Abstract

The article discusses the importance to companies of developing a risk challenge culture. The authors cite the March 2011 earthquake that damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan and the recall by car maker General Motors Co. of vehicles equipped with faulty ignition switches as examples of a failure to anticipate and mitigate risks. They describe several key elements of the necessary culture including board oversight of risk and board expertise in enterprise risk management.
