The bubble nebula surrounding NGC 1313 X-2 is believed to be powered by high velocity winds from the central ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) as a result of supercritical accretion. With the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observation of the nebula, we find enhanced [O iii] emission at locations spatially coincident with clusters of stars and the central X-ray source, suggesting that photoionization in addition to shock ionization plays an important role in powering the nebula. The X-ray luminosity of the ULX and the number of massive stars in the nebula region can account for the required ionizing luminosity derived with MAPPINGS V, which also confirms that pure shocks cannot explain the observed emission line ratios.

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near the end of reionization using “dark gaps” in the Lyα forest. Using spectra of 55 QSOs at z em > 5.5, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme, we identify gaps in the Lyα forest where the transmission averaged over 1 comoving h −1 Mpc bins falls below 5%. Nine ultralong (L > 80 h −1 Mpc) dark gaps are identified at z < 6. In addition, we quantify the fraction of QSO spectra exhibiting gaps longer than 30 h −1 Mpc, F 30, as a function of redshift. We measure F 30 ≃ 0.9, 0.6, and 0.15 at z = 6.0, 5.8, and 5.6, respectively, with the last of these long dark gaps persisting down to z ≃5.3. Comparing our results with predictions from hydrodynamical simulations, we find that the data are consistent with models wherein reionization extends significantly below redshift six. Models wherein the IGM is essentially fully reionized that retain large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing UV background at z ≲6 are also potentially consistent with the data. Overall, our results suggest that signatures of reionization in the form of islands of neutral hydrogen and/or large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing background remain present in the IGM until at least z ≃ 5.3.

We report Chandra detection of three UV bright radio quiet quasars at $z\gtrsim5$. We have collected a sufficient number of photons to extract an X-ray spectrum of each quasar to measure their basic X-ray properties, such as the X-ray flux, power law photon index ($\Gamma$), and optical-to-X-ray spectral slope ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$). J074749+115352 at $z=5.26$ is the X-ray brightest radio-quiet quasar at $z>5$. It may have a short timescale variation (on a timescale of $\sim3800\rm~s$ in the observer's frame, or $\sim600\rm~s$ in the rest frame) which is however largely embedded in the statistical noise. We extract phase folded spectra of this quasar. There are two distinguishable states: a "high soft" state with an average X-ray flux $\sim2.7$ times of the "low hard" state, and a significantly steeper X-ray spectral slope ($\Gamma=2.40_{-0.32}^{+0.33}$ vs $1.78_{-0.24}^{+0.25}$). We also compare the three quasars detected in this paper to other quasar samples. We find that J074749+115352, with a SMBH mass of $M_{\rm SMBH}\approx1.8\times10^9\rm~M_\odot$ and an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\approx2.3$, is extraordinarily X-ray bright. It has an average $\alpha_{\rm OX}=-1.46\pm0.02$ and a 2-10 keV bolometric correction factor of $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm2-10keV}=42.4\pm5.8$, both significantly depart from some well defined scaling relations. We compare $\Gamma$ of the three quasars to other samples at different redshifts, and do not find any significant redshift evolution based on the limited sample of $z>5$ quasars with reliable measurements of the X-ray spectral properties., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by ApJ

