In crop rotations that include alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), agronomic and environmental concerns mean that it is important to determine the N fertilizer contribution of this legume for subsequent crops in order to help to increase the sustainability of cropping systems. To determine the N fertilizer replacement value (FRV) of a 2-yr alfalfa crop on subsequent crops of corn (Zea mays L.) followed by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under irrigated Mediterranean conditions, two 4-yr rotations (alfalfa-corn-wheat and corn-corn-corn-wheat) were conducted from 2001 to 2004 in a Typic Xerofluvent soil. Corn yields were compared after two years of alfalfa and a third year of corn under monoculture and wheat yields were also compared after both rotations. Corn production after alfalfa outyielded monoculture corn at all four rates of N fertilizer application analyzed (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg N/ha). The FRV of 2-yr alfalfa for corn was about 160 kg N/ha. Wheat grown after the alfalfa-corn rotation outyielded that grown after corn under monoculture at both the rates of N studied (0 and 100 kg N/ha). The FRV of alfalfa for wheat following alfalfa-corn was about 76 kg N/ha. Soil NO3–-N content after alfalfa was greater than with the corn monoculture at all rates of N fertilizer application and this higher value persisted during the second crop after alfalfa. This was probably one of the reasons for the better yields associated with the alfalfa rotation. These results make a valuable contribution to irrigated agriculture under mediterranean conditions, show reasons for interest in rotating alfalfa with corn, and explain how it is possible to make savings when applying N fertilizer., En las rotaciones que incluyen alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), ésta aporta a los cultivos siguientes una cantidad de N que conviene cuantificar como medida de sostenibilidad. Para determinar el N equivalente o valor de sustitución de N (FRV) de una alfalfa de dos años en el maíz (Zea mays L.) cultivado posteriormente y el trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) subsiguiente en los regadíos mediterráneos, se estudiaron dos rotaciones de 4 años (alfalfa-alfalfa-maíz-trigo y maíz-maíz-maíz-trigo) entre 2001 y 2004 en un suelo Typic Xerofluvent. Se comparó el rendimiento del maíz con dos precedentes distintos: a) 2 años de alfalfa y b) 2 años de maíz, y, posteriormente, el rendimiento del trigo en ambas rotaciones. Las producciones de maíz después de alfalfa superaron las del maíz en monocultivo en las cuatro dosis de fertilizante estudiadas (0, 100, 200 y 300 kg N/ha). El FRV de una alfalfa de 2 años para el maíz se evaluó en unos 160 kg N/ha. El trigo después de la rotación alfalfa-maíz dio mayores rendimientos que el producido después del monocultivo de maíz para las dos dosis ensayadas (0 y 100 kg N/ha). El FRV de la alfalfa para el trigo que siguió a la alfalfa-maíz se estimó en unos 76 kg N/ha. El contenido de N-NO3– del suelo, mayor después de la alfalfa que en el monocultivo de maíz, persistió en el segundo cultivo después de la alfalfa y podría explicar los mejores rendimientos asociados a la rotación con alfalfa. Estos resultados, válidos para los regadíos mediterráneos, muestran el interés de cultivar alfalfa en rotación con maíz y su contribución al ahorro en fertilizante nitrogenado.

Conservation tillage has been promoted as a solution to counteract constraints caused by intensive agriculture. In this work the effects of two conservation tillage systems, reduced tillage (RT) and no-tillage (NT) were compared to the traditional tillage (TT) in a long- (15 years, RT) and short-term experiment (3 years, NT). Both experiments were carried out under semi-arid, rainfed agriculture of Mediterranean SW Spain. Tillage caused a sharp increase in soil CO2 emissions immediately after tillage implementation, with a maximum value of 6.24 g CO2/square m/h under long-term TT treatment. Along the year, losses of carbon through CO2 emission were higher (905 and 801 g C/square m/year for the long- and shortterm TT treatments respectively), than those estimated for conservation systems (764 and 718 g C/square m/year for RT and NT respectively). Conservation tillage systems accumulated more soil organic carbon (SOC) in surface than the corresponding TT treatments (1.24 and 1.17 times greater for RT and NT, respectively, at 0-10 cm depth). Despite SOC accumulation would be moderate other variables related to soil quality, such as dehydrogenase activity, can be consistently increased in soil surface in conservation tillage, as the stratification ratio values indicated. Crop yields in conservation tillage were similar to or even greater than those obtained in TT. The agricultural (soil quality) and environmental (less CO2 emission to the atmosphere) benefits derived from conservation tillage make this system recommendable for semi-arid Mediterranean rainfed agriculture., El laboreo de conservación representa una solución para contrarrestar las limitaciones de la agricultura intensiva. En este trabajo se comparó el efecto de dos sistemas de laboreo de conservación, laboreo reducido (RT) y no-laboreo (NT), con laboreo tradicional (TT) en un experimento de larga duración (15 años, RT) y otro de corta duración (3 años, NT), bajo condiciones semi-áridas mediterráneas de secano (SE España). El laboreo aumentó las emisiones de CO2 en el momento de las labores, con un valor máximo de 6,24 g CO2/m cuadrado/h bajo el tratamiento TT del experimento de larga duración. A lo largo del año, las pérdidas de carbono CO2 fueron mayores (905 y 801 g C/m cuadrado/año para los tratamientos TT de larga y corta duración, respectivamente) que las estimadas bajo laboreo de conservación (764 y 718 g C/m cuadrado/año para RT y NT, respectivamente). Los sistemas de laboreo de conservación acumularon más carbono orgánico total (SOC) en superficie que sus correspondientes tratamientos TT (1,24 y 1,17 veces mayor para RT y NT, respectivamente, profundidad 0-10 cm). A pesar de la moderada acumulación de SOC, otras variables de calidad de suelo, como la actividad deshidrogenasa, pueden aumentar considerablemente en superficie bajo laboreo de conservación, así como valores de razón de estratificación. La producción del cultivo en laboreo de conservación fue similar o mayor que en TT. Los beneficios agrícolas del laboreo de conservación (calidad del suelo) y medioambientales (menores emisiones de CO2 a la atmósfera), hacen a este sistema recomendable para condiciones mediterráneas semi-áridas de secano.

