This article compares the portrayal of gender and working roles in Japanese and Thai television advertisements from 2003 to 2006. It reports that the proportion of working women in Thailand is higher than that of Japan, but the advertisements in Thailand reflect an ideal image of a housewife in an urban area. The conclusion that the roles of male and female in advertising correspond to the construction of gender roles in reality has been refuted.
