Search

HD 206893 B is a brown-dwarf companion orbiting inside the debris disk of its host star. We detect the brown dwarf in the Ms band using the Keck/NIRC2 instrument and vortex coronagraph. We measure its magnitude to be Ms=12.97_-0.11^0.10 . It is at an angular separation of 0``22 \ensuremath± 0''03, and a position angle of 39.6° \ensuremath± 5.4° east of north. Using this Ms-band measurement and the system age, we use three evolutionary models to estimate the mass to be 12-78 M_Jup. We analyze the atmospheric properties from 1-5 \ensuremathμm using a grid of simulated atmospheric models. We find that a sedimentation flux f_sed value \raisebox-0.5ex~0.2 provides the best fit to the data, suggesting high vertically extended clouds. In addition to the Sun, six other stars are known to harbor multiple planets and debris disks: HD 69830, HD 38529, HD 128311, HD 202206, HD 82943 and HR 8799. In this paper we set constraints on the location of the dust-producing planetesimals around the latter four systems. We use a radiative transfer model to analyze the spectral energy distributions of the dust disks (including two new Spitzer IRS spectra presented in this paper), and a dynamical model to assess the long-term stability of the planetesimals' orbits. As members of a small group of stars that show evidence of harboring a multiple planets and planetesimals, their study can help us learn about the diversity of planetary systems., Comment: Accepted by ApJ (18 pages, 19 figures - one figure added from last submission)

The A5V star Alcor has an M3-M4 dwarf companion, as evidenced by a novel astrometric technique. Imaging spectroscopy combined with adaptive optics coronagraphy allowed for the detection and spectrophotometric characterization of the point source at a contrast of ~6 J- and H-band magnitudes and separation of 1" from the primary star. The Spitzer Space Telescope has advanced debris disk science tremendously with a wealth of information on debris disks around nearby A, F, G, K, and M stars at 24 and 70 μm with the MIPS photometer and at 8-34 μm with IRS. Here we present 160 μm observations of a small subset of these stars. At this wavelength, the stellar photospheric emission is negligible and any detected emission corresponds to cold dust in extended Kuiper Belt analogs. However, the Spitzer 160 μm observations are limited in sensitivity by the large beam size which results in significant "noise" due to cirrus and extragalactic confusion. In addition, the 160 μm measurements suffer from the added complication of a light leak next to the star's position whose flux is proportional to the near-infrared flux of the star. We are able to remove the contamination from the leak and report 160 μm measurements or upper limits for 24 stars. Three stars (HD 10647, HD 207129, and HD 115617) have excesses at 160 μm that we use to constrain the properties of the debris disks around them. A more detailed model of the spectral energy distribution of HD 10647 reveals that the 70 and 160 μm emission could be due to small water ice particles at a distance of 100 AU, consistent with Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging of circumstellar material in the system.

The Infrared Space Observatory was used to search for a tracer of the warm and dense neutral interstellar medium, the [O I] 63.18 micron line, in four ultraluminous IRAS sources lying at redshifts between 0.6 and 1.4. While these sources are quasars, their infrared continuum emission suggests a substantial interstellar medium. No [O I] flux was securely detected after probing down to a 3 sigma sensitivity level sufficient for detecting line emission in starbursts with similar continuum emission. However, if the detection threshold is slightly relaxed, one target is detected with 2.7 sigma significance. For this radio-quiet quasar there is likely a substantial dense and warm interstellar medium; the upper limits for the three radio-loud sources do not preclude the same conclusion. Using a new, uniformly-processed database of the ISO extragalactic far-infrared spectroscopy observations, it is shown that nearby Seyfert galaxies typically have higher [O I]-to-far-infrared ratios than do normal star-forming galaxies, so the lack of strong [O I] 63 micron emission from these high-redshift ultraluminous sources cannot be attributed to their active cores.

