The decaying prices and improving efficiency of bifacial solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies make them most promising for harnessing solar radiation. Deserts have a high solar potential, but harsh conditions like high temperatures and dust negatively affect the performance of any proposed solar system. The most attractive aspect of deserts is their long-term sustainability, as they are free from urban and agricultural expansion. In this work, the System Advisor Model (SAM) software version 2023.12.17 was used to model a 100 MW PV plant and evaluate the techno-economic performance of fixed, 1-axis, and 2-axis bifacial systems under the climatic conditions of six deserts from around the world. This study explores technical parameters such as the performance ratio, specific yield, and capacity factor. Additionally, the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) indicator was used to compare the economic performance of the different systems. Results showed high specific yield: the averages for the three systems in six deserts were 2040, 2372, and 2555 kWh/kWp, respectively. Economic analysis found that an LCOE below 4 ¢/kWh is achievable in all deserts, reaching a minimum of 2.45 ¢/kWh under favorable conditions. Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are becoming increasingly popular because they offer a sustainable and cost-effective solution for generating electricity. PV panels are the most critical components of PV systems as they convert solar energy into electric energy. Therefore, analyzing their reliability, risk, safety, and degradation is crucial to ensuring continuous electricity generation based on its intended capacity. This paper develops a failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) methodology to assess the reliability of and risk associated with polycrystalline PV panels. Generalized severity, occurrence, and detection rating criteria are developed that can be used to analyze various solar PV systems as they are or with few modifications. The analysis is based on various data sources, including field failures, literature reviews, testing, and expert evaluations. Generalized severity, occurrence, and detection rating tables are developed and applied to solar panels to estimate the risk priority number (RPN) and the overall risk value. The results show that the encapsulant, junction box, and failures due to external events are the most critical components from both the RPN and risk perspectives. Delamination and soiling are the panels' most critical FMs, with RPN values of 224 and 140, respectively, contributing 16.2% to the total RPN. Further, moderately critical FMs are also identified which contribute 56.3% to the RPN. The encapsulant is the most critical component, with RPN and risk values of 940 (40.30%) and 145 (23.40%), respectively. This work crucially contributes to sustainable energy practices by enhancing the reliability of solar PV systems, thus reducing potential operational inefficiencies. In this study, the technical and economic feasibility of employing pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES) systems at potential locations in Jordan is investigated. In each location, a 1 MWp off-grid photovoltaic (PV) system was installed near the dam reservoir to drive pumps that transfer water up to an upper reservoir at a certain distance and elevation. PVsyst (Version 7.3.4) is implemented to simulate the water flow rate pumped to the upper reservoir at each location. The water in the upper reservoir is presumed to flow back into the dam reservoir through a turbine during peak hours at night to power a 1 MW load. Based on the water volume in the upper reservoir, the power generated through the turbine was estimated using HOMER Pro® (Version 3.15.3), and the power exported to the grid (when the power generated from the turbine is more than the power required by the driven load) was also determined. It is worth mentioning that scaling up the size of PV and hydropower systems is a straightforward approach considering the modular nature of such systems. However, the quantity of water in the dam reservoir that is allowed to be pumped is the main determinant for the size of a PHES system. The technical and economic results show that the potential of employing these locations to implement PHES systems is great. In addition, a study was conducted to estimate how much CO2 emissions were reduced by generating renewable energy compared to generating the same amount of energy from fossil fuels. These systems increase renewable energy in the energy mix in Jordan, stabilize the grid, and balance the loads, especially during peak periods. Access to reliable and sustainable energy in remote areas remains a pressing global challenge, significantly affecting economic development and the quality of life. This study focuses on the implementation of fully off-grid wind–biogas hybrid power systems to address this issue, with a focus on remote healthcare camp facilities. This paper investigates the performance of a hybrid renewable energy system within the context of one of Jordan's northern remote areas, the Zaatari Syrian Refugee Camp, assessing its efficiency and environmental impact by taking the Zaatari hospital as the case study. Simulations were conducted to evaluate system components, including wind turbines, biogas generators, and diesel generators. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted, encompassing both the operational efficiency of the system and its impact on the environment. This study also considered various scenarios (SC#), including grid availability and autonomy levels, to optimize system configurations. The techno-economic assessment employed the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) as a key performance indicator, and sensitivity analyses explored the impact of diesel costs and wind power fluctuations on the system. Additionally, environmental assessment was conducted to evaluate the environmental effects of hybrid systems, with a specific focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This investigation involved an examination of emissions in three different scenarios. The results indicate that the lowest LCOE that could be achieved was 0.0734 USD/kWh in SC#1 with 72.42% autonomy, whereas achieving 100% autonomy increased the LCOE to 0.1756 USD/kWh. Additionally, the results reveal that in scenarios SC#2 and SC#3, which have a higher proportion of diesel generator usage, there were elevated levels of NOx and CO2 emissions. Conversely, in SC#1, which lacks diesel generators, emissions were notably lower. The proposed hybrid system demonstrates its potential to provide a reliable energy supply to healthcare facilities in remote regions, emphasizing both economic feasibility and environmental benefits. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems typically convert solar irradiance into electricity, thereby helping to reduce the need for fossil fuels and the amount of greenhouse gases released. They provide a reliable and continuous renewable source of energy. However, PV systems are continuously exposed to diverse and changing environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, dust, and rain. Exposure to such conditions creates electrical and visible faults in the PV systems. These faults may reduce the PV system's performance, reliability, and lifetime. In this regard, this paper aims to propose a framework/methodology for reliability modeling and assessment of large-scale grid-connected PV systems using a Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) approach. Specifically, an exhaustive literature survey is carried out to acquire the failure rates of different components/faults existing on the DC side of the PV system. Then, the Fussel-Vesely (F-V) importance measure is employed to identify critical faults and their criticality ranking. Results showed that solder bond failure, broken cell, broken interconnect (finger interruption), rack structure, grounding/lightning protection system, delamination, discoloration, and partial shading are the most critical faults which severely degrade the performance of the PV systems. In order to satisfy increasing energy demand and mitigate global warming worldwide, the implementation of photovoltaic (PV) clean energy installations needs to become common practice. However, solar energy is known to be dependent on several random factors, including climatic and geographic conditions. Prior to promoting PV systems, an assessment study of the potential of the considered location in terms of power yield should be conducted carefully. Manual assessment tools are unable to handle high amounts of data. In order to overcome this difficulty, this study aims to investigate various artificial intelligence (AI) models—with respect to various intuitive prediction benchmark models from the literature—for predicting solar energy yield in the Ha'il region of Saudi Arabia. Based on the daily data, seven seasonal models, namely, naïve (N), simple average (SA), simple moving average (SMA), nonlinear auto-regressive (NAR), support vector machine (SVM), Gaussian process regression (GPR) and neural network (NN), were investigated and compared based on the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) performance metrics. The obtained results showed that all the models provided good forecasts over three years (2019, 2020, and 2021), with the naïve and simple moving average models showing small superiority. The results of this study can be used by decision-makers and solar energy specialists to analyze the power yield of solar systems and estimate the payback and efficiency of PV projects. The accurate prediction of wind energy production is crucial for an affordable and reliable power supply to consumers. Prediction models are used as decision-aid tools for electric grid operators to dynamically balance the energy production provided by a pool of diverse sources in the energy mix. However, different sources of uncertainty affect the predictions, providing the decision-makers with non-accurate and possibly misleading information for grid operation. In this regard, this work aims to quantify the possible sources of uncertainty that affect the predictions of wind energy production provided by an ensemble of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. The proposed Bootstrap (BS) technique for uncertainty quantification relies on estimating Prediction Intervals (PIs) for a predefined confidence level. The capability of the proposed BS technique is verified, considering a 34 MW wind plant located in Italy. The obtained results show that the BS technique provides a more satisfactory quantification of the uncertainty of wind energy predictions than that of a technique adopted by the wind plant owner and the Mean-Variance Estimation (MVE) technique of literature. Accurate modelling of the fuel cell characteristics curve is essential for the simulation analysis, control management, performance evaluation, and fault detection of fuel cell power systems. However, the big challenge in fuel cell modelling is the multi-variable complexity of the characteristic curves. In this paper, we propose the implementation of a computer graphic technique called Bézier curve to approximate the characteristics curves of the fuel cell. Four different case studies are examined as follows: Ballard Systems, Horizon H-12 W stack, NedStackPS6, and 250 W proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The main objective is to minimize the absolute errors between experimental and calculated data by using the control points of the Bernstein–Bézier function and de Casteljau's algorithm. The application of this technique entails subdividing the fuel cell curve to some segments, where each segment is approximated by a Bézier curve so that the approximation error is minimized. Further, the performance and accuracy of the proposed techniques are compared with recent results obtained by different metaheuristic algorithms and analytical methods. The comparison is carried out in terms of various statistical error indicators, such as Individual Absolute Error (IAE), Relative Error (RE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Bias Errors (MBE), and Autocorrelation Function (ACF). The results obtained by the Bézier curve technique show an excellent agreement with experimental data and are more accurate than those obtained by other comparative techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