Small analytical systems enabling rapid on-farm analysis may be useful for monitoring crop and soil nutrient status. Two commercially available, rapid analysis systems were evaluated for analysis of (NO3-) in aqueous standard solutions (AS), and in soil solution (SS), plant sap (PS) and fertigation nutrient solutions (NS) obtained from tomato crops. The systems were the Merck RQFlex reflectometer and the Hanna Instruments C115 Grow Master colorimeter. (NO3-) in AS covered the analytical range of each instrument, being 0.3-3.2 and 0.3-16.1 mmol/L, respectively, for the reflectometer and colorimeter. (NO3-) were 5-14 mmol/L for SS, 2.3-33 mmol/L for NS, and 63-158 mmol/L for PS. Accuracy was evaluated using linear regression against (1) known concentration for AS, and (2) laboratory analysis for SS, PS and NS. For the reflectometer with AS, SS and PS, the linear regression had slopes of 1 +/ - 0.08 and intercepts of /= 0.94. The reflectometer was generally accurate for all media examined; it was rapid (1 min per analysis) and simple to use. The colorimeter was generally similarly accurate; however, it was slower, required reagent preparation and was subject to colour interferences. This work demonstrated that the reflectometer can provide rapid and accurate on-farm measurement of (NO3-) in SS, PS and NS., Los sistemas rápidos que permiten análisis en campo pueden ser útiles para monitorizar el estado nutricional del cultivo y del suelo. Se evaluaron dos sistemas analíticos rápidos para analizar (NO3-) en soluciones acuosas (AS), solución del suelo (SS), muestras de savia (PS) y soluciones de fertirriego (NS). Se evaluó el reflectómetro RQFlex de Merck y el colorímetro C115 de Hanna. La (NO3-) en AS cubrió el rango analítico de cada instrumento y fue 0,3-3,2 y 0,3-16,1 mmol/L, respectivamente, para el reflectómetro y el colorímetro. La (NO3-) alcanzó 5-14 mmol/L para muestras de SS, 2,3-33 mmol/L para NS, y 63-158 mmol/L para PS. Para valorar la exactitud de los equipos se usaron regresiones lineales. Para el reflectómetro con muestras de AS, SS y PS, la regresión lineal tuvo pendientes de 1 +/- 0,08 e interceptos de /= 0,94. El reflectómetro fue generalmente preciso en los medios evaluados; fue rápido (1 min/análisis) y simple de usar. El colorímetro tuvo generalmente una exactitud similar; sin embargo, las medidas fueron más lentas, requiere preparación de reactivos y presentó interferencias con el color de las muestras. A factorial experiment with a randomised complete block design (three replicates) was performed to determine the effects of poultry manure (PM), lime (L) and NPK 15-15-15 fertilizer on soil chemical properties, and to determine the effects of their combinations on soil productivity and maize yield. The factors were PM (0, 5 and 10 Mg/ha), L as CaCO3 (0 and 250 kg/ha) and NPK 15-15-15 (0 and 100 kg/ha). The soil had a loamy sand texture. The application of L and PM increased the surface soil pH in a similar fashion. In both years of the experiment, the effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) of the soil after the combined application of 10 Mg/ha PM, L and NPK was significantly higher than after the individual application of L or NPK or their combination (5.75-7.65 cmol/kg compared to 3.36-4.57 cmol/kg). The application of 10 Mg/ha PM with L and/or NPK reduced the possibility of Mn toxicity, with soil levels ranging from 108 to 136 mg/kg. The combined use of the three amendments gave the highest leaf nutrient concentrations. The highest maize grain yield (4.62 Mg/ha) was obtained with L + 10 Mg/ha PM; with no amendment the grain yield was 1.9 Mg/ha. The application of PM enhanced the effects of L and NPK in improving soil productivity. However, separate applications of 5 and 10 Mg ha-1 PM similarly affected soil productivity; the sandy nature of the soil at depths of 0-20 cm seems to have prevented differences between the two rates from becoming manifested., Para determinar los efectos del abono de residuos de aves (PM), de cal (L) y de fertilizante NPK 15-15-15 sobre las propiedades químicas del suelo, y determinar los efectos de sus combinaciones sobre la productividad del suelo y producción del maíz, se llevó a