The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) survey of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is providing an unprecedented view of local AGNs ( = 0.03) and their host galaxy properties. In this paper, we present an analysis of the optical spectra of a sample of 64 AGNs from the 9-month survey, detected solely based on their 14-195 keV flux. Our analysis includes both archived spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and our own observations from the 2.1-m Kitt Peak National Observatory telescope. Among our results, we include line ratio classifications utilizing standard emission line diagnostic plots, [O III] 5007 A luminosities, and H-beta derived black hole masses. As in our X-ray study, we find the type 2 sources to be less luminous (in [O III] 5007 A and 14-195 keV luminosities) with lower accretion rates than the type 1 sources. We find that the optically classified LINERs, H II/composite galaxies, and ambiguous sources have the lowest luminosities, while both broad line and narrow line Seyferts have similar luminosities. From a comparison of the hard X-ray (14-195 keV) and [O III] luminosities, we find that both the observed and extinction-corrected [O III] luminosities are weakly correlated with X-ray luminosity. In a study of the host galaxy properties from both continuum fits and measurements of the stellar absorption indices, we find that the hosts of the narrow line sources have properties consistent with late type galaxies.

We present a study of the radial velocity offsets between narrow emission lines and host galaxy lines (stellar absorption and H I 21-cm emission) in Seyfert galaxies with observed redshifts less than 0.043. We find that 35% of the Seyferts in the sample show [O III] emission lines with blueshifts with respect to their host galaxies exceeding 50 km/s, whereas only 6% show redshifts this large, in qualitative agreement with most previous studies. We also find that a greater percentage of Seyfert 1 galaxies show blueshifts than Seyfert 2 galaxies. Using HST/STIS spatially-resolved spectra of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 and the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151, we generate geometric models of their narrow-line regions (NLRs) and inner galactic disks, and show how these models can explain the blueshifted [O III] emission lines in collapsed STIS spectra of these two Seyferts. We conclude that the combination of mass outflow of ionized gas in the NLR and extinction by dust in the inner disk (primarily in the form of dust spirals) is primarily responsible for the velocity offsets in Seyfert galaxies. More exotic explanations are not needed. The fraction of Compton-thick sources is one of the main uncertainties left in understanding the active galactic nucleus (AGN) population. The Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) all-sky survey for the first time gives us an unbiased sample of AGNs for all but the most heavily absorbed sources N H > 1025 cm–2). Still, the BAT spectra (14-195 keV) are time averaged over months of observations and therefore hard to compare with softer spectra from the Swift XRT or other missions. This makes it difficult to distinguish between Compton-thin and Compton-thick models. With Suzaku, we have obtained simultaneous hard (>15 keV) and soft (0.3-10 keV) X-ray spectra for five Compton-thick candidate sources. We report on the spectra and a comparison with the BAT and earlier XMM observations. Based on both flux variability and spectral shape, we conclude that these hidden sources are not Compton thick. We also report on a possible correlation between excess variance and Swift BAT luminosity from the 16 day binned light curves, which holds true for a sample of both absorbed (four sources), unabsorbed (eight sources), and Compton-thick (Circinus) AGNs, but is weak in the 64 day binned BAT light curves.

We report on Suzaku observations of four unidentified sources from the INTEGRAL and Swift BAT Galactic plane surveys. All the sources have a large neutral hydrogen column density and are likely members of an emerging class of heavily absorbed high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) first identified in INTEGRAL observations. Two of the sources in our sample are approximately constant flux sources, one source shows periodic variation and one source exhibited a short, bright X-ray outburst. The periodicity is transient, suggesting it is produced by a neutron star in an elliptical orbit around a stellar wind source. We analyze the flaring source in several segments to look for spectral variation and discuss the implications of the findings for the nature of the source. We conclude that all four sources in our sample can be identified with the emerging class of highly absorbed HMXBs, that one is a newly identified transient X-ray pulsar and that at least one is a newly identified supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT)., 22 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

We use 3 years of data from the Swift/BAT survey to select a complete sample of X-ray blazars above 15 keV. This sample comprises 26 Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) and 12 BL Lac objects detected over a redshift range of 0.03, Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 59 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables

