The X-ray signature of L-shell charge exchange in sulfur was studied in the laboratory. A comparison of the charge exchange (CX) spectra with those obtained under electron-impact excitation showed marked differences. In the CX spectra, an enhancement was observed in the transitions from levels with high principal quantum numbers, n = 4, 5, 6 → n = 2 in comparison with the n = 3 → n = 2 transitions that dominate the direct excitation spectra. An even greater enhancement was recorded in the transitions from the levels of electron capture to the ground states: n = 7, 8, 9 → n = 2. The spectra mainly consist of emission from S XIV, but lower charge states such as S XIII, S XII, and S XI also contribute. The results have been compared with observations made by the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray Observatories of Jupiter's polar regions. The enhancement we noticed in transitions from the high-n levels is not seen in the Chandra spectra.

We have used the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's EBIT-I electron beam ion trap to perform measurements of the wavelengths and relative intensities of the X-ray lines from inner-shell satellite transitions in sodium-like Fe XVI. The measurements were carried out with high-resolution crystal and grating spectrometers and covered the 14.5-18 A wavelength band. In contrast to some predicted line strengths and positions found in the literature, our results show that the strongest relatively unblended inner-shell satellites of Fe XVI are located near 15.2 A. This is near the location of the 3d→ 2p intercombination line in Fe XVII. Calculations using the Flexible Atomic Code (FAC) are presented. The average deviation between the EBIT-I measurements and the FAC calculations for the wavelength positions and line ratios are 22 mA and a factor of 2.3, respectively, where the average is taken over the ten features included in this work.

The X-ray signature of charge exchange between highly charged L-shell iron ions and neutral gas atoms was studied in the laboratory in order to assess its diagnostic utility. Significant differences with spectra formed by electron-impact excitation were observed. In particular, a strong enhancement was found of the emission corresponding to -->n ≥ 4→ n = 2 transitions relative to the -->n = 3→ n = 2 emission. This enhancement was detectable even with relatively low-resolution X-ray instrumentation -->(E/Δ E ≈ 10) and may enable future identification of charge exchange as a line-formation mechanism in astrophysical spectra.

The intensity ratios of 3 {yields} 2 emission lines of Fe XVIII and Ni XX were measured on the Livermore electron beam ion trap (EBIT-I) with a flat-field grating spectrometer. The results were compared with distorted-wave (DW) calculations obtained with the Flexible Atomic Code and recent close-coupling calculations using the R-matrix code. The measured 3s {yields} 2p/3d {yields} 2p ratios are about 20-40% higher than the theoretical values. When more extended configuration interaction is included in the DW theory, the agreement with the measurements improved slightly. At the beam energies of these measurements, no significant resonance contribution is expected to be present, and the discrepancies represent the uncertainties in the direct excitation cross sections.

We present accurate wavelength measurements of nickel L-shell X-ray lines resulting from Δn ≥ 1 transitions between 9 and 15 A. We have used the electron beam ion trap, SuperEBIT, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and a flat-field grating spectrometer to record the spectra. The most significant emission lines of Ni XIX-XXVI in our spectral coverage are identified, and their relative intensities are determined. The resulting data set provides valuable input for the analyses of high-resolution X-ray spectra of stellar coronae sources, including the Sun.

We have measured the electron impact excitation cross sections for the strong iron L-shell 3 {yields} 2 lines of Fe XVIII to Fe XXIV at the EBIT-I electron beam ion trap using a crystal spectrometer and NASA-Goddard Space Flight Centers 6 x 6 pixel array microcalorimeter. The cross sections were determined by direct normalization to the well established cross section of radiative electron capture through a sophisticated model analysis which results in the excitation cross section for the strong Fe L-shell lines at multiple electron energies. This measurement is part of a laboratory X-ray astrophysics program utilizing the Livermore electron beam ion traps EBIT-I and EBIT-II.

Electron impact excitation cross sections have been measured for iron L-shell 3 {yields} 2 lines of FeXXI to FeXXIV at the EBIT-II electron beam ion trap using a crystal spectrometer and a 6 x 6-element array microcalorimeter. The cross sections were determined by direct normalization to the well established cross section of radiative electron capture and a summary of calculated energy dependent radiative recombination cross sections for electron capture into the ground state fine structure levels of Fe{sup 16+} to Fe{sup 23+} ions is given. The measurement results for 17 lines and their comparison with model calculations are presented. While agreement of the model calculations with experiment is good for most measured lines, significant discrepancies were found for a few lines, including the strongest line in Fe XXI.

