Evapotranspiration is an important process in the water cycle that represents a considerable amount of moisture lost to the atmosphere through evaporation from the soil and wet surfaces, and transpiration from plants. Therefore, several water management methods, such as irrigation scheduling and hydrological impact analysis, rely on an accurate estimation of evapotranspiration rates. Often, daily reference evapotranspiration is modelled based on the Penman, Priestley-Taylor or Hargraeves equation. However, each of these models requires extensive input data, such as daily mean temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and solar radiation. Yet, in design studies, such data may be unavailable and therefore, another approach may be needed that is based on stochastically generated time series. More specifically, when rainfall-runoff models are used, these evapotranspiration data need to be consistent with the accompanying (stochastically generated) precipitation time series data. In this paper, such an approach is presented in which the statistical dependence between evapotranspiration, precipitation and temperature is described by three- and four-dimensional vine copulas. Based on a case study of 72 years of evapotranspiration, temperature and precipitation data, observed in Uccle, Belgium, it is shown that canonical vine copulas (C-vines) perform very well in preserving the dependences between variables. Due to the widespread uncertainties in agricultural water resources systems and climate change projections, the traditional optimization methods for agricultural water management may have difficulties in generating rational and effective optimal decisions. In order to get optimal future agricultural water allocation schemes for arid areas with consideration of climate change conditions, the model framework established in this paper integrates a statistical downscaling model, back propagation neural networks, and an evapotranspiration model (the Hargreaves model) with inexact irrigation water allocation optimization model under future climate change scenarios. The model framework, which integrates simulation models and optimization models, considers the interactions and uncertainties of parameters, thereby reflecting the realities more accurately. It is applied to the Yingke Irrigation Area in the midstream area of the Heihe River Basin in Zhangye city, Gansu Province, northwest China. Then, water allocation schemes in planning year (2047) under multiple future Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios and the status quo (2016) are compared, in order to evaluate the practicability of generated water allocation schemes. The results show that the water shortages of economic crops are improved compared with the status quo under all RCP scenarios while those of the grain crops present opposite results. Meanwhile, the economic benefits decrease from the status quo to planning year under all future scenarios. This phenomenon is directly related to the amount of irrigation water allocation and is indirectly related to the changes of meteorological conditions. The model framework can reveal the regular pattern of hydro-meteorological elements with the impact of climate change. Meanwhile, it can generate irrigation water allocation schemes under various RCPs scenarios which could provide valuable decision support for water resources managers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drought is a natural hazard which can cause harmful effects on water resources. To monitor drought, the use of an indicator and determination of wet and dry period trend seem to have an important role in quantifying the drought analysis. In this paper, in addition to the comparison of Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), based on the most appropriate probability distribution function, it was tried to examine the trends of dry and wet periods based on the mentioned indices. Accordingly, the meteorological data of 30 synoptic stations in Iran (1960-2014) was used and the trend was analyzed using the Mann-Kendall test by eliminating the effect of any significant autocorrelation coefficients at 95% confidence level (modified Mann-Kendall). Comparing results between the time series of RDI and SPI drought indices based on statistical indicators (RMSE < 0.434, R2 > 0.819 and T-statistic < 0.419) in all studied stations revealed that the behavior of the two indices was roughly the same and the difference between them was not significant. The trend analysis results of RDI and SPI indices based on modified Mann-Kendall test showed that the variation of dry and wet periods was decreasing in most of the studied stations (five cases were significant). In addition, the results of the trend line slope of dry and wet periods related to the drought indices in the studied area indicated that the slope was negative for SPI and RDI indices in 70% and 50% of stations, respectively. Anthropogenic activities have altered the climate and led to changes in the water cycle. Understanding the climate change and hydrological responses is critical to derive adaptive strategies for sustainable water resources management. In this study, we diagnosed the trends of primary climate elements and hydrological components during the past half century (1960-2009) for the humid Xiangjiang River Basin in central-south China at multiple temporal and spatial scales. The air temperature trend demonstrated an overall warming climate but with a quicker pace in recent years; however, the wind speed reduced significantly in the early period, and this downtrend had largely disappeared after the mid-1990s. Under such a shifting climate, the hydrological responses were not monotonic during the past 50 years: the evapotranspiration behaved in a decreasing trend in the early 35 years (1960-1994), followed by an uptrend in the later period (1995-2009). The stepwise analysis of soil water content and baseflow demonstrated a wetting trend followed by a drying one but with a steeper slope, indicating an accelerated drying trend which may cause a concern in stream water availability especially in the dry season. Spatial trend analysis showed that some areas experienced a downtrend (drying) in the dry season, but most areas had an uptrend (wetting) in the wet season for the whole study period. Overall, the analyses of temporal and spatial changes are useful for decision makers to deal with the continuing changes in climate and hydrology. Based on daily meteorological data at 43 gauging stations in the Pearl River basin and 65 gauging stations in the Yellow River basin, we analyze changing properties of actual evapotranspiration (ET), reference evapotranspiration (ET) and precipitation in these two river basins. In our study, Pearl River basin is taken as the 'energy-limited' system and the Yellow River basin as the 'water-limited' system. The results indicate decreasing ET in the Pearl River and Yellow River basin. However, different changing properties are detected for ET when compared to ET. The middle and upper Yellow River basin are characterized by increasing ET values, whereas the Pearl River basin is dominated by decreasing ET values. This result demonstrates enhancing drying force in the Yellow River basin. ET depends mainly on the changes of precipitation amount in the Yellow River basin. In the Pearl River basin, however, ET changes are similar to those of ET, i.e. both are in decreasing trend and which may imply weakening hydrological cycle in the Pearl River basin. Different influencing factors are identified behind the ET and ET in the Pearl River and Yellow River basin: In the Pearl River basin, intensifying urbanization and increasing aerosol may contribute much to the evapotranspiration changes. Variations of precipitation amount may largely impact the spatial and temporal patterns of ET in the Yellow River basin.
