The impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic on schools was massive and unprecedented. Many schools were forced to close, and teachers were forced to deliver their instruction online with a very short notice. To assist K-12 teachers to teach remotely, a simple instructional design model, CAFE (Content, Activities, Facilitation, & Evaluation), was created. This article describes the context in which CAFE was created and the three stages of improvement it went through from a simple instructional design table to the instructional design model. The 24th Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCCCE) was held September 12–16, 2020 at Northwest Normal University, Lanzhou, China. The GCCCE adopted a hybrid conference format for the first time, combining traditional face-to-face sessions and online live streaming to reduce the impact from the Covid-19 pandemic. The GCCCE hosted over 300 current presentations, roundtables, and poster sessions in its nine sub-conferences and one English paper session. With a theme of "Innovation and Reform on Technology Empowered Education," the GCCCE organized four keynote speeches, two expert symposiums, six workshops, one teacher forum, and one doctoral consortium. Over 300 attendees were at the GCCCE site in Lanzhou, China. The presentations, roundtables, and posters were live steaming during the conference. The live streaming conference sessions and their video recordings achieved a total of accumulative views over 330,000 times by the end of October 2020 with their viewers from different countries and regions. The 22nd Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCCCE) was held May 25-29, 2018, at South China Normal University, Guangzhou, China. Broadcasting live on the Internet, the Conference had 424 onsite participants with 299,816 online viewers from different countries and regions. To explore the potential for building multicultural awareness in university students using synchronous technology, faculty members from an American regional state university and a Chinese regional university collaborated to find appropriate ways to integrate synchronous technology (e.g., Adobe Connect) into a teacher education program in the American university and in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program in China. The article focuses on the collaborative research to find ways to integrate Second Life (SL), a multiuser virtual environment (MUVE) to English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. The research is a collaboration between the Georgia State University in the U.S. and the Yantai University in China. It also sought to explore the different facets of the EFL learning within the Second Life. The research is undertaken through the social constructivist principles applied to EFL learning and employs design-based method to investigate related issues and problems to determine practical solutions relate to the enforcement of EFL in Chinese educational system. It highlights the 2008 and 2009 pilot EFL programs, program evaluation, and provided recommendations to improve EFL programs within SL.

The article discusses a study which evaluates the impact of student collaboration in the construction of electronic portfolio. An evaluation research was conducted in the integration course offered at the Teacher Education Environments in Mathematics and Science (TEEMS) Program at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Geogia. The student participants were given time in class for portfolio construction, in which the student collaboration was not regulated. After the electronic portfolios were evaluated using rubrics, it was found that portfolios constructed through collaboration had higher points than individually constructed ones. The study found no evidence associating collaboration in portfolios and improvement in student assignment and technology efficiency.
