Abstract: We review the investigation of a single quantum dot driven by a strong optical field. By coherent pump-probe spectroscopy, we demonstrate the Autler–Townes splitting and Mollow absorption spectrum in a single neutral quantum dot. Furthermore, we also show the typical Mollow absorption spectrum by driving a singly charged quantum dot in a strong optical coupling regime. Our results show all the typical features of an isolated atomic system driven by a strong optical field, such as the AC stark effect, Rabi side bands and optical gain effect, which indicate that both neutral and charged quantum dots maintain the discrete energy level states even at high optical field strengths. Abstract: The electric field enhancements in Au/Ag and Ag/Au core/shell nanoparticles have been investigated by means of quasi-static theory. The maximum enhancements of outside fields for Au/Ag and Ag/Au nanoshells occur along the incident polarization at plasmon resonance wavelength. It is surprised that the largest field enhancement in the shell of Ag/Au nanoshell occurs along the polarization direction, while that for Au/Ag nanoshell is perpendicular to the incident polarization. At off-resonance wavelength 1000 nm, the general shape of the field pattern is similar to that in resonance case except for much weaker amplitude. Furthermore, for the seamless nanoshells, the maximum enhancements of the electric field increase by increasing the shell thickness. As the shell thickness is small, the hot spots play an important role in the enhancement of the local electric field. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The amplitudes of the dipole and quadrupole modes for gold nanoshells have been investigated with various dielectric constants for the core and the embedding medium and with various size of the nanoshells by means of Mie theory. With the increase in the dielectric constant of the core, it is found that the strengths of dipole and quadrupole modes become weak. We also observe with the increasing dielectric constant of the embedding medium that the strength of the quadrupole mode is enhanced quickly, whereas that of dipole mode increases first and then decreases. We further find that the amplitude maximum of the dipole mode appears when the total radius of the nanoshell reaches to 50 nm even if the ratio of the inner and outer shell radii is fixed. We have ascribed the changes of the dipole and quadrupole modes to the competition among the variations of induced surface charges, conduction electrons and oscillation electrons. Yb:YAG single crystals were grown by the Czochralski method. Thermal properties like thermal diffusivity, conductivity and expansion of various Yb3+ concentration are studied from 50 to 500 °C. The effects of temperature and Yb3+ concentration on the thermal properties of Yb:YAG crystals are discussed. The deterioration of thermal properties of highly doped Yb:YAG is possibly due to the structural distortion caused by the Yb3+ ions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Cr4+:YbAG (Cr4+:Yb3Al5O12) crystal with a size up to Φ24 mm×30 mm was grown by the Czochralski method. In the absorption spectrum, there are two absorption bands at 939 and 969 nm, respectively, which are suitable for InGaAs diode laser pumping, and there is an absorption band at 1030 nm, which is suitable for passive Q-switched laser output at 1.03 μm. A broad emission spectrum from 970 to 1100 nm was exhibited from 940 nm wavelength pumping. This crystal is promising as a self-Q-switched laser crystal used for compact, efficient, highly stable, passive self-Q-switched thin chip solid-state lasers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Measurements of the electron spin relaxation rate in charged GaAs quantum dots are made using a new nonlinear optical phase-modulation spectroscopy technique. The measured results of as a function of magnetic field and temperature are best explained in terms of the spin relaxation by the phonon-assisted Dresselhaus spin–orbit scattering. approaches 34 μs at zero magnetic field at 4.5 K. Abstract: 20 at.% Yb:YAG single crystals have been grown by the CZ method and gamma-ray irradiation induced color centers and valence change of Fe3+ and Y b3+ ions in Yb:YAG have been studied. One significant 255 nm absorption band was observed in as-grown crystals and was attributed to Fe3+ ions. Two additional absorption (AA) bands located at 255 nm and 345 nm, respectively, were produced after gamma irradiation. The changes in the AA spectra after gamma irradiation and air annealing are mainly related to the charge exchange of the Fe3+, Fe2+, oxygen vacancies and F-type color centers. Analysis shows that the broad AA band is associated with Fe2+ ions and F-type color centers. The transition Y b3+→Y b2+ takes place as an effect of recharging of one of the Y b3+ ions from a pair in the process of gamma irradiation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