We present ISO-PHOT spectra of the regions 2.5-4.9um and 5.8-11.6um for a sample of 45 disk galaxies from the U.S. ISO Key Project on Normal Galaxies. The spectra can be decomposed into three spectral components: (1) continuum emission from stellar photospheres, which dominates the near-infrared (2.5- 4.9um; NIR) spectral region; (2) a weak NIR excess continuum, which has a color temperature of ~ 1000K, carries a luminosity of a few percent of the total far-infrared luminosity L(FIR), and most likely arises from the ISM; and (3) the well-known broad emission features at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 um, which are generally attributed to aromatic carbon particles. These aromatic features in emission (AFEs) dominate the mid-infrared (5.8-11.6 um; MIR) part of the spectrum, and resemble the so-called Type-A spectra observed in many non-stellar sources and the diffuse ISM in our own Galaxy. The relative strengths of the AFEs vary by 15-25% among the galaxies. However, little correlation is seen between these variations and either IRAS 60um-to-100um flux density ratio R(60/100) or the FIR-to-blue luminosity ratio L(FIR)/L(B), suggesting that the observed variations are not a direct consequence of the radiation field differences among the galaxies. We demonstrate that the NIR excess continuum and AFE emission are correlated, suggesting that they are produced by similar mechanisms and similar (or the same) material. On the other hand, as the current star-formation activity increases, the overall strengths of the AFEs and the NIR excess continuum drop significantly with respect to that of the far-infrared emission from large dust grains. This is likely a consequence of the preferential destruction in intense radiation fields of the small carriers responsible for the NIR/AFE emission.

We obtained J (1.25 μm), H (1.65 μm), and Ks (2.17 μm) photometry from the 2 Micron All-Sky Survey and 12, 25, 60, and 100 μm photometry from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog of 2834 field stars. We identified in this sample 296 main-sequence (luminosity class IV, IV-V, or V) stars. We searched the sample of main-sequence stars for excess 12 μm emission with respect to J, H, and Ks photospheric emission. We discovered eight systems with 12 μm excess emission newly reported here. These excesses are likely to be from Vega-type circumstellar dust, but small-aperture photometry is needed to confirm their nature. Preliminary models that assume the excesses are circumstellar show the dust to be located ~1-10 AU from the stars, where it is heated to "terrestrial" temperatures, ~200-500 K. Colder dust might also exist in the systems but below the IRAS sensitivity limit. The exception is HD 93331 (B9.5 V), previously known for its IRAS far-infrared excess.

We present deep ISOCAM observations taken at 4.5 μm (LW1) in search of a faint halo surrounding the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4565. Such a halo might exist if the massive halo that is needed to explain the flat rotation curve of this galaxy were attributable to a population of faint, red objects. The upper limit, 5.4 kJy sr-1 (3 σ) at 20 kpc, reported here excludes a halo consisting of late-M dwarfs distributed in a spherical halo but not of lower luminosity brown dwarf stars.

We report the discovery of four field methane ("T"-type) brown dwarfs using Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) data. One additional methane dwarf, previously discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, was also identified. Near-infrared spectra clearly show the 1.6 and 2.2 μm CH_4 absorption bands characteristic of objects with T_(eff) ≾ 1300 K as well as broadened H_2O bands at 1.4 and 1.9 μm. Comparing the spectra of these objects with that of Gl 229B, we propose that all new 2MASS T dwarfs are warmer than 950 K, in order from warmest to coolest: 2MASS J1217-03, 2MASS J1225-27, 2MASS J1047+21, and 2MASS J1237+65. Based on this preliminary sample, we find a warm T dwarf surface density of 0.0022 T dwarfs deg^(-2), or ~90 warm T dwarfs over the whole sky detectable to J < 16. The resulting space density upper limit, 0.01 T dwarfs pc^(-3), is comparable to that of the first L dwarf sample from Kirkpatrick et al.

Before the 2-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) began, only six objects were known with spectral types later than M9.5 V. In the first 371 sq. deg. of actual 2MASS survey data, we have identified another twenty such objects spectroscopically confirmed using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (LRIS) at the W.M. Keck Observatory.

We present the first results from the ISO-IRAS Faint Galaxy Survey (IIFGS), a program designed to obtain ISO observations of the most distant and luminous galaxies in the IRAS Faint Source Survey by filling short gaps in the ISO observing schedule with pairs of 12 μm ISOCAM and 90 μm ISOPHOT observations. As of 1997 October, over 500 sources have been observed, with an ISOCAM detection rate over 80%, covering over 1.25 deg^2 of sky to an 11.5 μm point-source completeness limit of approximately 1.0 mJy (corresponding to a ~10 σ detection sensitivity). Observations are presented for nine sources detected by ISOPHOT and ISOCAM early in the survey for which we have ground-based G- and I-band images and optical spectroscopy. The ground-based data confirm that the IIFGS strategy efficiently detects moderate-redshift (z = 0.11-0.38 for this small sample) strong emission line galaxies with L_(60 μm) ≳ 10^(11) L_☉; one of our sample has L_(60 μm) > 10^(12) L_☉ (H_0 = 75 km s^(-1) Mpc^(-1), Ω = 1). The infrared-optical spectral energy distributions are comparable to those of nearby luminous infrared galaxies, which span the range from pure starburst (e.g., Arp 220) to infrared QSO (Mrk 231). Two of the systems show signs of strong interaction, and four show active galactic nucleus (AGN)-like excitation; one of the AGNs, F15390+6038, which shows a high excitation Seyfert 2 spectrum, has an unusually warm far- to mid-infrared color and may be an obscured QSO. The IIFGS sample is one of the largest and deepest samples of infrared-luminous galaxies available, promising to be a rich sample for studying infrared-luminous galaxies up to z ~ 1 and for understanding the evolution of infrared galaxies and the star formation rate in the universe.