cabo un experimento factorial con un diseño en bloques al azar (tres réplicas). Los factores fueron PM (0, 5 y 10 Mg/ha), L como CaCO3 (0 y 250 kg/ha) y NPK 15-15-15 (0 y 100 kg/ha). El suelo tenía una textura franco arenosa. La aplicación de L y PM aumentó el pH de la superficie del suelo de forma parecida. En los dos años del experimento, la capacidad de cambio de cationes efectiva (ECEC) del suelo tras la aplicación combinada de 10 Mg/ha PM, L y NPK fue significativamente superior que la de la aplicación individual de L ó NPK o una combinación de ambos (5,75-7,65 cmol/kg vs. 3,36-4,57 cmol/kg). La aplicación de 10 Mg/ha PM con L y/o NPK redujo la posibilidad de toxicidad con Mn, con niveles de suelo de 108-136 mg/kg. El uso combinado de las tres enmiendas produjo las concentraciones de nutrientes en hoja más altas. La producción de grano más alta en maíz (4,62 Mg/ha) se obtuvo con L + 10 Mg/ha PM; sin enmiendas se obtuvo 1,9 Mg/ha. La aplicación de PM aumentó los efectos de L y NPK en la mejora de la productividad del suelo. The conversion to organic farming of two soils, a loam (Xerofluvent) under irrigation and a clay (Chromic Haploxerept) under dryland management, was studied through analysis of their biochemical properties. Soil biological status was evaluated by measuring microbial biomass carbon and the ratio of enzymatic activity to microbial biomass. Results were compared to those after application of inorganic fertilizer. At the end of the study, in both soil types the organic treatments had increased the organic matter and nitrogen content compared with the inorganic treatment. Total organic carbon (TOC) values in the clay were higher than in the loam. This could be related to a lower mineralization rate of soil organic matter under dry land management and/or with a protection effect, by the clay on the organic fraction. However, absolute ratios of some enzymatic activities (dehydrogenase, protease and alkaline phosphatase) by microbial biomass carbon in the clay were lower than in the loam indicating a lower rate of enzyme production by microbial biomass in the clay. In the clay soil there was a great increase in TOC, total N, microbial biomass and enzymatic activity, in all treatments, in the last crop cycle. This was mainly related to a previous legume crop. Generally organic management improved biomass and enzymatic activity in both soils. In the future further studies are required to confirm the positive long-term effect of organic fertilization on biochemical properties which maintain or improve soil quality., En este trabajo se aborda el estudio de la reconversión a la agricultura ecológica en dos suelos de diferente textura y régimen hídrico, un suelo franco (Xerofluvent) en regadío y un suelo arcilloso (Chromic Haploxerept) en secano. Se compara el manejo ecológico del suelo con respecto a un manejo convencional, desde el punto de vista biológico. Se evaluó el estado biológico del suelo a través del carbono de la biomasa microbiana y el cociente entre las actividades enzimáticas por biomasa microbiana. Se observó un incremento en el contenido de materia orgánica y nitrógeno en los suelos fertilizados orgánicamente de ambos experimentos de reconversión. No obstante, los valores más altos de los contenidos de carbono orgánico total se encontraron en el suelo arcilloso. Estos resultados pueden estar relacionados con la menor tasa de mineralización debido a baja humedad de este suelo y/o al mayor contenido en arcilla que tiene un efecto protector en la fracción orgánica. Las razones de las actividades enzimáticas (deshidrogenasa, proteasa y fosfatasa alcalina) por biomasa microbiana en el suelo arcilloso fueron más bajas que en el suelo franco, reflejando una menor síntesis de enzimas por los microorganismos en el suelo arcilloso. En el último ciclo de cultivo del experimento de reconversión en secano se observó un importante incremento del contenido en carbono orgánico total, nitrógeno total, biomasa microbiana y actividades enzimáticas, lo cual se atribuye al cultivo anterior (una leguminosa). Por lo tanto, serían necesarios estudios a más largo plazo para confirmar una mejora de las propiedades bioquímicas bajo manejo orgánico.

