms to optimize the training parameters of ANN. Artificial neural network (ANN) is modeled to predict and classify problems. However, in the training phase of ANNs discovering faultless values of the weights of a network is extremely troublesome. Traditional weight updating methods often get stuck into local optima and converge to optimal solutions very slowly. Therefore, to overcome these drawbacks a modified version of a nature-based algorithm which merges meta-heuristics with weight-updating technique of ANN has been used in this paper. Whale optimization algorithm (WOA) is a well-established, efficient and competitive algorithm inspired by the hunting mechanism of the whales including their behavior in finding and attacking their prey with their bubble-net feeding technique. In WOA, the next location of the search individuals or whales is modified depending on some probability. Due to the high exploration rate of WOA, there is a disproportion between exploration and exploitation in the WOA and it also converges to the solution slowly. Thus, to establish an equilibrium between exploration and exploitation a new variant of WOA called modified whale optimization algorithm (MWOA) is proposed to overcome the problem of delayed convergence. In MWOA, roulette wheel selection is combined with WOA to enhance the convergence speed of WOA. MWOA is tested on 11 benchmark functions, and the outcomes are compared with WOA. The results prove that MWOA has gained success in overcoming the problem of the slow convergence of WOA. The gaining sharing knowledge based optimization algorithm (GSK) is recently developed metaheuristic algorithm, which is based on how humans acquire and share knowledge during their life-time. This paper investigates a modified version of the GSK algorithm to find the best feature subsets. Firstly, it represents a binary variant of GSK algorithm by employing a probability estimation operator (Bi-GSK) on the two main pillars of GSK algorithm. And then, the chaotic maps are used to enhance the performance of the proposed algorithm. Ten different types of chaotic maps are considered to adapt the parameters of the GSK algorithm that make a proper balance between exploration and exploitation and save the algorithm from premature convergence. To check the performance of proposed approaches of GSK algorithm, twenty-one benchmark datasets are taken from the UCI repository for feature selection. The performance is measured by calculating different type of measures, and several metaheuristic algorithms are adopted to compare the obtained results. The results indicate that Chebyshev chaotic map shows the best result among all chaotic maps which improve the performance accuracy and convergence rate of the original algorithm. This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic-based optimization technique called search space reduction (SSR) optimization algorithm. This algorithm attempts to solve the common pitfalls in the existing algorithms in the literature by randomly generating the search agents in every iteration instead of following the best solution. This new algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, which is based on the concept of reducing the search space. The performance of this algorithm is tested over classical test functions and CEC'17 benchmark test functions. The results are compared with well-established algorithms in the literature. The test results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits good exploration and exploitation capabilities. Further, this algorithm also outperforms other algorithms in solving multimodal optimization problems. In addition to this, the computational complexity of this algorithm is also presented according to CEC'17 guidelines. Meta-heuristic algorithms have shown promising results in solving various optimization problems. The crow search algorithm (CSA) is a new and effective meta-heuristic algorithm that emulates crows' intelligent group behavior in nature. However, it suffers from several problems, such as trapping into local optimum and premature convergence. This paper proposes an improved crow search algorithm (ICSA), which has been tested and evaluated by a set of well-known benchmark functions. A new update mechanism that uses the merits of the global best position to move toward the best position is proposed. This mechanism increases the convergence of the algorithm and improves its local search-ability. Twenty benchmark functions are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed ICSA. Moreover, the ICSA algorithm is compared with the conventional CSA and other meta-heuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), gray wolf optimizer (GWO), moth-flame optimization (MFO), and sine-cosine algorithm (SCA). The experimental result shows that the proposed ICSA algorithm has produced promising results and outperformed conventional CSA and other meta-heuristic algorithms. Today, there are a lot of useful algorithms for covering array (CA) generation, one of the branches of combinatorial testing. The major CA challenge is the generation of an array with the minimum number of test cases (efficiency) in an appropriate run-time (performance), for large systems. CA generation strategies are classified into several categories: computational and meta-heuristic, to name the most important ones. Generally, computational strategies have high performance and yield poor results in terms of efficiency, in contrast, meta-heuristic strategies have good efficiency and lower performance. Among the strategies available, some are efficient strategies but suffer from low performance; conversely, some others have good performance, but is not such efficient. In general, there is not a strategy that enjoys both above-mentioned metrics. In this paper, it is tried to combine the genetic algorithm and the Augmented Lagrangian Particle Swarm Optimization with Fractional Order Velocity to produce the appropriate test suite in terms of efficiency and performance. Also, a simple and effective minimizing function is employed to increase efficiency. Cloud computing delivers practical solutions for long-term image archiving systems. Cloud data centers consume enormous amounts of electrical energy that increases their operational costs. This shows the importance of investing on energy consumption techniques. Dynamic placement of virtual machines to appropriate