Highly efficient background-correction techniques applicable to voltammetric methods of trace analysis can be developed by modulating the convection rate of the solution at a solid electrode surface. The theoretical aspects, advantages, disadvantages, and analytical applications of the various batch and flow approaches to hydrodynamic modulation voltammetry are discussed, together with trends in future developments.

A new electroanalytical technique is described, called "stripping voltammetry with collection." The technique involves the use of a rotating ring-disk electrode and is an improvement over traditional voltammetric stripping at a single electrode in that it is characterized by a lower limit of detection and that the period of deposition before stripping can be shorter. The use of the technique is illustrated by the determination of 10(-10)M Ag(+) in 0.1 M H(2)SO(4) by use of a ring-disk electrode having a disk electrode constructed of glassy carbon and a ring electrode constructed of platinum.

Differential pulse anodic-stripping voltammetry at a stationary mercury-film electrode with the solution stirred during the deposition step has been investigated. The sensitivity achieved by using such a simple set-up is similar to that obtained with a mercury-film rotating disk electrode. The effects of various experimental parameters on the peak current are described. Lead and cadmium were used as test systems, and gave detection limits of around 1 × 10 −10 M with 5-min deposition times.