Freezing and thawing affect soil aggregate stability. Understanding the effects of freezing and thawing processes on aggregate stability is necessary for the development of strategies for managing saline-sodic soils. This study was performed to determine the effects of freezing and thawing cycles (two, four, and six) on wet aggregate stability in six soils of different salinity and sodicity (54 dS/m, 11.7%; 49 dS/m, 11.8%; 53 dS/m, 31.7%; 85 dS/m, 39.7%; 59 dS/m, 13.9%; 68 dS/m, 36.8%, respectively) and three different aggregate sizes (< 1, 1-2, and 2-4 mm). The experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions using disturbed and non-cropped soil samples. In soils with a high percentage of exchangeable sodium and high electrical conductivity, the effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the wet aggregate stability was not significant. However, when the electrical conductivity was high and the percentage exchangeable sodium relatively low, wet aggregate stability was significantly reduced by the freeze-thaw cycles. A method of evaluating net nitrogen (N) mineralization in shallow petrocalcic soils, based on N balances in non-fertilized plots, is proposed. During 1999, 2000 and 2001, estimated N mineralized in an irrigated maize crop (6.5 months) in Central Spain was: 73.3, 56.2 and 60.5 kg ha-1, respectively. The relationship between EUF-Norg (organic nitrogen extracted from soil by electroultrafiltration) and mean mineralized N, in this experiment during the three seasons, was 1 mg EUF-Norg 100 g-1 soil equivalent to 30 kg N ha-1. The calibration was applied to EUF-Norg values from soil samples analysed before sowing. These values, together with the mineral N, were used to estimate available N and consequently the optimal N rate. To evaluate the effect of N fertilizer rate on NO3 – leaching and in N fertilizer-use efficiency (NFUE) three different rates of N were tested in 2000 and 2001: optimal N rate (NO), conventional N rate (NC) and a control no N (C). The NO rates for the maize crop were 150 and 130 kg N ha-1 in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Nitrogen losses of nitrate due to leaching were lower with NO than with the NC rate of 300 kg N ha-1. The NFUE values were higher for NO at 78.8% and 83.5% in 2000 and 2001, respectively than for NC at 48.7% and 49.3% in 2000 and 2001, respectively). However, in spite of the different levels of applied N, there was no difference in grain yield among treatments., Se propone una metodología para evaluar el nitrógeno (N) mineralizado en suelos petrocálcicos poco profundos, basada en los balances de N en parcelas no fertilizadas. Durante los años 1999, 2000 y 2001 el N mineralizado en un cultivo de maíz irrigado (6,5 meses) en la zona centro de España fue 73,3, 56,2 y 60,5 kg ha-1, respectivamente. La relación observada en este experimento, entre EUF-Norg (nitrógeno orgánico extraído por electroultrafiltración) y el N mineralizado durante los tres periodos de cultivo (valores medios), fue 1 mg EUF-Norg 100 g-1 suelo=30 kg N ha-1. Esta calibración se aplicó a los valores de EUF-Norg correspondientes a las muestras de suelo tomadas antes del cultivo. Para evaluar el efecto de las dosis de fertilizante sobre la lixiviación de nitrato y la eficiencia del uso de fertilizante nitrogenado (NFUE), se determinó el N asimilable y la dosis óptima de N, en base a esta calibración, junto con el N mineral del suelo. Los tratamientos aplicados fueron los siguientes: dosis óptima de N (NO), dosis convencional (NC) y control sin fertilizar (C). Las NO estimadas fueron 150 y 130 kg ha-1, en 2000 y 2001, respectivamente. El nitrato perdido por lixiviación fue menor en la NO que en la NC de 300 kg N ha-1. Los valores de NFUE fueron más altos para NO (78,8% y 83,5% en 2000 y 2001, respectivamente) que para NC (48,7% y 49,3% en 2000 y 2001, respectivamente). Sin embargo, a pesar de las diferencias en las dosis de N aplicadas en ambos tratamientos, no se observó ningún efecto sobre la producción de grano.

Soil degradation is the result of interactions involving the soil itself, human activity, climate, relief, and vegetation. These can lead to changes in —or even the loss of— certain characteristics of the soil, reducing its present and future productive capacity. The aim of this study was to determine the behaviour of a number of soil physical variables and total organic carbon content, as well as the root activity and yield of crops grown in rotation (soybean in 1998/1999 and maize in 1999/2000) under direct sowing (DS) and conventional tillage (CT) conditions. Root activity was assessed using an isotopic methodology involving the uptake of 32P. The root activity of the soybean crop, which grew under normal rainfall conditions, was greater under CT conditions. That of the maize crop, which grew when rainfall was well below normal, was greater under DS conditions. Bulk density was higher and total porosity lower in the upper 0.10 m of the soil in the DS plots. Conventional tillage led to lower penetration resistance values in the upper layers of the soil profile. No differences in soil total organic carbon were found between the two tillage systems. The soil water content of the upper soil layers was higher under DS. The yield of the soybean crop under CT was 57% higher than under DS. The yield of maize was affected by water deficiency; higher yields were obtained with DS than with CT., La degradación del suelo es el resultado de las interacciones entre la actividad humana y el recurso suelo, clima, relieve y vegetación, produciendo pérdida de las características del suelo, conduciendo a una disminución de su capacidad productiva actual o futura. El objetivo del trabajo fue determinar el comportamiento de algunos parámetros físicos del suelo, carbono orgánico, rendimiento y la actividad de las raíces en una rotación bajo siembra directa (SD) y laboreo convencional (LC). La rotación empleada fue soja (1998/99), maíz (1999/00). Se evaluó la actividad radical mediante la utilización de 32P. En periodos de precipitaciones normales, la actividad radical total fue mayor en LC; cuando existió déficit hídrico, como el ocurrido durante el desarrollo del maíz, la SD mostró una mayor actividad radical total. La densidad aparente fue más alta y la porosidad total más baja en los primeros 0,10 m en las parcelas tratadas con SD respecto de LC. Los tratamientos de LC presentaron una menor resistencia a la penetración en la parte superficial del perfil. El carbono orgánico no mostró diferencias entre los sistemas de laboreo. La humedad del suelo en los horizontes superficiales fue mayor bajo SD. Los rendimientos de soja con LC fueron un 57% superiores a los tratamientos de SD. El rendimiento de maíz fue afectado por falta de agua durante el desarrollo del cultivo, siendo el rendimiento de SD superior al de LC.