The intensity ratios between 3 → 2 emission lines in Ni XIX were measured on the Livermore electron beam ion trap (EBIT-I) with a flat-field grating spectrometer and the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center X-ray microcalo-rimeter. The results are consistent with earlier measurements of Fe XVII and other Ne-like ions at Livermore and confirm the problems in the atomic modeling of the direct collisional excitation for Ne-like systems.

We report on emission spectra of iron in the extreme ultraviolet recorded at an electron density of ~5 × 1011 cm-3 at the Lawrence Livermore electron beam ion trap EBIT-II. We present a summary of observed emission lines, including wavelengths and emission intensities. We also illustrate our technique for isolating pure charge states of the desired ion and present spectra of pure Fe VII-Fe X. Our measurements add a large number of newly identified lines to existing line lists in the extreme-ultraviolet region, 60-140 A. While many of these lines are quite weak, they add up to a significant flux that can seriously affect interpretations of global fitting models, especially when applied to stars with material at the appropriate temperatures, such as Procyon, α Cen, and the Sun.

The intensity ratios of the 3s → 2p and 3d → 2p lines in Fe XVII were measured on the Livermore electron beam ion trap employing a complementary set of spectrometers, including a high-resolution crystal spectrometer and the Goddard 32 pixel calorimeter. The resulting laboratory data are in agreement with satellite measurements of the Sun and astrophysical sources in collisional equilibrium such as Capella, Procyon, and NGC 4636. The results disagree with earlier laboratory measurements and assertions that processes not accounted for in laboratory measurements must play a role in the formation of the Fe XVII spectra in solar and astrophysical plasmas.

We report measurements of emission cross sections for iron L-shell 3 → 2 lines in Fe23+ performed on the electron beam ion trap EBIT-II using a combination of a crystal spectrometer and the spare 6 × 6 element X-Ray Spectrometer microcalorimeter from the Astro-E X-ray satellite mission. Use of the microcalorimeter enables for first time the normalization of line emission cross sections, i.e., effective electron impact excitation cross sections that include radiative cascades, to the well-established cross section of radiative electron capture, thus allowing the normalization of relative line intensity measurements using crystal spectrometers.

Using the electron beam ion trap EBIT-II facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we have measured the iron L-shell spectrum between 10.5 and 12.5 A for Fe XXI-XXIV with a spectral resolution of ~30 mA. The relative line intensities of strong 3 → 2 transitions for each charge state are measured as functions of electron energy and compared to distorted wave (DW) calculations. The contributions of resonant processes, namely, resonant excitation (RE) and spectroscopically unresolved dielectronic recombination (DR) satellites, are investigated. The RE contributions are shown to be less than the experimental and theoretical uncertainties for plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium. The unresolved DR satellites, however, enhance the emissivities of almost all lines, some by as large as 15%, consistent with our earlier measurements for Fe XXIV. The DW results agree with our measurements to better than 20% under the condition of collisional ionization equilibrium. The line emissivities in the widely used spectral synthesis model, MEKAL, are also compared to our measurements and are found to be discrepant at a greater than 20% level for some lines.

The relative intensity R of the resonance and intercombination line in neon-like Fe XVII, located at 15.01 and 15.26 A, respectively, has been measured at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory electron beam ion trap EBIT-II as a function of the relative abundance of sodium-like Fe XVI. Our measurements identify several Fe XVI lines and one Fe XV line in this region. We show that an Fe XVI inner shell satellite line coincides with the intercombination line and can significantly reduce the apparent R. We measure R = 1.90 ± 0.11 when the relative abundance of Fe XVI to Fe XVII is ~1. This explains the anomalously low ratios observed in the solar and stellar coronae. The fact that the apparent relative intensity of the resonance and intercombination line in Fe XVII is sensitive to the strength of an Fe XVI inner shell satellite, and therefore, the relative abundance of Fe XVI to Fe XVII, makes the line ratio a diagnostic of temperature.

Laboratory measurements of the interaction of low-energy, bare, and hydrogen-like ions with neutral gases are presented. The measurements demonstrate that charge-exchange-induced cometary K-shell X-ray spectra represent rich spectral diagnostics for determining the speed of the solar wind and the collision dynamics within the coma. We show that the K-shell spectrum observed from low-energy ion-neutral collisions (≤ 50 km s-1) has a distinct high-energy component that is suppressed in high-energy collisions (≥800 km s-1). As a result, the hardness ratio of the K-shell spectrum increases by as much as a factor of 4 as the ions decelerate in the coma. The change in spectral shape can be observed even with low-resolution energy dispersive solid-state detectors, opening the possibility of spatial imaging of the solar wind heavy-ion velocity profile in the coma. Our results clearly show that energy-dependent data are needed to fully describe charge-exchange-induced X-ray production in the heliosphere.

