We present results of a search for emission-line galaxies in the Southern Fields of the Hubble Space Telescope PEARS (Probing Evolution And Reionization Spectroscopically) grism survey. The PEARS South Fields consist of five ACS pointings (including the Hubble Ultra Deep Field) with the G800L grism for a total of 120 orbits, revealing thousands of faint object spectra in the GOODS-South region of the sky. Emission-line galaxies (ELGs) are one subset of objects that are prevalent among the grism spectra. Using a 2-dimensional detection and extraction procedure, we find 320 emission lines orginating from 226 galaxy "knots'' within 192 individual galaxies. Line identification results in 118 new grism-spectroscopic redshifts for galaxies in the GOODS-South Field. We measure emission line fluxes using standard Gaussian fitting techniques. At the resolution of the grism data, the H-beta and [OIII] doublet are blended. However, by fitting two Gaussian components to the H-beta and [OIII] features, we find that many of the PEARS ELGs have high [OIII]/H-beta ratios compared to other galaxy samples of comparable luminosities. The star-formation rates (SFRs) of the ELGs are presented, as well as a sample of distinct giant star-forming regions at z~0.1-0.5 across individual galaxies. We find that the radial distances of these HII regions in general reside near the galaxies' optical continuum half-light radii, similar to those of giant HII regions in local galaxies.

We apply Bayesian statistics with prior probabilities of galaxy surface luminosity (SL) to improve photometric redshifts. We apply the method to a sample of 1266 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the GOODS North and South fields at 0.1 < z < 2.0. We start with spectrophotometric redshifts (SPZs) based on Probing Evolution and Reionization Spectroscopically grism spectra, which cover a wavelength range of 6000-9000A, combined with (U)BViz(JHK) broadband photometry in the GOODS fields. The accuracy of SPZ redshifts is estimated to be \sigma (\Delta(z))=0.035 with an systematic offset of -0.026, where \Delta(z)=\Delta z / (1+z), for galaxies in redshift range of 0.5 < z < 1.25. The addition of the SL prior probability helps break the degeneracy of SPZ redshifts between low redshift 4000 A break galaxies and high-redshift Lyman break galaxies which are mostly catastrophic outliers. For the 1138 galaxies at z < 1.6, the fraction of galaxies with redshift deviation \Delta (z) > 0.2 is reduced from 15.0% to 10.4%, while the rms scatter of the fractional redshift error does not change much., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, published in AJ

We present redshifts for 115 emission line objects in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) identified through the GRism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) project using the slitless grism spectroscopy mode of the ACS Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The sample was selected by an emission line search on all extracted 1-dimensional GRAPES spectra. We identify the emission lines using line wavelength ratios where multiple lines are detected in the grism wavelength range (5800A < lambda < 9600A), and using photometric redshift information where multiple lines are unavailable. We then derive redshifts using the identified lines. Our redshifts are accurate to delta(z) = 0.009, based on both statistical uncertainty estimates and comparison with published ground-based spectra. Over 40% of our sample is fainter than typical magnitude limits for ground-based spectroscopy (with i_{AB}>25 mag). Such emission lines would likely remain undiscovered without our deep survey. The emission line objects fall into 3 categories: 1) Most are low to moderate redshift galaxies (0 < z < 2), including many actively star forming galaxies with strong HII regions; 2) 9 are high redshift (4 < z < 7) Lyman-alpha emitters; and 3) at least 3 are candidate AGNs., 30 pages, 5 figures. We present an analysis of a deep, 172 ks Chandra observation of the Large Area Lyman Alpha Survey (LALA) Bo\"{o}tes field, obtained with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-I) on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This is one of the deepest Chandra images of the extragalactic sky; only the 2 Ms CDF-N and 1 Ms CDF-S are substantially deeper. A total of 168 X-ray sources were detected. The X-ray source counts were derived and compared with those from other Chandra deep surveys; the hard X-ray source density of the LALA Bo\"{o}tes field is 33% higher than that of CDF-S at the flux level of 2.0E-15 ergs/cm^2/s, confirming the field-to-field variances of the hard band source counts reported by previous studies. The deep exposure resolves > 72% of the 2-10 keV X-ray background. Our primary optical data are R-band imaging from NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS), with limiting magnitude of R = 25.7 (Vega, 3sigma, 4" diameter aperture). We have found optical counterparts for 152 of the 168 Chandra sources (90%). Among the R-band non-detected sources, not more than 11 of them can possibly be at z > 5, based on the hardness ratios of their X-ray emission and nondetections in bluer bands. The majority (~76%) of the X-ray sources are found to have log(f_X/f_R) within 0.0+-1, which are believed to be AGNs.Most of the X-ray faint/optically bright sources (log(f_X/f_R) 1.0), which are harder in X-ray and are probably obscured AGNs. Narrow-band searches for Lyman alpha emission are an efficient way of identifying star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. We present Keck telescope spectra confirming redshifts z = 5.7 for three objects discovered in the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey at Kitt Peak National Observatory. All three spectra show strong, narrow emission lines with the asymmetric profile that is characteristically produced in high redshift Lyman alpha emitters by preferential HI absorption in the blue wing of the line. These objects are undetected in deep Bw, V, R, and 6600A narrow-band images from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey and from LALA, as expected from Lyman break and Lyman alpha forest absorption at redshift z = 5.7. All three objects show large equivalent widths (>= 150A in the rest-frame), suggesting at least one of the following: a top-heavy initial mass function, very low stellar metallicity, or the presence of an active nucleus. We consider the case for an active nucleus to be weak in all three objects due to the limited width of the Lyman alpha emission line (< 500 km/s) and the absence of any other indicator of quasar activity. The three confirmed high redshift objects were among four spectroscopically observed targets drawn from the sample of 18 candidates presented by Rhoads and Malhotra (2001). Thus, these spectra support the Lyman alpha emitter population statistics from our earlier photometric study, which imply little evolution in number density from z=5.7 to z=4.5 and provide strong evidence that the reionization redshift is greater than 5.7.