Many soils in the Mediterranean region are subjected to progressive degradation as a result of water erosion. A study was carried out to examine the effects of biosolids on a degraded soil. Single doses of 40, 80 and 120 Mg haE–1 of a biosolid were applied to the surface of soil and their effects on its chemical characteristics and on the native vegetation were assessed. Soil macronutrients, micronutrients and heavy metals were tested one and five years after application. Canopy cover, biomass production and mineral composition of native vegetation were also determined. Biosolids increased the content of most nutrients in the soil, although this effect decreased over time. The soil organic matter content did not increase significantly at the beginning of the experiment, although significant differences were observed after five years. The contents of total and extractable heavy metals did not change with time after the application. The native plant biomass production and the canopy cover significantly increased with all the doses applied at the beginning of the experiment, and remained high five years after biosolids application., Se ha realizado una experiencia de restauración de un suelo degradado en un ecosistema semiárido. Diferentes dosis de biosólidos (40, 80 y 120 Mg haE–1) fueron aplicados una única vez en superficie y se estudiaron sus efectos sobre las principales propiedades químicas del suelo y la cobertura vegetal, producción de biomasa y composición mineral de la vegetación nativa al año y a los cinco años de la aplicación. Las dosis de biosólido incrementaron los contenidos de nutrientes en el suelo, aunque su efecto disminuyó con el tiempo. El contenido de materia orgánica del suelo no experimentó cambio al comienzo de la experiencia, mientras que hubo diferencias significativas entre tratamientos en el último año. El contenido de metales pesados del suelo no varió a lo largo del estudio. La producción de biomasa y cobertura vegetal se incrementaron significativamente con todas las dosis ensayadas y permanecieron así a lo largo de los cinco años del estudio.

The effect of long term conservation tillage (CT) application on soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration, and on stratification ratios (SR) of SOC, soluble organic carbon (SOCs), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and protease activity (PA) has been studied. The SR was established dividing values of these variables at 0-5 cm depth by values at 10-25 cm depth. The results were compared with those obtained under traditional tillage (TT). The study was conducted in a wheat-sunflower crop rotation established in 1991 under rainfed conditions in south-west Spain. The results showed here correspond to the years 2001 (sunflower) and 2002 and 2004 (wheat). Despite a slight increase in SOC and the SR of SOC under CT compared to TT, noticeable and significant increases of SR of SOCs, MBC and PA were recorded in CT compared to TT. These increases reveal that the stratification of SOC under CT have consequences on soil functions beyond that of potentially sequestering more C in the soil. CT also improved soil quality by softening the loss of CaCO3, compared to TT., Se han estudiado a largo plazo los efectos del laboreo de conservación (LC) sobre la concentración de carbono orgánico (CO) y las razones de estratificación (RE) del CO, CO soluble, C de la biomasa microbiana y actividad enzimática proteasa. Las RE se establecieron dividiendo los valores de estas variables en la profundidad de 0-5 cm por los valores obtenidos en la profundidad de 10-25 cm y los resultados se compararon con los obtenidos bajo laboreo tradicional (LT). El estudio se realizó sobre una rotación trigo-girasol establecida en 1991 bajo condiciones de secano, en el sur de España; los resultados presentados corresponden a los años 2001 (girasol) y 2002 y 2004 (trigo). El aumento de CO y estratificación del CO en LC sólo fue moderado respecto al registrado en LT. Sin embargo, los aumentos de los valores de estratificación de CO soluble, C de la biomasa microbiana y actividad proteasa fueron notables y significativamente más altos en LC que en LT. La estratificación del CO en LC no sólo refleja una acumulación de CO, sino que afecta a las funciones (dinámica) del suelo. El LC también mejoró la calidad del suelo mitigando, respecto a LT, las pérdidas de CaCO3.