We have obtained follow-up spectroscopy of eight late dwarf candidates discovered in a 105 deg2 area observed with the 2MASS Prototype Camera during test runs between 1992 and 1994. These objects were chosen because of their red infrared colors (e.g., J-Ks ≥ 1.10) and/or red OIR colors (e.g., R-Ks ≥ 6.00). All eight are late M dwarfs, six of which have spectral types later than van Biesbroeck 8 (type M7 V). Despite the fact that we have only followed up a fraction of the reddest sources discovered, the number of known M dwarfs of type M7 and cooler has been increased by 30%. Extrapolation of these results alone shows that over 2000 dwarfs of similar spectral type and with Ks ≤ 14.0 will be imaged by 2MASS over the entire sky. One of these new discoveries is astonishingly cool and has a tentative type of ≥M10 V. This dwarf, one of the least luminous objects yet discovered, could itself be a high-mass brown dwarf, thus providing another empirical data point in a regime where few such objects are now recognized. Only the substellar suspect GD 165 B and the bona fide brown dwarf GL 229 B, both discovered as companions to known stars, are cooler. Thus, this 2MASS discovery becomes the coolest isolated object so far identified.

We use high time cadence, high spectral resolution optical observations to detect excess H-alpha emission from the 2 - 3 Myr old weak lined T Tauri star PTFO8-8695. This excess emission appears to move in velocity as expected if it were produced by the suspected planetary companion to this young star. The excess emission is not always present, but when it is, the predicted velocity motion is often observed. We have considered the possibility that the observed excess emission is produced by stellar activity (flares), accretion from a disk, or a planetary companion; we find the planetary companion to be the most likely explanation. If this is the case, the strength of the H-alpha line indicates that the emission comes from an extended volume around the planet, likely fed by mass loss from the planet which is expected to be overflowing its Roche lobe., Comment: 41 pages, 10 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Upsilon Andromedae is an F8V star known to have an extrasolar system of at least 3 planets in orbit around it. Here we report the discovery of a low-mass stellar companion to this system. The companion shares common proper motion, lies at a projected separation of ~750 AU, and has a spectral type of M4.5V. The effect of this star on the radial velocity of the brighter primary is negligible, but this system provides an interesting testbed for stellar planetary formation theory and understanding dynamical stability since it is the first multiple planetary system known in a multiple stellar system.

To move one step forward toward a Galactic distribution of planets, we present the first planet sensitivity analysis for microlensing events with simultaneous observations from space and the ground. We present this analysis for two such events, OGLE-2014-BLG-0939 and OGLE-2014-BLG-0124, which both show substantial planet sensitivity even though neither of them reached high magnification. This suggests that an ensemble of low to moderate magnification events can also yield significant planet sensitivity and therefore probability to detect planets. The implications of our results to the ongoing and future space-based microlensing experiments to measure the Galactic distribution of planets are discussed., 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; ApJ in press

Kappa Andromedae is a B9IVn star at 52 pc for which a faint substellar companion separated by 55 AU was recently announced. In this work, we present the first spectrum of the companion, "kappa And B," using the Project 1640 high-contrast imaging platform. Comparison of our low-resolution YJH-band spectra to empirical brown dwarf spectra suggests an early-L spectral type. Fitting synthetic spectra from PHOENIX model atmospheres to our observed spectrum allows us to constrain the effective temperature to ~2000K, as well as place constraints on the companion surface gravity. Further, we use previously reported log(g) and effective temperature measurements of the host star to argue that the kappa And system has an isochronal age of 220 +/- 100 Myr, older than the 30 Myr age reported previously. This interpretation of an older age is corroborated by the photometric properties of kappa And B, which appear to be marginally inconsistent with other 10-100 Myr low-gravity L-dwarfs for the spectral type range we derive. In addition, we use Keck aperture masking interferometry combined with published radial velocity measurements to rule out the existence of any tight stellar companions to kappa And A that might be responsible for the system's overluminosity. Further, we show that luminosity enhancements due to a nearly "pole-on" viewing angle coupled with extremely rapid rotation is unlikely. Kappa And A is thus consistent with its slightly evolved luminosity class (IV) and we propose here that kappa And, with a revised age of 220 +/- 100 Myr, is an interloper to the 30 Myr Columba association with which it was previously associated. The photometric and spectroscopic evidence for kappa And B combined with our re-assesment of the system age implies a substellar companion mass of 50^{+16}_{-13} Jupiter Masses, consistent with a brown dwarf rather than a planetary mass companion., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 17 pages, 13 figures