We present a systematic spectral analysis with Suzaku of six active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected in the Swift/BAT hard X-ray (15-200 keV) survey: Swift J0138.6–4001, J0255.2–0011, J0350.1–5019, J0505.7–2348, J0601.9–8636, and J1628.1–5145. This is considered to be a representative sample of new AGNs without X-ray spectral information before the BAT survey. We find that the 0.5-200 keV spectra of these sources can be uniformly fitted with a base model consisting of heavily absorbed (log N H > 23.5 cm–2) transmitted components, scattered lights, a reflection component, and an iron-K emission line. There are two distinct groups: three "new-type" AGNs (including the two sources reported by Ueda et al.) with an extremely small scattered fraction (f scat 0.5% and R 0.8. The spectral parameters suggest that the new type has an optically thick torus for Thomson scattering (N H ~ 1025 cm–2) with a small opening angle θ ~ 20° viewed in a rather face-on geometry, while the classical type has a thin torus (N H ~ 1023-24 cm–2) with θ 30°. We infer that a significant number of new-type AGNs with an edge-on view are missing in the current all-sky hard X-ray surveys.

The SWIFT gamma ray observatory's Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) has detected a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) based solely on their hard X-ray flux (14-195 keV). In this paper, we present for the first time {\it XMM-Newton} X-ray spectra for 22 BAT AGNs with no previously analyzed X-ray spectra. If our sources are a representative sample of the BAT AGN, as we claim, our results present for the first time global X-ray properties of an unbiased towards absorption (n$_H = 0.03$), AGN sample. We find 9/22 low absorption (n$_H 2.0$ keV. Five of the complex sources are classified as Compton-thick candidates. Further, we find four more sources with properties consistent with the hidden/buried AGN reported by Ueda {\it et al.} (2007). Finally, we include a comparison of the {\it XMM-Newton} EPIC spectra with available SWIFT X-ray Telescope (XRT) observations. From these comparisons, we find 6/16 sources with varying column densities, 6/16 sources with varying power law indices, and 13/16 sources with varying fluxes, over periods of hours to months. Flux and power law index are correlated for objects where both parameters vary.

(abridged) In this paper, we examined XMM Newton EPIC spectra of 14 ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs)in addition to the XMM RGS spectra of two sources (Holmberg II X-1 and Holmberg IX X-1). We determined oxygen and iron abundances of the host galaxy's interstellar medium (ISM) using K-shell (O) and L-shell (Fe) X-ray photo-ionization edges towards these ULXs. We found that the oxygen abundances closely matched recent solar abundances for all of our sources, implying that ULXs live in similar local environments despite the wide range of galaxy host properties. Also, we compare the X-ray hydrogen column densities (n_H) for 8 ULX sources with column densities obtained from radio H I observations. The X-ray model n_H values are in good agreement with the H I n_H values, implying that the hydrogen absorption towards the ULXs is not local to the source (with the exception of the source M81 XMM1). In order to obtain the column density and abundance values, we fit the X-ray spectra of the ULXs with a combined power law and one of several accretion disk models. We tested the abundances obtained from the XSPEC models bbody, diskbb, grad, and diskpn along with a power law, finding that the abundances were independent of the thermal model used. We comment on the physical implications of these different model fits. We also note that very deep observations allow a breaking of the degeneracy noted by Stobbart et al. (2006) favoring a high mass solution for the absorbed grad + power law model.

We have conducted an archival XMM-Newton study of the bright X-ray point sources in 32 nearby galaxies. From our list of approximately 100 point sources, we attempt to determine if there is a low-state counterpart to the Ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) population. Indeed, 16 sources in our sample match the criteria we set for a low-state ULX, namely, L(sub X) greater than 10(exp 38 ergs per second) and a spectrum best fit with an absorbed power law. Further, we find evidence for 26 high-state ULXs which are best fit by a combined blackbody and a power law. As in Galactic black hole systems, the spectral indices, GAMMA, of the low-state objects, as well a s the luminosities, tend to be lower than those of the high-state objects. The observed range of blackbody temperatures is 0.1-1 keV with the most luminous systems tending toward the lowest temperatures. We also find a class of object whose properties (luminosity, blackbody temperature, and power law slopes) are very similar to those of galactic stellar mass black holes. In addition, we find a subset of these objects that can be best fit by a Comptonized spectrum similar to that used for Galactic black holes in the very high state, when they are radiating near the Eddington limit.