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of dairy industry sewage sludge as a fertilizer for an acid soil, and to evaluate the leaching of its nutrients and pollutants. The sludge was applied to pots containing an acid pasture soil (pH 4.4, organic matter 9.6%) in which Lolium multiflorum was then sown. Two different doses of sewage sludge (80 and 160 cubic m ha-1) and a dose of 15:15:15 NPK (675 kg ha-1) were compared. Changes in soil properties (leachate and soil fraction) and the production and nutritional status of the crop were monitored for nine weeks. The addition of the sludge led to substantial increases in crop production, which was attributed to improvements in crop nutrient concentrations (mainly N and P) and soil properties (pH, total N and available P). The sludge-treated soils lost less NO3–, Ca, Mg and K through leaching than those treated with the mineral fertilizer. The amounts of nutrient accumulated in the crop showed, however, that the input of K and to a lesser extent of Mg, were insufficient to cover requirements. Supplements of these elements are therefore necessary., En el presente trabajo se evaluó la eficacia fertilizante, así como la transferencia de nutrientes y contaminantes al medio hídrico de un lodo de depuradora de industria láctea. Se llevó a cabo a partir de un balance entre las cantidades de nutrientes asimiladas por el cultivo y las pérdidas por lavado. El experimento consistió en un ensayo en macetas que contenían un suelo ácido de pradera (pH 4,4 y materia orgánica 9,6%), que recibieron tres tipos de tratamiento: dos dosis de lodo de depuradora de una industria láctea (80 m cúbicos ha-1 y 160 m cúbicos ha-1), una de fertilizante tipo NPK 15:15:15 (675 kg ha-1) así como un control. Una vez realizados los tratamientos se sembraron con Lolium multiflorum L. Durante nueve semanas se analizó la evolución de las propiedades de los suelos (percolados y fracción sólida), así como de la producción y el estado nutricional del cultivo. El aporte del lodo derivó en incrementos substanciales de la producción, lo que se relaciona con el incremento de las concentraciones de nutrientes en el cultivo (N y P, fundamentalmente) y con la mejora en algunas propiedades de los suelos (incremento de pH, N total, P disponible). En comparación a la fertilización mineral, la fertilización con lodo dio lugar a menores pérdidas de NO3-, así como de Ca, Mg y K a través de los lixiviados. El análisis de las cantidades asimiladas por el cultivo indica que el aporte de K y Mg a través de la aplicación de lodo no fue suficiente para abastecer las necesidades de cultivo; en consecuencia estos elementos deberían ser suplementados adicionalmente.

This study reports the effect of topography, stubble grazing, tillage and the addition of fertilizer on the organic carbon content and structural stability of a typic Hapludoll topsoil under mixed agricultural production. The organic carbon content was significantly higher in the lower area of the slope when harvest residues were not grazed and when conservation tillage was performed. The interaction tillage x residue showed the highest carbon content to be attained with reduced tillage and no stubble grazing, and the lowest to be attained with conventional tillage with stubble grazing. Comparisons with minimally altered soil showed the loss of organic carbon to oscillate between 80% with conventional tillage when residues were grazed and 77% when conservation tillage systems were used. With respect to quantities of water-stable aggregates available (four diameter ranges), minimal alteration led to the highest percentages of the most coarse aggregates, while with the different treatments the finest and most coarse aggregates showed the highest percentages. The exception was under direct seeding where the distribution was similar to that for minimal soil alteration, though the percentage of the most coarse aggregates was lower. A linear, positive relationship was found between organic carbon and macroaggregate content. These results may help in the choice of technologies that can improve soil quality., Se estudió el efecto de la topografía, pastoreo de rastrojos, labranzas y fertilización sobre el contenido de carbono orgánico y la estabilidad estructural del horizonte superficial de un Hapludoll típico bajo producción mixta, y se comparó con el mismo suelo con mínima alteración. El contenido de carbono orgánico fue significativamente más elevado en la posición más baja de la pendiente, cuando no se pastorearon los residuos de cosecha y se usaron labranzas conservacionistas. La interacción labranza x residuo indicó que el mayor contenido de carbono se observa en labranza reducida no pastoreada y el menor en labranza convencional con pastoreo de rastrojos. La comparación con la situación de mínima alteración indicó que la pérdida de carbono orgánico oscila entre el 80% en labranza convencional cuando se pastorean los rastrojos y el 77% en labranzas conservacionistas. En cuanto a la cantidad de agregados estables al agua de cuatro rangos de diámetros, se observó que en la situación de mínima alteración los porcentajes más elevados se encontraron en los agregados más gruesos, mientras que en los tratamientos estudiados la distribución fue bimodal, con porcentajes más elevados en los agregados más finos y más gruesos, excepto en siembra directa, que tuvo una distribución semejante a mínima alteración, aunque con valores inferiores de agregados más gruesos. Se encontró relación lineal y positiva entre el carbono orgánico y los macroagregados. Los resultados obtenidos pueden contribuir a la elección de tecnologías para iniciar un proceso que llevaría al suelo a un nuevo estado de equilibrio tendiente a una mayor calidad.

