Persistent, mobile and toxic substances have drawn attention nowadays due to their particular properties, but they are overlooked in human monitorization works, limiting the knowledge of the human exposome. In that sense, human urine is an interesting matrix since not only parent compounds are eliminated, but also their phase II metabolites that could act as biomarkers. In this work, 11 sample preparation procedures involving preconcentration were tested to ensure maximum analytical coverage in human urine using mixed-mode liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. The optimized procedure consisted of a combination of solid-phase extraction and salt-assisted liquid-liquid extraction and it was employed for suspect screening. Additionally, a non-discriminatory dilute-and-shoot approach was also evaluated. After evaluating the workflow in terms of limits of identification and type II errors (i.e., false negatives), a pooled urine sample was analysed. From a list of 1450 suspects and in-silico simulated 1568 phase II metabolites (i.e. sulphates, glucuronides, and glycines), 44 and 14 substances were annotated, respectively. Most of the screened suspects were diverse industrial chemicals, but biocides, natural products and pharmaceuticals were also detected. Lastly, the complementarity of the sample preparation procedures, columns, and analysis conditions was assessed. The calibration of two passive samplers for the determination of 20 emerging organic compounds in seawater is described in this work: i) a new version of polar organic chemical integrative sampler (POCIS) containing 100 mg of mixed-mode anion exchanger (Strata X-AW) and 100 mg of polymeric HLB (Plexa) sorbent materials and using a highly porous Nylon membrane (30-μm pore size) and ii) polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fibre. Among the studied contaminants, herbicides, hormones, life style products (stimulants and artificial sweeteners), industrial chemicals (corrosion inhibitor and fluorinated compounds), personal care products and several pharmaceuticals were included. In the case of POCIS, both the sorbents and the Nylon membranes were extracted and analysed independently. The calibration set up consisted on a continuous-flow tank that was fed with a continuous flow of seawater (2 L/h) and a stock mixture of contaminants (20 mL/h), assuring a nominal concentration of ~ 600 ng/L (each analyte) in the tank. The uptake was linear in POCIS sorbent and Nylon membranes but exponential for PES hollow fibres. Furthermore, the highest sampling rates (Rs) values were obtained in POCIS sorbent (between 2.7 for acetaminophen and 491 mL/day for perfluoro-n-octanoic acid, PFOA) followed by Nylon membranes (between 3.6 for OBT and 50 mL/day for telmisartan) and the lowest were those from PES fibres (between 1.7 for bezafibrate and 157 mL/day for butylparaben). Additionally, five deuterated compounds ([ 2 H 5 ]-atrazine, [ 2 H 3 ]-amitriptyline, [ 2 H 7 ]-irbesartan, [ 2 H 3 ]-ketoprofen and [ 2 H 9 ]-progesterone) were studied as candidates for performance reference compounds (PRCs) in both POCIS and PES, and though [ 2 H 5 ]-atrazine, [ 2 H 9 ]-progesterone and [ 2 H 3 ]-amitriptyline showed acceptable results in the case of POCIS, only [ 2 H 5 ]-atrazine provided a good validation. In the case of PES fibres, the PRC corrections did not provide acceptable results due to a low dissipation of the PRCs. Finally, POCIS were deployed in two sites of the low part of the estuary of Bilbao (northern Spain) from where water samples were also taken and analysed. As a result, in addition to the overall good agreement between the passive and active samplings, passive samplers allowed the determination of several compounds that were below the detection limits in the active sampling., (Copyright © 2018. Comprehensive Two Dimensional Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC × GC/qMS) analysis of Cannabis sativa extracts shows a high complexity due to the large variety of terpenes and cannabinoids and to the fact that the complete resolution of the peaks is not straightforwardly achieved. In order to support the resolution of the co-eluted peaks in the sesquiterpene and the cannabinoid chromatographic region the combination of Multivariate Curve Resolution and Alternating Least Squares algorithms was satisfactorily applied. As a result, four co-eluting areas were totally resolved in the sesquiterpene region and one in the cannabinoid region in different samples of Cannabis sativa. The comparison of the mass spectral profiles obtained for each resolved peak with theoretical mass spectra allowed the identification of some of the co-eluted peaks. In this study a priority organic pollutants usually found in environmental water samples were considered to accomplish two extraction and analysis approaches. Among those compounds organochlorine compounds, pesticides, phthalates, phenols and residues of pharmaceutical and personal care products were included. The extraction and analysis steps were based on silicone rod extraction (SR) followed by liquid desorption in combination with large volume injection-programmable temperature vaporiser (LVI-PTV) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Variables affecting the analytical response as a function of the programmable temperature vaporiser (PTV) parameters were firstly optimised following an experimental design approach. The SR extraction and desorption conditions were assessed afterwards, including matrix modification, time extraction, and stripping solvent composition. Subsequently, the possibility of performing membrane enclosed sorptive coating extraction (MESCO) as a modified extraction approach was also evaluated. The optimised method showed low method detection limits (3-35 ng L(-1)), acceptable accuracy (78-114%) and precision values (<13%) for most of the studied analytes regardless of the aqueous matrix. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas-chromatography (GC×GC) is a great tool to explore complex essential oils. In this work the different terpene composition of the aroma fraction of rosemary and oregano were studied. The present investigation is based on the optimization of the comprehensive two-dimensional gas-chromatographic method through the use of experimental designs and Multisimplex, and studying the modulation period, discharge-time and first and second column flows. Making use of a non-polar column (HP-5) in the first dimension and an intermediate one (DB-17) in the second dimension, we concluded that 1.42s, 0.12s, 1.23 mL/min and 17.55 mL/min were our optimum values, respectively. The use of a highly polar phase in the second dimension did not make any significant improvement. Finally, aroma quantification of the studied plants was performed by means of the optimum method achieved and functional groups "bands" were studied. The analysis of hydrocarbons in chert rocks provides a worthwhile source of information regarding the geochemical features of a depositional setting. Since the typical analytical procedure requires long Soxhlet extractions and the use of large quantities of sample (30-50 g), in this work we have optimised the focused ultrasound extraction (FUSE) and the microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) to make available a less severe procedure. In both cases a full experimental design including solvent mixture composition (Dichloromethane/Hexane/Acetone) and process variables (sonication time and cycles, and extraction temperature and time) by means of D-optimal designs. In the extracted fractions hydrocarbons (C(16)-C(40)) were analysed by gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. In the case of FUSE the process variables were the most sensitive variables and the optimum conditions were defined at 60:40 DCM/Hex mixture and a sonication time of 30 min and 9 cycles. In the case of MAE all the variables shown a significant effect on the extraction yield and the most adequate conditions (60:30:10 DCM/Hex/Ace mixture and an irradiation time of 15 min at 110 °C) were established from the analysis of the response surface. Both methods were systematically applied with different chert samples collected in Cucho (Trebiño County, Burgos, Spain) and we were able to assure quantitative extractions (>85%) in the first extraction. The protolytic behavior of d-gluconic-delta-lactone acid has been studied by means of automated potentiometric titrations at different ionic strengths in the range 0.1

The potentiometric determination of the protonation constant of 2-chlorophenol in NaCl media at different ionic strengths and its distribution coefficient between these media and two organic solvents at 25 degrees C are presented. An automated potentiometric system was used, and the determination of the constants was carried out using both graphical and numerical methods. A thermodynamic model using the modified Bromley methodology has been constructed for the prediction of protonation constants and distribution coefficients in NaCl media. The relevance of this study to the development of supported liquid membrane recovery systems is discussed.