Despite extensive efforts, only two quasars have been found at $z>7$ to date due to a combination of low spatial density and high contamination from more ubiquitous Galactic cool dwarfs in quasar selection. This limits our current knowledge of the super-massive black hole (SMBH) growth mechanism and reionization history. In this letter, we report the discovery of a luminous quasar at $z=7.021$, DELS J003836.10$-$152723.6 (hereafter J0038$-$1527), selected using photometric data from DESI Legacy imaging Survey (DELS), Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) imaging Survey, as well as Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore ($WISE$) mid-infrared all-sky survey. With an absolute magnitude of $M_{1450}$=$-$27.1 and bolometric luminosity of $L_{\rm Bol}$=5.6$\times$10$^{13}$ $L_\odot$, J0038$-$1527 is the most luminous quasar known at $z>7$. Deep optical to near infrared spectroscopic observations suggest that J0038-1527 hosts a 1.3 billion solar mass BH accreting at the Eddington limit, with an Eddington ratio of 1.25$\pm$0.19. The CIV broad emission line of J0038$-$1527 is blue-shifted by more than 3000 km s$^{-1}$ to the systemic redshift. More detailed investigations of the high quality spectra reveal three extremely high velocity CIV broad absorption lines (BALs) with velocity from 0.08 to 0.14 times the speed of light and total balnicity index of more than 5000 km s$^{-1}$, suggesting the presence of relativistic outflows. J0038$-$1527 is the first quasar found at the epoch of reionization (EoR) with such strong outflows and provides a unique laboratory to investigate AGN feedback on the formation and growth of the most massive galaxies in the early universe., ApJL in press

We present a spectroscopic survey of high-redshift, luminous galaxies over four square degrees on the sky, aiming to build a large and homogeneous sample of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\approx5.7$ and 6.5, and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at $5.5

Cosmological simulations suggest a strong correlation between high optical-depth Ly$\alpha$ absorbers, which arise from the intergalactic medium (IGM), and 3-D mass overdensities on scales of $10-30$ $h^{-1}$ comoving Mpc. By examining the absorption spectra of $\sim$ 80,000 QSO sight-lines over a volume of 0.1 Gpc$^3$ in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), we have identified an extreme overdensity, BOSS1441, which contains a rare group of strong Ly$\alpha$ absorbers at $z=2.32\pm 0.02$. This absorber group is associated with six QSOs at the same redshift on a 30 comoving Mpc scale. Using Mayall/MOSAIC narrowband and broadband imaging, we detect Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) down to $0.7\times L_{\rm{Ly\alpha}}^*$, and reveal a large-scale structure of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) in this field. Our follow-up Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) observations have spectroscopically confirmed 19 galaxies in the density peak. We show that BOSS1441 has an LAE overdensity of $10.8\pm 2.6$ on a 15 comoving Mpc scale which could collapse to a massive cluster with $M\gtrsim10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ at $z\sim0$. This overdensity is among the most massive large-scale structures at $z\sim2$ discovered to date.

Enormous Ly$\alpha$ Nebulae (ELANe), unique tracers of galaxy density peaks, are predicted to lie at the nodes and intersections of cosmic filamentary structures. Previous successful searches for ELANe have focused on wide-field narrowband surveys, or have targeted known sources such as ultraluminous quasi-stellar-objects (QSOs) or radio galaxies. Utilizing groups of coherently strong Ly$\alpha$ absorptions (CoSLAs), we have developed a new method to identify high-redshift galaxy overdensities and have identified an extremely massive overdensity, BOSS1441, at $z=2-3$ (Cai et al. 2016a). In its density peak, we discover an ELAN that is associated with a relatively faint continuum. To date, this object has the highest diffuse Ly$\alpha$ nebular luminosity of $L_{\rm{nebula}}=5.1\pm0.1\times10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Above the 2$\sigma$ surface brightness limit of SB$_{\rm{Ly\alpha}}= 4.8\times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$, this nebula has an end-to-end spatial extent of 442 kpc. This radio-quiet source also has extended \civ\ $\lambda1549$ and \heii\ $\lambda1640$ emission on $\gtrsim30$ kpc scales. Note that the Ly$\alpha$, \heii\ and \civ\ emission all have double-peaked line profiles. Each velocity component has a full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of $\approx700 - 1000$ km s$^{-1}$. We argue that this Ly$\alpha$ nebula could be powered by shocks due to an AGN-driven outflow or/and photoionization by a strongly obscured source., Comment: corrected a typo of a coordinate in the last published version; and also updated Fig.2

