Abstract: A new Br− anion-conducting solid electrolyte with a low solubility in water and a high thermal stability at elevated temperatures was developed by selecting lanthanum oxybromide (LaOBr) as a mother solid electrolyte phase. By the partial substitution of La3+ site in LaOBr with divalent Ca2+ or Sr2+, the bromide anion conductivity was greatly enhanced, and the highest Br− ion conductivity of 1.9×10−3 and 1.2×10−4 S·cm−1 was obtained at 873 K for La0.9Sr0.1OBr0.9 and La0.9Ca0.1OBr0.9, respectively. The Br− anion conduction in La0.9M0.1OBr0.9 (M=Ca, Sr) was directly demonstrated by DC electrolysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A new type of lithium ion conducting solid electrolyte, LiNO3 and KNO3 co-doped (Gd1−x La x )2O3, was developed by introducing the alkali metal nitrates into the open space in the (Gd1−x La x )2O3 solid lattice. Among the samples prepared, 0.6(Gd0.8La0.2)2O3–0.16LiNO3–0.24KNO3 showed the highest lithium ion conductivity, namely 6.14×10−2 and 2.83×10−4 S cm−1 at 400 and 100°C, respectively. These values are comparable to those of LISICON systems. Pure Li+ ion conduction was successfully demonstrated by the dc electrolysis method. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A new type of lithium ion conducting solid electrolyte, LiNO3-mixed (Gd0.9La0.1)2O3, was successfully developed by introducing LiNO3 into the interstitial open space in the (Gd0.9La0.1)2O3 crystal lattice and the highest lithium ion conductivity of 2.02×10−1 S·cm−1 at 773 K was realized for 0.325(Gd0.9La0.1)2O3–0.35LiNO3, which was comparable to that of the highest one among LISICON-type materials. The Li+ ion conduction in the 0.325(Gd0.9La0.1)2O3–0.35LiNO3 solid was directly identified by dc electrolysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: C-type cubic yttrium oxide single crystals were successfully grown electrochemically by applying the Y3+ ion conducting solid electrolyte of Y2(MoO4)3 at 900 °C. The growth of the single crystal is regulated by the electrolysis condition, and the average crystal size can be intentionally controlled from 0.39 to 0.94 μm by adjusting the electrolysis period. Although single crystal growth of such a refractory oxide as Y2O3 is considerably difficult by the conventional thermal heating–cooling procedures via melt because of high melting point of Y2O3 (ca. 2376 °C), the present electrochemical single crystal growth is simply applicable at moderate temperatures at around 900 °C. Abstract: A new solid electrolyte type sulfur dioxide gas sensor was fabricated by the combination of the trivalent aluminum cation conducting (Al0.2Zr0.8)20/19Nb(PO4)3 solid and the divalent oxide anion conducting yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) with the NaAl(SO4)2 solid as a detecting auxiliary electrode. Since the present sensor showed such a superior sensing performance of theoretical response, which obeys the Nernst relationship between the sensor EMF output and the logarithm of the SO2 gas concentration, along with the stable, continuous, and reproducible response, it is greatly expected to be applied to a practical SO2 gas sensing device.
