Le nautisme français déchiré entre normes britanniques et références états-uniennes incite à s'interroger pour savoir si d'autres nations régatières connaissent des processus identiques. L'étude du yachting au Canada semble de ce point de vue intéressante. Nous essaierons de comprendre comment les pratiques nautiques se sont construites au Canada. Quels rapports les navigateurs Canadiens-français entretiennent-ils avec leurs homologues anglophones ? Quelles sont leurs modèles pour édicter des règles de course ou construire des voiliers : les normes britanniques, françaises ou celles des États-Unis proches ? Un système propre au Canada s'est-il développé ? Nous chercherons surtout à montrer les enjeux sous-jacents à l'activité vélique. L'hypothèse que l'on peut formuler est celle d'une pratique qui a su combiner les questions politiques, territoriales, ethniques du Canada et forger son identité sur des bases plurielles combinant les codes défendus par les francophones, les normes portées par les anglophones et des innovations venues des États-Unis. Dans les activités de nature, la « première » est une forme de performance particulière. L'analogie entre les premières et les records sportifs doit être questionnée. L'objet de cet article est de démontrer les spécificités des premières par rapport aux records sportifs et d'en tirer une meilleure compréhension de l'identité des activités de nature. Nous nous appuyons sur une analyse socio-historique des premières et de leur valorisation dans différents médias, propres à une communauté de pratiquants ou grand public. Nos principaux résultats révèlent que, les premières et les records se rejoignent sur certaines caractéristiques liées notamment à la performance physique. Néanmoins, derrière ces analogies, les premières se distinguent par de nombreux aspects comme leur unicité qui leur confère une historicité particulière. De cette analyse ressort l'identité des activités de nature et explique la mobilité inhérente à ces pratiques dans la mesure où la découverte est un moteur essentiel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

At the turn of the 20th century the development of modern sport linked to the industrial age and its quest for speed left little room for the classical Graeco- Roman wrestling, which being too static did not catch the imagination of the Parisan public. A new style emerged, the "catch-as-catch-can ", (attrape comme tu peux), rooted in American culture and similar to traditional English and Scottish styles of wrestling. Audiences at the time were captivated by the variety of holds and the acrobatic element of these moves. However, considered to be too dangerous, the practice gave rise to « free style » or « lutte libre » the Olympic discipline which prohibited any form of actual violence. Amateur wrestling no longer captured the public attention and « catch » took over as the combat sport of spectacle. In an effort to make wrestling a sport, the exuberant free for all and showmanship became more professional in France between the wars. Banned in this format under the Vichy regime and ill-suited as an educational pursuit, catch gained ground after World War II as a stage managed entertainment. Freestyle wrestling caught the imagination not only through the physical attributes of the athlete but evoked the symbolism of a traditional mythology of the strong man and champion of right. However, the 1960s were also notable for the growth of other sporting practices which thanks to the popularity of television broadcasts rivaled this aspect of wrestling. Furthermore, sport now offered a new mythology through a new style of spectacle simultaneously uniting and dividing the spectators in equal measure. From then on catch was condemned: the 1970s viewer could be surprised, but he no longer believed it was a real fight. Catch would therefore have to change in order to survive. The article presents sports history research on the first permanent non-wooden baseball parks and football stadiums constructed in the U.S. during the first half of the 20th century, focusing on facilities used by teams in major league baseball and professional football. The first such structure was Harvard Stadium, the football stadium of Harvard University which opened in 1903. The concept that the construction of such facilities was seen as part of overall progress in economic and social development by the cities and towns in which they were located is considered, as his how sports facility location affected those cities' growth. The facilities, while often of considerable architectural merit, underwent consistent and expensive renovation and expansion due to technological changes such as lighting and the need for broadcasting facilities. Extra seating to generate more revenue and to accommodate more spectators due to the increased popularity of the two sports was also added on a consistent basis.

Certainly for me (Jackie MacDonald), it was far and away the biggest event of any sort that I had been involved in until then. The trip from Toronto was the farthest I had ever travelled: Vancouver was beautiful with the mountains in the background; the local population was bursting with pride and enthusiasm for the Games; I was awed by the sight of so many famous athletes and excited by the opportunity to meet participants from all over the world. There were highs and lows of course: on the final day the "Miracle Mile" lived up to all the tremendous hype, but the horrifying spectacle of marathoner Jim Peters staggering, collapsing, then crawling on the track, and unable to finish was a tragic sight. For me personally, winning the silver medal in the women's shot put with a personal best was the high point, while being scratched from the discus competition was the low point. I was reminded of how thrilling it was for me to be on the Canadian team in 1954 when my husband, our two sons and I went to Victoria for the 1994 Commonwealth Games. This article traces the history of jeu de paume, which is a racket game sometimes called court tennis. Jeu de paume was popular in France from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries. Particular attention is paid to how this game developed as a game largely popular among the nobility. The author concludes that this sport, while it had been practiced extensively by the nobility during the early 1500s, did not become institutionalized in the curriculum of the royal academies established by notable figures such as the Cardinal de Richelieu. Also discussed is the relationship between jeu de paume and fencing. Documents that are utilized in this study include books, poems, and engravings.