We present the spatial correlation function analysis of non-stellar X-ray point sources in the Chandra Large Area Synoptic X-ray Survey of Lockman Hole Northwest (CLASXS). Our 9 ACIS-I fields cover a contiguous solid angle of 0.4 deg^2 and reach a depth of 3x10^-15 c.g.s in the 2-8 keV band. We supplement our analysis with data from the Chandra Deep Field North (CDFN). The addition of this field allows better probe of the correlation function at small scales. A total of 233 and 252 sources with spectroscopic information are used in the study of the CLASXS and CDFN fields respectively. We calculate both redshift-space and projected correlation functions in comoving coordinates, averaged over the redshift range of 0.1, Comment: ApJ accepted. A missing hubble constant h has been noticed in one of the equations and hence corrected. Tables, figures affected are changed. The results and conclusions however are not significantly affected

We present measurements of the oxygen abundance of the Milky Way's ISM by observing the K-shell X-ray photoionization edge towards galaxy clusters. This effect is most easily observed towards objects with galactic columns (n_H) of a few times 1e21 cm^-2. We measure X-ray column densities towards 11 clusters and find that at high galactic columns above approximately 1e21 cm^-2 the X-ray columns are generally 1.5--3.0 times greater than the 21 cm H II columns, indicating that molecular clouds become an important contributor to n_H at higher columns. We find the average ISM oxygen abundance to be (O/H) = (4.85 +/- 0.06) x 10^-4, or 0.99 solar when using the most recent solar photospheric values. Since X-ray observations are sensitive to the total amount of oxygen present (gas + dust), these results indicate a high gas to dust ratio. Also, the oxygen abundances along lines of sight through high galactic columns (n_H) are the same as abundances through low columns, suggesting that the composition of denser clouds is similar to that of the more diffuse ISM., Comment: submitted to ApJ

We report the detection of radio emission coincident with the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in Holmberg II. The radio emission is diffuse and resolved, covering an area ~60 by 40 pc in extent and well-matched to the recently discovered HeII nebula surrounding the X-ray source. Comparison of the radio and optical properties of this extended radio emission argue against its association with either an HII region or supernova remnant. This is additional evidence that this ULX is not powered by a stellar-mass object whose emission is relativistically beamed towards the observer, and thus is either a super-Eddington source or intermediate mass black hole as suggested by optical observations. Implications of this result to future and existing radio studies of ULXs are discussed.

We have identified the optical counterpart of the Ultra-Luminous X-ray source Ml0l ULX-1 (CX- OKM101 J140332.74+542102), by comparing HST ACS images with Chandra ACIS-S images. The optical counterpart has V= 23.75 and colours consistent with those for a mid-B supergiant. Archival WFPC2 observations show that the source brightness is constant to within approximately 0.1 mag. The physical association of this source with the ULX is confirmed by Gemini GMOS spectroscopic observations which show spatially unresolved He II lambda4686 and He I lambda5876 emission. These results suggest that M10l ULX-1 is a HMXB but deep spectroscopic monitoring observations are needed to determine the detailed properties of this system.

We present the results from a ~53 ksec XMM observation of NGC 2276. This galaxy has an unusual optical morphology with the disk of this spiral appearing to be truncated along the western edge. This XMM observation shows that the X-ray source at the western edge is a bright Intermediate X-ray Object (IXO). Its spectrum is well fit by a multi-color disk blackbody model used to fit optically thick standard accretion disks around black holes. The luminosity derived for this IXO is 1.1x10^41 erg/s in the 0.5 - 10 keV band making it one of the most luminous discovered to date. The large source luminosity implies a large mass black hole if the source is radiating at the Eddington rate. On the other hand, the inner disk temperature determined here is too high for such a massive object given the standard accretion disk model. In addition to the IXO we find that the nuclear source in this galaxy has dimmed by at least a factor of several thousand in the eight years since the ROSAT HRI observations.