We present the HST WFC3/F275W UV imaging observations of A2218-Flanking, a lensed compact dwarf galaxy at redshift $z\approx2.5$. The stellar mass of A2218-Flanking is $\log(M/M_{\odot}=9.14$ and SFR is 12.5$M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ after correcting the magnification. This galaxy has a young galaxy age of 127 Myr and a compact galaxy size of $r_{1/2}=2.4$kpc. The HST UV imaging observations cover the rest-frame Lyman continuum (LyC) emission ($\sim800${\AA}) from A2218-Flanking. We firmly detect ($14\sigma$) the LyC emission in A2218-Flanking in the F275W image. Together with the HST F606W images, we find that the absolute escape fraction of LyC is $f_{\rm abs,esc}>28-57\%$ based on the flux density ratio between 1700{\AA} and 800{\AA} ($f_{1700}/f_{800}$). The morphology of the LyC emission in the F275W images is extended and well follows the morphology of the UV continuum morphology in the F606W images, suggesting that the $f_{800}$ is not from foreground contaminants. We find that the region with a high star formation rate surface density has a lower $f_{1700}/f_{800}$ (higher $f_{800}/f_{1700}$) ratio than the diffused regions, suggesting that LyC photons are more likely to escape from the region with the intensive star-forming process. We compare the properties of galaxies with and without LyC detections and find that LyC photons are easier to escape in low mass galaxies.

This is the second paper in a series on a new luminous z ~ 5 quasar survey using optical and near-infrared colors. Here we present a new determination of the bright end of the quasar luminosity function (QLF) at z ~ 5. Combined our 45 new quasars with previously known quasars that satisfy our selections, we construct the largest uniform luminous z ~ 5 quasar sample to date, with 99 quasars in the range 4.7, 14 pages, 12 figures, Accepted by ApJ

We present deep near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 13 luminous Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) () and a lensed LBG candidate, MACS1149-JD1, using the LBT/LUCI spectrograph in the multi-object mode and long-slit mode, respectively. The galaxies are selected in one of the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey/WIDE survey observations, the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Ultra Deep Survey field, and MACS1159-JD1 is selected from the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble survey observations. With ∼4–5 hr integrations, the LBT spectra are sensitive to Lyα emission, with rest-frame equivalent width greater than 55 A ( A) at and 90 A ( A) at . No Lyα emission is observed in any of the LBGs. After correcting the spectroscopic incompleteness, our measurements place an upper limit on the Lyα emission fraction of in luminous LBGs at . This result is consistent with the lack of Lyα emission in LBGs in previous studies. Together with other measurements of the Lyα emission fraction in LBGs at , this study puts a strong constraint on the fraction of luminous LBGs with large EW Lyα, . We estimate the expected Lyα emission fraction at by extrapolating the evolution of the fraction at low redshifts and find that the observed Lyα emission fraction is lower than the expected Lyα emission fraction at the 89% significance level, consistent with expectations if Lyα emission in LBGs has been suppressed by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium or optically thick absorbers around the galaxies. We do not find any strong Lyα emission feature at the redshift range of 7.3–9.7 in the MACSJ1159-JD1 spectrum, either. This is consistent with the conclusion that Lyα emission in the galaxy has been highly suppressed.

We present new near-infrared (IR) observations of the H$\beta\ \lambda4861$ and MgII $\lambda2798$ lines for 32 luminous quasars with $3.2, Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present deep spectroscopic observations of a Lyman-alpha emitter (LAE) candidate at z ~ 7.7 using the infrared spectrograph LUCI on the 2 x 8.4m Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). The candidate is the brightest among the four z ~ 7.7 LAE candidates found in a narrow-band imaging survey by Krug et al. 2012. Our spectroscopic data include a total of 7.5 hours of integration with LBT/LUCI and are deep enough to significantly (3.2-4.9 sigma) detect the Lyman-alpha emission line of this candidate, based on its Lyman-alpha flux 1.2 x 10^{-17} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} estimated from the narrow-band photometry. However, we do not find any convincing signal at the expected position of its Lyman-alpha emission line, suggesting that this source is not an LAE at z ~ 7.7. The non-detection in this work, together with the previous studies of z ~ 7.7 LAEs, puts a strong constraint on the bright-end Lyman-alpha luminosity function (LF) at z ~ 7.7. We find a rapid evolution of the Lyman-alpha LF from z ~ 6.5 to 7.7: the upper limit of the z ~ 7.7 LF is more than 5 times lower than the z ~ 6.5 LF at the bright end (f > 1.0 x 10^{-17} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2}, or L > 6.9 x 10^{42} erg s^{-1}). This is likely caused by an increasing neutral fraction in the IGM that substantially attenuates Lyman-alpha emission at z ~ 7.7.