The effect of long term conservation tillage (CT) application on the stratification ratio (SR) of soil organic carbon (SOC), soil nutrient (P and K) contents, loss of the soil CaCO3 and on the crops performance was studied. The SR was established dividing the SOC content at 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm soil depths by the SOC at deeper depths (10-25 cm and 25-35 cm). Results were compared with those obtained under traditional tillage (TT). The study was conducted in a wheat-sunflower crop rotation established in 1991 under rainfed conditions in south-west Spain; results shown here correspond to the years 2001 (sunflower) and 2002 (wheat). The results show that, under studied conditions, CT improved soil quality by reaching a greater SR (> 2) than that in TT (< 2) (SR > 2 indicates better soil quality), decreasing the loss of CaCO3 and increasing the P and K contents at the soil surface (0-5 cm and 5-10 cm). Los resultados se han comparado con los obtenidos bajo laboreo tradicional (LT). El estudio se realizó sobre una rotación de trigo-girasol establecida en 1991 bajo condiciones de secano, en el sur de España. Los resultados presentados corresponden a los años 2001 (girasol) y 2002 (trigo). Bajo las condiciones indicadas, LC aumentó la calidad del suelo mediante la consecución de una RE (> 2) superior a la obtenida con LT (< 2) (valores de RE > 2 son indicadores de una mayor calidad de suelo), mitigando las pérdidas de CaCO3 y aumentando los contenidos de P y K en superficie (0-5 cm). En general, el desarrollo de los cultivos fue mejor con LC que con LT.

The purpose of this work was to analyze the dynamics of soil biomass and its activity in a soil fertilized with N andcultivated under conventional or zero tillage systems. In crop rotations that include alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), agronomic and environmental concerns mean that it is important to determine the N fertilizer contribution of this legume for subsequent crops in order to help to increase the sustainability of cropping systems. To determine the N fertilizer replacement value (FRV) of a 2-yr alfalfa crop on subsequent crops of corn (Zea mays L.) followed by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under irrigated Mediterranean conditions, two 4-yr rotations (alfalfa-corn-wheat and corn-corn-corn-wheat) were conducted from 2001 to 2004 in a Typic Xerofluvent soil. Corn yields were compared after two years of alfalfa and a third year of corn under monoculture and wheat yields were also compared after both rotations. Corn production after alfalfa outyielded monoculture corn at all four rates of N fertilizer application analyzed (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg N/ha). The FRV of 2-yr alfalfa for corn was about 160 kg N/ha. Wheat grown after the alfalfa-corn rotation outyielded that grown after corn under monoculture at both the rates of N studied (0 and 100 kg N/ha). The FRV of alfalfa for wheat following alfalfa-corn was about 76 kg N/ha. Soil NO3 -N content after alfalfa was greater than with the corn monoculture at all rates of N fertilizer application and this higher value persisted during the second crop after alfalfa. This was probably one of the reasons for the better yields associated with the alfalfa rotation. These results make a valuable contribution to irrigated agriculture under mediterranean conditions, show reasons for interest in rotating alfalfa with corn, and explain how it is possible to make savings when applying N fertilizer. En las rotaciones que incluyen alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), ésta aporta a los cultivos siguientes una cantidad de N que conviene cuantificar como medida de sostenibilidad. Para determinar el N equivalente o valor de sustitución de N (FRV) de una alfalfa de dos años en el maíz (Zea mays L.) cultivado posteriormente y el trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) subsiguiente en los regadíos mediterráneos, se estudiaron dos rotaciones de 4 años (alfalfa-alfalfa-maíz-trigo y maíz-maíz-maíz-trigo) entre 2001 y 2004 en un suelo Typic Xerofluvent. Se comparó el rendimiento del maíz con dos precedentes distintos: a) 2 años de alfalfa y b) 2 años de maíz, y, posteriormente, el rendimiento del trigo en ambas rotaciones. Las producciones de maíz después de alfalfa superaron las del maíz en monocultivo en las cuatro dosis de fertilizante estudiadas (0, 100, 200 y 300 kg N ha–1). El FRV de una alfalfa de 2 años para el maíz se evaluó en unos 160 kg N ha–1. El trigo después de la rotación alfalfa-maíz dio mayores rendimientos que el producido después del monocultivo de maíz para las dos dosis ensayadas (0 y 100 kg N ha–1). El FRV de la alfalfa para el trigo que siguió la alfalfa-maíz se estimó en unos 76 kg N ha–1. El contenido de N-NO3 del suelo, mayor después de la alfalfa que en el monocultivo de maíz, persistió en el segundo cultivo después de la alfalfa y podría explicar los mejores rendimientos asociados a la rotación con alfalfa. Estos resultados, válidos para los regadíos mediterráneos, muestran el interés de cultivar alfalfa en rotación con maíz y su contribución al ahorro en fertilizante nitrogenado.