Transition probabilities of three magnetic dipole (M1) transitions in multiply charged ions of Ar have been measured using the Livermore electron-beam ion trap. Two of the transitions are in the ground con—gurations of Ar XIV (B-like) and Ar IX (F-like), and are associated with the coronal lines at 4412.4 and 5533.4 respectively. The third is in the excited 2s2p con—guration of Be-like Ar XV and produces Ae , the coronal line at 5943.73 Our results for the three atomic level lifetimes are 9.32 ^ 0.12 ms for the Ae . Ar X 2s22p5 level, 9.70 ^ 0.15 ms for the Ar XIV 2s22p level, and 15.0 ^ 0.8 ms for the Ar XV 2P 1@2 2P 3@2 2s2p level. The identification of the emission line feature at 17.62 Angstroms in solar x-ray spectra is re-examined. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we compute a realistic theoretical upper limit to the observed Fe L-alpha photospheric fluorescent line strength caused by irradiation from an overlying corona. These calculations demonstrate that the photospheric Fe L-alpha characteristic line is much too weak to account for the observed 17.62 Angstrom line flux. Instead, we identify this line with the configuration interaction 2s2p3p2P-2s2p6 2S transition in Fe XVIII seen in Electron Beam Ion Trap spectra and predicted in earlier theoretical work on the Fe XVIII x-ray spectrum.

The line emission of Fe VII-Fe X ions in the extreme-ultraviolet region below 140 A was measured in controlled laboratory experiments under conditions representative of stellar coronae. The observations are compared with predictions from standard spectral models using the CHIANTI and MEKAL atomic databases. We find that the atomic databases miss most of the line flux in this region. While some of the missing lines form isolated features, most add up to form a quasi continuum in the 60-120 A region. This incompleteness can explain the poor fit when applying global-fitting techniques to spectra from cool stars measured by the Extreme-Ultraviolet Explorer satellite, the origin of which has been a source of controversy since the original observations were made.

Using the Electron Beam Ion Trap facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we have measured relative cross sections for Fe XXIV line emission at electron energies between 0.7 and 3.0 keV. The measurements include line formation by direct electron impact excitation (DE), radiative cascades, resonant excitation (RE), and dielectronic recombination (DR) satellites with captured electrons in n " 5 levels. Good agreement with R-matrix and distorted wave calculations is found. In collisionally ionized plasmas, at temperatures near where the ion abundance peaks keV), the RE contributions are (kT e D 1.7 found to be of the line emission, while the DR satellites contribute While good agreement (5% (10%. with state-of-the-art atomic physics calculations is found, there is less good agreement with existing spectral synthesis codes in common astrophysical use. For the Fe XXIV and 3p 3@2 ) 2s 1@2 ,3 p 1@2 ) 2s 1@2 , transitions, the synthesis code MEKAL underestimates the emissivity in coronal equi- 3d 5@2 ) 2p 3@2 librium by D20% at temperatures near where the ion abundance peaks. In situations where the ioniza- tion balance is not solely determined by the electron temperature, RE and DR satellites may contribute a considerable fraction of the line emission. Detailed measurements, line identifications, and modeling calculations of the Fe XVII L-shell emission spectrum between 9.8 and 17.5 A are presented. The measurements were carried out on an electron beam ion trap under precisely controlled conditions where electron-impact excitation followed by radiative cascades is the dominant line formation process. In addition to the strong transitions emanating from the n = 3 shell, we identify and accurately determine wavelengths for transitions from higher shells up to n = 11, including two electric quadrupole transitions that have not been previously identified. Various theoretical values, including new distorted wave calculations, are compared to our measurements, which establish definitive values for testing spectral modeling predictions. We find a value of 3.04 ± 0.12 for the ratio of the intensity of the 2p-3d1P1 resonance and of the 2p-3d3D1 intercombination line situated at 15.01 and 15.26 A, respectively. This value is higher than the values observed in solar spectra, which supports claims that the solar value is affected by resonant scattering. However, because our value is significantly lower than calculated values, the amount of scattering has probably been overestimated in past analyses. Comparisons of the measured intensity ratios of the transitions originating in levels of higher principal quantum number n with present distorted wave calculations show good agreement up to n = 6. The combined flux of all 2p-nd transitions with n ≥ 5 and all 2s-np transitions with n = 4 and 5 relative to the flux of the 15.01 A resonance line has been measured to be 0.13+ 0.04−0.03 .
