The November 1st 1755 earthquake remains the most powerful and destructive to hit Europe so far. Although frequently associated with the city of Lisbon, this earthquake caused similar or greater damage and casualties in the southwest of the Algarve, where the seismic intensity was estimated at IX-X Mercalli Intensity Scale. Some minutes later, a tsunami increased the dimension of the disaster. Using simple techniques of simulation, we estimated the potential impacts of the occurrence of a similar event to the 1755 tsunami nowadays in Portimão.

Três casos são apresentados neste artigo- as maiores inundações de Lisboa desde há 30 anos (sábado, 18 de Outubro, ao fim da tarde), as inundações de Monchique, no Algarve (domingo, 26 de Outubro, entre as duas e as duas e meia da madrugada) e as inundações mortíferas do Alentejo (quarta-feira, 5 de Novembro, ao fim da tarde). Em todos se verificaram grandes quantidades de precipitação, mas em todos também o homem pode ser mais ou menos responsabilizado pelo excesso de prejuízos.

Three study cases are introduced in this paper-the most important floods in Lisbon after 30 years (saturday, 18th October, evening), the floods in Monchique, Algarve (sunday, the 26th October, between 2 and 2.30 a.m.) and the deadly floods of the Alentejo (wednesday, the 5th November, evening). In all the cases big amounts of rain were registered. The "fire season" of 1993 had special conditions that contributed to the development of (big) forest fires in the occidental coast, where they are less frequent. The most important fires occurred in only one climatic sequence, which lead to the progressive increase of fire risk, that geographically were distributed by a few areas, one in the central area of the country and the other one in Algarve., A "época de fogos" de 1993 revestiu-se de condições especiais que permitiram o desenvolvimento de grandes incêndios florestais na orla costeira ocidental, onde são pouco frequentes. Os fogos importantes ocorreram numa única sequência climática, a qual levou ao progressivo agravamento do risco do incêndio. Geograficamente, distribuíram-se por áreas situadas na Região Centro e no Algarve.