physical nodes using metaheuristic algorithms is among the methods of reducing energy consumption. In metaheuristic algorithms, there should be a balance between both exploration and exploitation aspects so that they can find better solutions in a search space. Exploration means looking for a solution in a wider area, while exploitation is producing new solutions from existence ones. Artificial bee colony optimization, which is a biological metaheuristic algorithm, is a sign-oriented approach. It has a strong exploration ability, but a relatively weaker exploitation power. On the other hand, tabu search is a popular algorithm that shows better exploitation in comparison with ABC. In this study, cloud computing environments are detailed with an allocation protocol for efficient energy and resource management. The technique of energy-aware allocation splits data centers (DCs) resources among client applications end routes to enhance energy efficacy of DCs and also achieves anticipated quality of service (QoS) for everyone. Heuristic protocols are exercised for optimizing the distribution of resources to upgrade the efficiency of DC. In the current paper, energy-aware resources allotment technique is employed and optimized in clouds via a new approach called Tabu Job Master (JM). Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) is a new type of metaheuristic and has shown superiority over other well-known algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization and Grey Wolf Optimizer in solving challenging optimization problems. Despite its superior performance, SSA still has problems such as insufficient convergence speed. Moreover, its local optima avoidance ability is not as good as those evolutionary algorithms using crossover operators. In this paper, we propose a modified Salp Swarm Algorithm (m-SSA) which improves the exploitation and exploration of SSA by integrating random walk strategy and especially enhances exploration by adding a new controlling parameter. In addition, a simulated annealing-type acceptance criterion is adopted to accept the fittest follower position as the new best leader position. The performance of the proposed algorithm is benchmarked on a set of classical functions and CEC2014 test suite. The proposed algorithm (m-SSA) outperforms SSA significantly on most test functions. When compared with other state-of-the-art metaheuristics, it also presents very competitive results. Nature has been considered as an inspiration of several recent meta-heuristic algorithms. This paper firstly studies and mimics the behavior of Scottish red deer in order to develop a new nature-inspired algorithm. The main inspiration of this meta-heuristic algorithm is to originate from an unusual mating behavior of Scottish red deer in a breading season. Similar to other population-based meta-heuristics, the red deer algorithm (RDA) starts with an initial population called red deers (RDs). They are divided into two types: hinds and male RDs. Besides, a harem is a group of female RDs. The general steps of this evolutionary algorithm are considered by the competition of male RDs to get the harem with more hinds via roaring and fighting behaviors. By solving 12 benchmark functions and important engineering as well as multi-objective optimization problems, the superiority of the proposed RDA shows in comparison with other well-known and recent meta-heuristics. Differential evolution (DE) is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm that has been proved powerful in solving a wide range of real-parameter optimization tasks. However, the selection of the mutation strategy and control parameters in DE is problem dependent, and inappropriate specification of them will lead to poor performance of the algorithm such as slow convergence and early stagnation in a local optimum. This paper proposes a new method termed as Joint Adaptation of Parameters in DE (JAPDE). The key idea lies in dynamically updating the selection probabilities for a complete set of pairs of parameter generating functions based on feedback information acquired during the search by DE. Further, for mutation strategy adaptation, the Rank-Based Adaptation (RAM) method is utilized to facilitate the learning of multiple probability distributions, each of which corresponds to an interval of fitness ranks of individuals in the population. The coupling of RAM with JAPDE results in the new RAM-JAPDE algorithm that enables simultaneous adaptation of the selection probabilities for pairs of control parameters and mutation strategies in DE. The merit of RAM-JAPDE has been evaluated on the benchmark test suit proposed in CEC2014 in comparison to many well-known DE algorithms. The results of experiments demonstrate that the proposed RAM-JAPDE algorithm outperforms or is competitive to the other related DE variants that perform mutation strategy and control parameter adaptation, respectively. In the last 3 decades, metaheuristic algorithms have received more popularity because of their superior performance to solve large and complex optimization problems. Most of these algorithms are inspired by biological phenomena, social behavior of animals, science and art. Among these four sources, the last one is utilized only by one algorithm. In this paper, we propose another novel art-inspired population-based metaheuristic, called color harmony algorithm (CHA), for solving the global optimization problems. The proposed method models its search behavior through combining harmonic colors based on their relative positions around the hue circle in the Munsell color system and harmonic templates. We utilize simultaneously four different fitness information to construct the hue groups, which improve search ability of the algorithm. CHA has two different phases including the concentration phase and the dispersion phase which are employed to explore and exploit the search space. The performance of the proposed method has been examined using several benchmark test functions commonly used in the literature. To show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method, the results are compared with those obtained using ten well-known metaheuristic algorithms. Also, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test is conducted to measure the pair-wise statistical performances of the algorithms. The results indicate that besides the simplicity of the proposed algorithm, CHA