Abstract

An essay is presented which argues that the 17th century English poet authored the pamphlet "The Censure of the Rota" which criticized the poet Andrew Marvell. According to the author, Butler's relationship with the Duke of Buckingham and English churchman Samuel Parker suggests that he would defend them against Marvell. The literary careers of Butler and poet John Milton are also explored in terms of Butler's "Hudibras" and Milton's "Paradise Lost." Mock-heroic and Christian heroic poetry are also covered.

Abstract

The article discusses the Christian symbolism in book eight of the epic poem "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. It addresses the question of which Person of the Trinity is represented as creating Adam and Eve. Milton did not clearly specify this, but used ambiguous phrases such as a "shape Divine" in his descriptions. An argument is presented that the symbolism works best if the shape Divine is thought of as representing Christ the Son, the second Person of the Trinity.

Abstract

A literary criticism is presented of the Old English poem "The Dream of the Rood." Of particular interest is the idea that Anglo-Saxon poets believed the human mind was contained. In this poem and others, including "Juliana" and the "Homiletic Fragment II," a treasure motif is used to associate wisdom and the mind with holy relics like the True Cross in the poem. The religious significance of dreams according to the Anglo-Saxons is also considered.
