The authors present some of the most important writings of the well-known professor emeritus of Bonn University, Hans Rothe (1928-2021), offering an overview of the main ideas he developed and the methods he applied in his research. Due attention is given to his indefatigable activity as an editor of important, mostly unduly forgotten medieval and early modern texts. His commentary to the first translations of the Bible for many Slavic peoples remains a milestone of Slavic studies. He was a pioneer in fostering research about Slavo-Byzantine liturgical and religious texts, devotional songs, and baroque literature in Russia and Ukraine. No less remarkable are his articles about the Enlightenment and such giants of literature as Lesja Ukrajinka, Deržavin, Puškin and Tolstoj.

The present issue collects six articles written by leading specialists in Ukrainian Modernist literature on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Ukrainian writer and poet Lesja Ukrajinka.

This is an outline of the translations of Ukrainian literary works published in Italy over the last twenty years. The Author also gives some information about translations published in the periods following the First and Second World Wars. Moreover, the Author presents the difficulties translators and publishers face in their efforts to make Ukrainian literature better known in Italy, and briefly touches upon the translations of Russian-language Ukrainian literature and of literature on Ukrainian subjects written in other languages.

The Author examines the poem Oj, čoho ty počornilo. In the first part she uncovers echoes of the Ukrainian cultural tradition of the 17th-18th centuries: they permit to have a deeper insight into the signification of the poem. In the second part the Author focuses on some open issues concerning the interpretation of the text. Indeed, as shown by previous literary criticism, the apparently clear text contains several ambiguities. How should be understood the last two lines? Do they definitely condemn the Ukrainians of the 19th century to eternal loss of hope about the possibility of ever having a state and freedom? Or is there a possibility of future rescue? Some of the interpretations suggested by Smal'-Stoc'kyj are -- at least partially -- convincing. Nonetheless, the Author maintains that to really penetrate it, one needs to read any poem of Ševčenko's in the context of the whole of his poetical corpus. Moreover, the 'poetics of fragment', that was widely spread in Russian and other European literatures of Romanticism, may offer useful tools for further investigation of this poem and of Ševčenko's poetry in general. Issues connected with the borderlands of imperial or national states and cultures, with the "frontier" society or with overlapping cultures and historical memories have been discussed in depth by scholars of historical, political and social sciences. In literature, mainly in the Slavic areas, the problem has only just come to the fore. Two important books have been published recently, one in in the usa, the other in Ukraine. A. Glaser sees the "marketplace" as the real and metaphorical chronotope of a multifaceted society which lived and produced real chef-d'oeuvres in the borderlands of the Russian Empire. Some typological analogies may be found in a book publihed in L'viv about the "many literatures" in the Galician lands of the Hapsburg Empire.