Soil degradation is the result of interactions involving the soil itself, human activity, climate, relief, and vegetation. These can lead to changes in —or even the loss of— certain characteristics of the soil, reducing its present and future productive capacity. The aim of this study was to determine the behaviour of a number of soil physical variables and total organic carbon content, as well as the root activity and yield of crops grown in rotation (soybean in 1998/1999 and maize in 1999/2000) under direct sowing (DS) and conventional tillage (CT) conditions. Root activity was assessed using an isotopic methodology involving the uptake of 32P. The root activity of the soybean crop, which grew under normal rainfall conditions, was greater under CT conditions. That of the maize crop, which grew when rainfall was well below normal, was greater under DS conditions. Bulk density was higher and total porosity lower in the upper 0.10 m of the soil in the DS plots. Conventional tillage led to lower penetration resistance values in the upper layers of the soil profile. No differences in soil total organic carbon were found between the two tillage systems. The soil water content of the upper soil layers was higher under DS. The yield of the soybean crop under CT was 57% higher than under DS. The yield of maize was affected by water deficiency; higher yields were obtained with DS than with CT. La degradación del suelo es el resultado de las interacciones entre la actividad humana y el recurso suelo, clima, relieve y vegetación, produciendo pérdida de las características del suelo, conduciendo a una disminución de su capacidad productiva actual o futura. El objetivo del trabajo fue determinar el comportamiento de algunos parámetros físicos del suelo, carbono orgánico, rendimiento y la actividad de las raíces en una rotación bajo siembra directa (SD) y laboreo convencional (LC). La rotación empleada fue soja (1998/99), maíz (1999/00). Se evaluó la actividad radical mediante la utilización de 32P. En periodos de precipitaciones normales, la actividad radical total fue mayor en LC; cuando existió déficit hídrico, como el ocurrido durante el desarrollo del maíz, la SD mostró una mayor actividad radical total. La densidad aparente fue más alta y la porosidad total más baja en los primeros 0,10 m en las parcelas tratadas con SD respecto de LC. Los tratamientos de LC presentaron una menor resistencia a la penetración en la parte superficial del perfil. El carbono orgánico no mostró diferencias entre los sistemas de laboreo. La humedad del suelo en los horizontes superficiales fue mayor bajo SD. Los rendimientos de soja con LC fueron un 57% superiores a los tratamientos de SD. El rendimiento de maíz fue afectado por falta de agua durante el desarrollo del cultivo, siendo el rendimiento de SD superior al de LC.

A method of evaluating net nitrogen (N) mineralization in shallow petrocalcic soils, based on N balances in non-fertilized plots, is proposed. During 1999, 2000 and 2001, estimated N mineralized in an irrigated maize crop (6.5 months) in Central Spain was: 73.3, 56.2 and 60.5 kg ha-1, respectively. The relationship between EUF-Norg (organic nitrogen extracted from soil by electroultrafiltration) and mean mineralized N, in this experiment during the three seasons, was 1 mg EUF-Norg 100 g-1 soil equivalent to 30 kg N ha-1. The calibration was applied to EUF-Norg values from soil samples analysed before sowing. These values, together with the mineral N, were used to estimate available N and consequently the optimal N rate. To evaluate the effect of N fertilizer rate on NO3 – leaching and in N fertilizer-use efficiency (NFUE) three different rates of N were tested in 2000 and 2001: optimal N rate (NO), conventional N rate (NC) and a control no N (C). The NO rates for the maize crop were 150 and 130 kg N ha-1 in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Nitrogen losses of nitrate due to leaching were lower with NO than with the NC rate of 300 kg N ha-1. The NFUE values were higher for NO at 78.8% and 83.5% in 2000 and 2001, respectively than for NC at 48.7% and 49.3% in 2000 and 2001, respectively). However, in spite of the different levels of applied N, there was no difference in grain yield among treatments. Se propone una metodología para evaluar el nitrógeno (N) mineralizado en suelos petrocálcicos poco profundos, basada en los balances de N en parcelas no fertilizadas. Durante los años 1999, 2000 y 2001 el N mineralizado en un cultivo de maíz irrigado (6,5 meses) en la zona centro de España fue 73,3, 56,2 y 60,5 kg ha-1, respectivamente. La relación observada en este experimento, entre EUF-Norg (nitrógeno orgánico extraído por electroultrafiltración) y el N mineralizado durante los tres periodos de cultivo (valores medios), fue 1 mg EUF-Norg 100 g-1 suelo=30 kg N ha-1. Esta calibración se aplicó a los valores de EUF-Norg correspondientes a las muestras de suelo tomadas antes del cultivo. Para evaluar el efecto de las dosis de fertilizante sobre la lixiviación de nitrato y la eficiencia del uso de fertilizante nitrogenado (NFUE), se determinó el N asimilable y la dosis óptima de N, en base a esta calibración, junto con el N mineral del suelo. Los tratamientos aplicados fueron los siguientes: dosis óptima de N (NO), dosis convencional (NC) y control sin fertilizar (C). Las NO estimadas fueron 150 y 130 kg ha-1, en 2000 y 2001, respectivamente. El nitrato perdido por lixiviación fue menor en la NO que en la NC de 300 kg N ha-1. Los valores de NFUE fueron más altos para NO (78,8% y 83,5% en 2000 y 2001, respectivamente) que para NC (48,7% y 49,3% en 2000 y 2001, respectivamente). Sin embargo, a pesar de las diferencias en las dosis de N aplicadas en ambos tratamientos, no se observó ningún efecto sobre la producción de grano.
