This paper provides an analysis of the literature on transnational education to identify the key challenges and success factors for the sustainable operation of transnational higher education (TNE) programmes as perceived by key stakeholders. Probing the stakeholders' perspectives and applying a systematic approach, this study analyses 227 English-written articles retrieved from the Web of Science database published from 2000 to 2021. Key challenges identified include difficulties in managing the TNE programmes, ensuring quality assurance, adapting the curricula to the local contexts, accommodating offshore students' learning styles, creating studying environments for TNE students equivalent to those in the home institutions, ensuring preparedness of the academic staff, and facilitating the knowledge transfer in the host countries. The analysis also highlights six factors for the sustainable development of TNE programmes, including the effectiveness of the operations, the internationalization of the curricula, the transnational experience of the students, the development of the transnational staff, the existence of a proper regulatory framework in the host countries, and the development of a global systematic data collection for quality assurance. In addition, the evidence collected suggests that while the transition from domestic into a foreign programme can be rewarding, it demands appropriate planning and implementation.

This paper aims to explore the potential of using dialogue between intersectional and pragmatist theorising of transactional social relations. By considering tensions within intersectional research, a position is developed which utilises a mutual constitution approach to intersectional theory and the dynamic, ongoing, complex social relations captured in pragmatist theorising. It is argued that from this position race and ethnicity become actions in which, for example, Whiteness and Brownness are defined in ongoing relation to each other. Example data from a pilot study, designed to explore experiences of campus life, is analysed using this action sense of race. The 'Racing' of experience within the data identifies how Whiteness and Brownness become constituted through a Male, South Asian, Muslim student's experience of studying sport. Whiteness in this context becomes secular, partying, and sporty-bravado-competitive, while Brownness is supressed Islamic, working not to perpetuate crude Brown-Muslim stereotypes and upset convivial, post-racial discourses. It is envisaged that further data collection from student experiences of studying on the university campus will help to develop deeper insight, and importantly, dialogue about race, ethnicity and privilege.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented shifts to higher education globally, including Canadian universities. In this paper I utilize an extended photo essay method and narrative response to document the changes seen in my local university environment during the months of April through September 2020. Emerging literature and survey results concerning the Canadian academic condition during the pandemic are discussed alongside research diary entries and policy excerpts.

Research into higher education has shown that for those who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans* and/or Queer (LGBTQ), universities are places where both direct and indirect discrimination is experienced. This paper reports the findings from a systematic search and review on gender and sexual diversity in professional practice placements. This was part of a broader project exploring the way that students were supported and educated to provide appropriate support for LGBTQ people using their services and whether students who identified as LGBTQ experienced specific issues regarding the (non)disclosure of their gender or sexual diversity in placement settings. Three primary themes were identified. Environment: which relates to the way that homophobic and transphobic discrimination is experienced in professional practice. Influence: the importance of faculty on the environment as both a positive and negative force. Interventions: how students support LGBTQ people who use their services and how educators intervene with students who identify as LGBTQ. Our review showed how students in all included disciplines report feeling under-prepared for the realities of working with LGBTQ people in practice. However there are examples of positive practices which can support LGBTQ students through navigating disclosure of their own identities, as well as enabling all students to act as advocates and allies for the LGBTQ service users and peers/colleagues that they will inevitably work with and alongside, throughout their careers.

Our paper examines the rise of a new category of professional support staff whom we refer to as 'audit-market intermediaries' in the context of a rapidly changing regulatory and funding environment in British higher education. We explore the roles they play in articulating environmental changes in research-intensive universities related to the auditing of teaching via demands for quality assurance and the marketisation of higher education via the rise of the student as a fee-paying consumer. The qualitative data reveals the internal and external sources of legitimacy and power of the audit-market intermediaries as well their contestation. We show how these actors serve as mediators of audit and market forces undertaking institutional work by translating, amplifying or buffering-related pressures within the university; and point at the relevance of the specific organisational context for understanding differing patterns of their institutional work.

This study explored the perceptions of a US university campus climate by international students and analyzed strategies that they used to socially and academically integrate their campuses. The sample consisted of international students who have at least completed two years of their college education. Individual interviews and focus group were used for data collection. A combination of content analysis and constant comparison method were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that self-determination has influenced the intercultural strategies of integration used by international students on a US university campus. The study includes recommendations for student services personnel to help international students' social and academic integration beyond the first two years in college. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research underpinning this article explores the impacts that parenting and primary caring responsibilities have upon academic careers. It takes an innovative approach by exploring three under-researched aspects of this issue: the longitudinal impacts that extend past the years immediately following the birth or adoption of a child; the differences and similarities that occur as a result of primary carer parenting across academic disciplines; and the impacts that primary carer parenting has upon the careers of those who are employed in senior academic levels. With these three aspects in mind, the research explores the strategies employed to cope with the impacts that birth or adoption has upon academic careers. In doing so, it broadens conceptual understandings of the career impacts of parenting, while offering recommendations for university administrators and leaders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the meaning and experience of retention and withdrawal in higher education from the perspective and voices of non-traditional adult students. It draws on UK biographical data from a European study on access, retention and withdrawal. Withdrawal is perceived negatively by higher education institutions and policymakers as it has an economic cost and reflects on the efficiency of an institution and the student who leaves is viewed as a failure. This article challenges the “traditional” view and argues that non-completion is not always a negative act as many of the students who left in this study talked about the benefits they had gained in terms of learning, identity and the development of the self. Two in-depth biographical case studies are outlined: one student who completes and one who leaves. Both employed their agency and determination in ways which were positive to them but different.