We present RGS data from an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, taken while the continuum source was in an extreme low state. The spectrum shows numerous emission lines including the H-like lines of C, N and O and the He-like lines of N, O and Ne. These data show that the N lines are far stronger than would be expected from gas of solar abundances. Based on our photoionization models, we find that N is overabundant compared to C, O and Ne by at least a factor of 2.5. We suggest this is the result of secondary production of N in intermediate mass stars, and indicative of the history of star formation in NGC 3516., 19 pages, 3 color figures. ApJ in press

We present the first results from an XMM-Newton observation of the Fanaroff-Riley type I galaxy NGC 4261, which harbors a supermassive black hole and a low-ionization nuclear emission-line region. Here we focus on the X-ray properties of the nucleus, using the European Photon Imaging Camera pn data. The 0.6-10 keV continuum in best fitted by a thermal component with kT ~ 0.7 keV, plus a power law with photon index Γ ~ 1.4, absorbed by a column density NH ~ 4 × 1022 cm-2. An unresolved Fe K emission line with EW ~ 280 eV is detected at ~7 keV. We also detect, for the first time, short-term flux variability from the nucleus, on a timescale of 3-5 ks. The short-term variations rule out an advection-dominated accretion flow as the only production mechanism of the X-ray continuum. Instead, we argue that the inner jet contributes to the emission in the X-ray band.

We report the discovery with the EPIC CCD cameras onboard XMM-Newton of a 54 mHz quasiperiodic oscillation (QPO) in the > 2 keV X-ray flux from an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in the starburst galaxy M82. This is the first detection of a QPO in the X-ray flux from an extra-Galactic ULX, and confirms that the source is a compact object. Based on the QPO strength and previous Chandra observations it appears likely that the QPO is associated with the most luminous object in the central region of M82, CXOM82 J095550.2+694047, however, XMM imaging alone is not sufficient to unambiguously confirm this. The other plausible candidate is CXOM82 J095551.1+694045, however, the QPO luminosity is comparable to the peak luminosity of this object in Chandra observations, which argues against it being the source of the QPO. The QPO had a centroid frequency of 54.3 +- 0.9 mHz, a coherence of 5, and an amplitude (rms) in the 2 - 10 keV band of 8.5%. Below 0.2 Hz the power spectrum can be described by a power-law with index ~1, and amplitude (rms) of 13.5%. The X-ray spectrum requires a curving continuum, with a disk-blackbody (diskbb) at T = 3.1 keV providing an acceptable fit. A broad Fe line centered at 6.55 keV is required in all fits, but the equivalent width (EW) is sensitive to the continuum model. There is no evidence of a reflection component. The implied bolometric luminosity is 4 - 5 x 10^{40} ergs/sec. Archival Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) pointings at M82 also show evidence for QPOs in the 50 - 100 mHz frequency range. We discuss the implications of our findings for models of ULXs.

We present observations of the intrinsic absorption in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). We have combined 18 STIS and five FUSE observations to obtain a high signal-to-noise ratio averaged spectrum spanning 905-1730 A. The averaged spectrum reveals absorption in O VI, N V, C IV, N III, C III, and the Lyman lines up to Ly in the three blueshifted kinematic components previously detected in the STIS spectrum (at radial velocities of -1320, -724, and -548 km s-1). The highest velocity component exhibits absorption in Si IV. We also detect metastable C III in this component, indicating a high density in this absorber. No lower ionization lines, i.e., C II and Si II, are detected. A weak, fourth absorption component is tentatively detected in the high-ionization lines and Lyα and Lyβ at a radial velocity of -1027 km s-1. The Lyman lines reveal a complex absorption geometry. The strength of the higher order lines indicates that Lyα and Lyβ are saturated over much of the resolved profiles in the three strongest absorption components and that, therefore, their observed profiles are determined by the covering factor. We separate the individual covering factors of the continuum and emission-line sources as a function of velocity in each kinematic component using the Lyα and Lyβ lines. The covering factor of the broad-line region is found to vary dramatically between the cores of the individual kinematic components, ranging from 0 to 0.84. In addition, we find that the continuum covering factor varies with velocity within the individual kinematic components, decreasing smoothly in the wings of the absorption by at least 60%. Comparison of the effective covering factors derived from the H I results with those determined directly from the doublets reveals that the covering factor of Si IV is less than half that of H I and N V in the high-velocity component. In addition, the FWHMs of N III and Si IV are narrower than those of the higher ionization lines in this component. These results indicate there is substructure within this absorber. We also find evidence for structure in the column density profiles of the high-ionization lines in this component. We derive a lower limit on the total column (NH ≥ 1019 cm-2) and ionization parameter (U ≥ 0.005) in the low-ionization subcomponent of this absorber. The metastable-to-total C III column density ratio implies ne ≈ 109 cm-3 and an upper limit on the distance of the absorber from the ionizing continuum of R ≤ 8 × 1017 cm. The decreasing covering factor found in the wings of the absorption and the extreme compactness of the C III* absorber are suggestive of a clumpy absorption gas with a low volume filling factor.