can outperform the other considered algorithms in terms of the convergence speed and the number of function evaluations. In high-dimensional data, many of the features are either irrelevant to the machine learning task or are redundant. These situations lead to two problems, firstly overfitting and secondly high computational overhead. The paper proposes a feature selection method to identify the relevant subset of features for the machine-learning task using wrapper approach. The wrapper approach uses the Binary Bat algorithm to select the set of features and One-pass Generalized Classifier Neural Network (OGCNN) to evaluate the selected set of features using a novel fitness function. The proposed fitness function accounts for the entropy of sensitivity and specificity along with accuracy of classifier and fraction of selected features. The fitness function is compared using four classifiers (Radial Basis Function Neural Network, Probabilistic Neural Network, Extreme Learning Machine and OGCNN) on six publicly available datasets. One-pass classifiers are chosen as these are computationally faster. The results suggest that OGCNN along with the novel fitness function performs well in the majority of cases. In this paper, a new bat algorithm (BA) based on dynamic control parameters selection is presented. The dynamic BA (DBA) uses a new mechanism to dynamically select the best performing combination of the pulse rate coefficient, the pulse frequency coefficient, and the population size. A fractional-order PID (FOPID) controller based on the DBA is implemented to improve the performance of a distillation column process. The proposed FOPID controller is used to control the distillate and bottom mole fractions. The influence of the feed rate disturbance is considered for this model. The efficacy of the DBA-based FOPID is compared with the performance of the controllers based on the conventional BA, directional BA, enhanced BA, genetic algorithm, and particle swarm optimization algorithm. Clustering Search ( *CS) has been proposed as a generic way of combining search metaheuristics with clustering to detect promising search areas before applying local search procedures. The clustering process may keep representative solutions associated with different search subspaces. In this paper, new approaches are proposed, based on *CS, as an Artificial Bee Colony-based one, which detects promising food sources alike *CS approaches. The other new *CS approach is based on Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm. The DE is just a CS component (the evolutionary algorithm), different from ABC-based approach, called Artificial Bee Clustering Search (ABCS). ABCS tries to find promising solutions using some concepts from CS. The proposed hybrid algorithms, performing a Hooke and Jeeves-based local, are compared to another hybrid approaches, exploring an elitist criteria to apply local search. In this paper, multiplier-less nearly perfect reconstruction tree structured non-uniform filter banks (NUFB) are proposed. When sharp transition width filter banks are to be implemented, the order of the filters and hence the complexity will become very high. The filter banks employ an iterative algorithm which adjusts the cut off frequencies of the prototype filter, to reduce the amplitude distortion. It is found that the proposed design method, in which the prototype filter is designed by the frequency response masking method, gives better results when compared to the earlier reported results, in terms of the number of multipliers when sharp transition width filter banks are needed. To reduce the complexity and power consumption for hardware realization, a design method which makes the NUFB totally multiplier-less is also proposed in this paper. The NUFB is made multiplier-less by converting the continuous filter bank coefficients to finite precision coefficients in the signed power of two space. The filter bank with finite precision coefficients may lead to performance degradation. This calls for the use of suitable optimization techniques. The classical gradient based optimization techniques cannot be deployed here, because the search space consists of only integers. In this context, meta-heuristic algorithm is a good choice as it can be tailor made to suit the problem under consideration. Thus, this design method results in near perfect NUFBs which are simple and multiplier-less and have linear phase and sharp transition width with very low aliasing. Nowadays most industries do not integrate product, process and energy data. Costs due to energy consumption are often considered externalities and energy efficiency is not deemed a relevant performance criterion. In energy-intensive processes, as injection moulding, the specific energy consumption, embedded inside the same products, depends on the machine-product combinations. Multi-objective scheduling, including the energy data acquired from shop floor and allocation criteria, is a valuable approach to improve energy efficiency. This paper presents the extension of a commercial detailed scheduling support system developed within a regional Italian project aiming at providing tools to manufacturing industry for improving energy efficiency. The project designed a monitoring system developed by instrumenting injection moulding presses to acquire the energy consumption for each product-machine combination. The commercial scheduling system was extended by implementing a multi-objective metaheuristic scheduling approach. The experimental assessment of the proposed approach involved a major producer of plastic dispensers. The extended algorithm simultaneously optimizes the total weighted tardiness, the total setup and the energy consumption costs. In this paper, the water cycle algorithm (WCA), a recently developed metaheuristic method is proposed for solving multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs). The fundamental concept of the WCA is inspired by the observation of water cycle process, and movement of rivers and streams to the sea in the real world. Several benchmark functions have been used to evaluate the performance of the WCA optimizer for the MOPs. The obtained optimization results based on the considered test functions and comparisons with other well-known methods illustrate and clarify the robustness and efficiency of the WCA and its exploratory capability for solving the MOPs.