Flux-calibrated imagery in five emission-line and four narrow-band continuum filters are presented for three classical Herbig-Haro (HH) objects, HH 7-11, HH 12, and HH 34. 1.64 micron forbidden Fe II emission is detected in all three objects whose intensity is typically 20 percent. This line should be an excellent tracer of shocked ionized gas in highly obscured regions. Extinction appears to be unimportant in determining the morphology of these HH object systems. No near-IR continuum emission was detected from any of the HH objects, implying that these regions do not contain embedded stars. At positions where the flow terminates against a large obstacle, there are significant offsets between the shocked flow material and the shocked ambient medium.

The paper presents 1.644 micron forbidden-line Fe II and 1.570 micron continuum images of the Crab Nebula which are compared with optical H-alpha, forbidden-line O III, and 5100 A continuum data. While the same prominent filaments are generally apparent in all lines, no substantial variations within the nebula in the strength and morphology of forbidden-line Fe II relative to the other lines are found. The infrared to optical continuum ratio of the synchrotron nebula shows 15 - 20 percent variations which are dominated by features which appear related to the position of the pulsar. These are interpreted as variations of 0.15 in the spectral index and it is suggested that they are related to the radiative decay of energetic particles and the paths over which these particles travel from the pulsar throughout the nebula.

Infrared and radio continuum observations of the multiple infrared source GL 437 show that it consists of a compact H II region plus two objects which are probably early B stars undergoing rapid mass loss. The group of sources appears to be a multiple system of young stars that have recently emerged from the near side of a molecular cloud. Emission in the unidentified 3.3 micron feature is associated with, but more extended than, the emission from the compact H II region; it probably arises from hot dust grains at the interface between the H II region and the molecular cloud.

Observations have been made with the Very Large Array, mainly at 5 GHz, of a sample of galaxies with high far-infrared luminosities selected from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) minisurvey. The surface brightnesses of the minisurvey sources are greater than those of the disks of normal galaxies but are similar to those of the central radio sources in these galaxies; the minisurvey sources, however, have much larger luminosities and physical sizes than these central sources. On the basis of the available data at all wavelengths, it is concluded that the far-infrared and radio emission from the minisurvey galaxies is caused by star formation, not by active nuclei. It is found that the size of the radio source is inversely correlated with the 60-100 micron color temperature but is independent of the far-infrared luminosity.

Neutral carbon emission has been observed at 610 μm (492 GHz) from the region of an interface between the HII region NGC 1977 and the northern extension of the dense OMC2 cloud in Orion.

A search for sub-mm C I emission from seven stars that are surrounded by dense molecular gas shells led to the detection, in the case of the "Egg Nebula' (AFGL 2688), of an 0.9 K line implying a C I/CO value greater than 5. The material surrounding this star must be extremely carbon-rich, and it is suggested that the apparently greater extent of the C I emission region may be due to the effects of the galactic UV field on the shell's chemistry, as suggested by Huggins and Glassgold (1982).

Some preliminary IRAS results in the form of images at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns of an 8 deg x 15 deg area around the galactic center are presented. These absolute intensity maps have unprecedented sensitivity combined with high angular resolution, wide field coverage, and large wavelength range. They give a broad view of the central galaxy revealing previously unseen details, especially in regions far from the central few arcmin. Well-defined infrared features in the nucleus correspond to the nuclear radio sources Sgr A, B2, C, and D. Extremely faint structures are detected, such as the cold molecular cloud associated with Sgr B2 which has never before been detected at wavelenths shorter than 40 microns.

Coadded IRAS survey data have been examined in the L1551 region. Extended low-surface-brightness 60 and 1200-micron emission is aligned with the molecular outflow from L1551 IRS 5. The morphology and the uniform surface brightness and color temperature of the IR emission suggest that the wind from IRS 5 is the source of this emission. It is suggested that radiative heating of grains by photons generated at the stellar wind/cloud interface is a major contributor to the extended infrared emission.