A high spectral resolution observation of the diffuse X-ray background in the 60 - 1000 eV energy range has been made using an array of thirty-six 1 mm^2 micro-calorimeters flown on a sounding rocket. Detector energy resolution ranged from 5-12 eV FWHM, and a composite spectrum of ~ 1 steradian of the background centered at l = 90, b = +60 was obtained with a net resolution of ~ 9 eV. The target area includes bright 1/4 keV regions, but avoids Loop I and the North Polar Spur. Lines of C VI, O VII, and O VIII are clearly detected with intensities of 5.4 +/- 2.3, 4.8 +/- 0.8, and 1.6 +/- 0.4 photons cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1, respectively. The oxygen lines alone account for a majority of the diffuse background observed in the ROSAT R4 band that is not due to resolved extragalactic discrete sources. We also have a positive detection of the Fe-M line complex near 70 eV at an intensity consistent with previous upper limits that indicate substantial gas phase depletion of iron. We present the first high-resolution, X-ray image of the circumnuclear regions of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516, using the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). All three of the CXO observations reported were performed with one of the two grating assemblies in place, and here we restrict our analysis to undispersed photons (i.e. those detected in the zeroth-order). A previously-unknown X-ray source is detected approx 6 arcsec (1.1 h_{75}^{-1} kpc) NNE of the nucleus (position angle approx 29 degrees) which we designate CXOU 110648.1+723412. Its spectrum can be characterized as a power law with a photon index Gamma ~ 1.8--2.6, or as thermal emission with a temperature kT~0.7--3 keV. Assuming a location within NGC 3516, isotropic emission implies a luminosity L ~ 2--8e39 h_{75}^{-2} erg s^{-1} in the 0.4--2 keV band. If due to a single point source, the object is super-Eddington for a 1.4 M_sun neutron star. However, multiple sources or a small, extended source cannot be excluded using the current data. Large-scale extended X-ray emission is also detected out to ~10 arcsec (~1.7 h_{75}^{-1} kpc) from the nucleus to the NE and SW, and is approximately aligned with the morphologies of the radio emission and extended narrow emission line region (ENLR). The mean luminosity of this emission is 1--5e37 h_{75}^{-2} erg s^{-1} arcsec^{-2}, in the 0.4--2 keV band. Unfortunately the current data cannot usefully constrain its spectrum. These results are consistent with earlier suggestions of circumnuclear X-ray emission in NGC 3516. If the extended emission is due to scattering of the nuclear X-ray continuum, then the pressure in the X-ray emitting gas is at least two orders of magnitude too small to provide the confining medium for the ENLR clouds., Accepted for publication in ApJ, 8 pages including 3 colour figs

Elliptical galaxy nuclei are the sites of the largest black holes known, but typically show little or no nuclear activity. We investigate this extreme quiescence using Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636. The unique Chandra imaging power enables us to place upper limits of 7.3, 15 and 28 X 10^-9 the Eddington luminosity for the 0.1-1 billion solar mass black holes in NGC 1399, NGC 4472, and NGC 4636, respectively. The corresponding radiative efficiencies in this band are 4.1, 24, and 620 X 10^-6 using Bondi accretion rates derived from the Chandra hot interstellar gas surface brightness profiles. These limits are inconsistent with basic advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) models for NGC 1399 and NGC 4472, indicating accretion onto the black hole at 10% of the Bondi rate., Comment: 12 pages including two embedded figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Observations with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), the Advanced Satellite for Astrophysics and Cosmology, and ROSAT have been used to search for X-ray emission produced by the inverse Compton process in the Abell 1367 galaxy cluster. The three data sets provide a high-quality spectrum which extends from 0.4 to 20 keV, allowing accurate separation of thermal and nonthermal components. In the cases of both the cluster's radio halo relic and radio galaxy 3C 264, the detection of nonthermal emission is model dependent. Nonthermal emission from the relic is detected using the RXTE Proportional Counter Array with a flux of ~0.010-0.019 photons cm-2 keV-1 s-1 at 1 keV, when the thermal emission is modeled with a single thermal component. However, modeling the thermal emission with two thermal components provides a better fit to the data and obviates the need for a nonthermal power-law component. We also find that thermal emission is a physically plausible origin for the second component. Using two thermal components to model the spectrum gives an upper limit of 3.3 × 10-3 photons cm-2 keV-1 s-1 on nonthermal X-ray emission from the radio relic region. We derive an average intracluster magnetic field of ≥0.84 μG for this region. This value is consistent with the radial field derived from Faraday rotation studies of noncooling flow clusters. For the central region of the intracluster medium, we find an upper limit of 1.08 × 10-3 photons cm-2 keV-1 s-1 at 1 keV for nonthermal emission. Joint fitting of the data sets gives a detection of nonthermal emission for 3C 264 of 1.21 × 10-4 to 2.45 × 10-4 photons cm-2 keV-1 s-1 at 1 keV, using a single thermal component. However, as with the radio relic region, two thermal components provide a much better fit to the spectrum and give an upper limit of less than 5.3 × 10-5 photons cm-2 keV-1 s-1 at 1 keV. Combining the X-ray upper limit with the radio spectrum gives an average magnetic field greater than 0.41 μG.