We present mid-infrared maps and preliminary analysis for 61 galaxies observed with the ISOCAM instrument aboard the Infrared Space Observatory. Many of the general features of galaxies observed at optical wavelengths---spiral arms, disks, rings, and bright knots of emission---are also seen in the mid-infrared, except the prominent optical bulges are absent at 6.75 and 15 microns. In addition, the maps are quite similar at 6.75 and 15 microns, except for a few cases where a central starburst leads to lower 6.75/15 ratios in the inner region. We also present infrared flux densities and mid-infrared sizes for these galaxies. The mid-infrared color 6.75/15 shows a distinct trend with the far-infrared color 60/100. The quiescent galaxies in our sample (60/100 < 0.6) show 6.75/15 near unity, whereas this ratio drops significantly for galaxies with higher global heating intensity levels. Azimuthally-averaged surface brightness profiles indicate the extent to which the mid-infrared flux is centrally concentrated, and provide information on the radial dependence of mid-infrared colors. The galaxies are mostly well resolved in these maps: almost half of them have < 10% of their flux in the central resolution element. A comparison of optical and mid-infrared isophotal profiles indicates that the optical flux at 4400 Angstroms near the optical outskirts of the galaxies is approximately eight (seven) times that at 6.75 microns (15 microns), comparable with observations of the diffuse quiescent regions of the Milky Way.

We present spectroscopy of 76 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in CDF-S taken with the LDSS3 spectrograph on Magellan Telescope. These galaxies are selected to have emission lines with ACS grism data in the Hubble Space Telescope Probing Evolution and Reionization Spectroscopically (PEARS) grism Survey. The ACS grism spectra cover the wavelength range 6000-9700 \AA\ and most PEARS grism redshifts are based on a single emission line + photometric redshifts from broad-band colors; the Magellan spectra cover a wavelength range from 4000 {\AA} to 9000 {\AA}, and provide a check on redshifts derived from PEARS data. We find an accuracy of $\sigma_z$ = 0.006 for the ACS grism redshifts with only one catastrophic outlier. We probe for AGN in our sample via several different methods. In total we find 7 AGNs and AGN candidates out of 76 galaxies. Two AGNs are identified from the X-ray full-band luminosity, $L_{X-ray,FB}>10^{43}$ erg$\;$s$^{-1}$, the line widths and the power-law continuum spectra. Two unobscured faint AGN candidates are identified from the X-ray full-band luminosity $L_{X-ray,FB}\sim10^{41}$ erg$\;$s$^{-1}$, the hardness ratio and the column density, and the emission-line and X-ray derived SFRs. Two candidates are classified based on the line ratio of [NII]\lambda6584/H$\alpha$ versus [OIII]$\lambda$5007/H$\beta$ (BPT diagram), which are between the empirical and theoretical demarcation curves, i.e, the transition region from star-forming galaxies to AGNs.