We present one of the most ultraviolet (UV) luminous Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) (J1432+3358) at z=2.78, discovered in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) Bootes field. The R-band magnitude of J1432+3358 is 22.29 AB, more than two magnitudes brighter than typical L* LBGs at this redshift. The deep z-band image reveals two components of J1432+3358 separated by 1.0" with flux ratio of 3:1. The high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) rest-frame UV spectrum shows Lya emission line and interstellar medium absorption lines. The absence of NV and CIV emission lines, the non-detection in X-ray and radio wavelengths and mid-infrared (MIR) colors indicate no or weak active galactic nuclei (AGN) (

We present spectroscopic observations in the rest-frame optical and near- to mid-infrared wavelengths of four gravitationally lensed infrared (IR) luminous star-forming galaxies at redshift 1 < z < 3 from the LUCIFER instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope and the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer. The sample was selected to represent pure, actively star-forming systems, absent of active galactic nuclei. The large lensing magnifications result in high signal-to-noise spectra that can probe faint IR recombination lines, including Pa-alpha and Br-alpha at high redshifts. The sample was augmented by three lensed galaxies with similar suites of unpublished data and observations from the literature, resulting in the final sample of seven galaxies. We use the IR recombination lines in conjunction with H-alpha observations to probe the extinction, Av, of these systems, as well as testing star formation rate (SFR) indicators against the SFR measured by fitting spectral energy distributions to far-IR photometry. Our galaxies occupy a range of Av from ~0 to 5.9 mag, larger than previously known for a similar range of IR luminosities at these redshifts. Thus, estimates of SFR even at z ~ 2 must take careful count of extinction in the most IR luminous galaxies. We also measure extinction by comparing SFR estimates from optical emission lines with those from far-IR measurements. The comparison of results from these two independent methods indicates a large variety of dust distribution scenarios at 1 < z < 3. Without correcting for dust extinction, the H-alpha SFR indicator underestimates the SFR; the size of the necessary correction depends on the IR luminosity and dust distribution scenario. Individual SFR estimates based on the 6.2 micron PAH emission line luminosity do not show a systematic discrepancy with extinction, although a considerable, ~0.2 dex scatter is observed.

We present the first spectroscopic measurements of the [OIII] 5007 A line in two z ~ 3.1 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) using the new near-infrared instrument LUCIFER1 on the 8.4m Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We also describe the optical imaging and spectroscopic observations used to identify these Lya emitting galaxies. Using the [OIII] line we have measured accurate systemic redshifts for these two galaxies, and discovered a velocity offset between the [OIII] and Ly-alpha lines in both, with the Lya line peaking 342 and 125 km/s redward of the systemic velocity. These velocity offsets imply that there are powerful outflows in high-redshift LAEs. They also ease the transmission of Lya photons through the interstellar medium and intergalactic medium around the galaxies. By measuring these offsets directly, we can refine both Lya-based tests for reionization, and Lya luminosity function measurements where the Lya forest affects the blue wing of the line. Our work also provides the first direct constraints on the strength of the [OIII] line in high-redshift LAEs. We find [OIII] fluxes of 7 and 36 x 10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 in two z ~ 3.1 LAEs. These lines are strong enough to dominate broad-band flux measurements that include the line (in thiscase, K_s band photometry). Spectral energy distribution fits that do not account for the lines would therefore overestimate the 4000 A (and/or Balmer) break strength in such galaxies, and hence also the ages and stellar masses of such high-z galaxies.
