Abstract

The activity of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and muscle fiber cross-sectional area (CSA) of cat tibialis exhibit a better correlation with myosin heavy chain (MHC) phenotype than with the motor unit type, suggesting the extent of influence of motoneurons on properties of muscle fibers in self-reinnervated muscles. Conversion of the different fibers of the various units to a single homogenic entity does not take place.

Abstract

Various factors influence the anabolic effect on skeletal muscle upon growth hormone (GH) administration and exercise training in hindlimb suspended (HS) rats. The anabolic effect is regulated by factors such as the muscle type, hormonal status of the animal and the exercise training used. Bioassays reveal reduced levels of GH in HS rats during space flight. Loading and reduced GH level increase the susceptibility of skeletal muscle to atrophy.