We present ASCA observations of LINERs without broad H$\alpha$ emission in their optical spectra. The sample of "type 2" LINERs consists of NGC 404, 4111, 4192, 4457, and 4569. We have detected X-ray emission from all the objects except for NGC 404; among the detected objects are two so-called transition objects (NGC 4192 and NGC 4569), which have been postulated to be composite nuclei having both an HII region and a LINER component. The images of NGC 4111 and NGC 4569 in the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-7 keV) X-ray bands are extended on scales of several kpc. The X-ray spectra of NGC 4111, NGC 4457 and NGC 4569 are well fitted by a two-component model that consists of soft thermal emission with $kT\sim0.65$ keV and a hard component represented by a power law (photon index $\sim$ 2) or by thermal bremsstrahlung emission ($kT\sim$ several keV). The extended hard X-rays probably come from discrete sources, while the soft emission most likely originates from hot gas produced by active star formation in the host galaxy. We have found no clear evidence for the presence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the sample. If an AGN component is the primary ionization source of the optical emission lines, then it must be heavily obscured with a column density significantly larger than $10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. We present a uniform and systematic analysis of the 0.6-10 keV X-ray spectra of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) observed by ASCA. The sample 10 BLRGs, 5 QSRs, 9 NLRGs, and 10 RGs. At soft X-rays, about half of the NLRGs and all of the RGs exhibit a thermal plasma component, with a bimodal distribution of temperatures and luminosities, suggesting an origin either in a surrounding cluster or loose group or in a hot corona. At energies above 2 keV, a hard power-law component is detected in 90% of cases. The power-law photon indices and luminosities in BLRGs, QSRs, and NLRGs are similar, consistent with orientation-based unification schemes. Significant excess cold absorption is detected in most NLRGs, but also in some BLRGS and QSRs, which was somewhat unexpected. In contrast to Seyfert galaxies, only one object showss the signature of a warm absorber. The nuclear X-ray luminosity is correlated with the luminosity of the [O III] emission line, the FIR emission at 12 microns, and the lobe radio power at 5 GHz. The Fe K line is detected in 50% of BLRGs, one QSR, and a handful of NLRGs. This sample also includes 6 Weak Line Radio Galaxies (WLRGs). Their spectra WLRGs can be generally decomposed into a soft thermal component with hard absrorbed power-law component, which is significantly flatter than any other radio-loud AGNs. Their intrinsic luminosities are two orders of magnitude lower than in other sources of the sample. An interesting possibility is that WLRGs represent an extreme population of radio galaxies in which the central black hole is accreting at a rate well below the Eddington rate.

Abell 754, a cluster undergoing merging, was observed in hard X-rays with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) in order to constrain its hottest temperature component and search for evidence of nonthermal emission. Simultaneous modeling of RXTE data and those taken with previous missions yields an average intracluster temperature of ~9 keV in the 1-50 keV energy band. A multitemperature component model derived from numerical simulations of the evolution of a cluster undergoing a merger produces similar quality of fit, indicating that the emission measure from the very hot gas component is sufficiently small that it renders the two models indistinguishable. No significant nonthermal emission was detected. However, our observations set an upper limit of 7.1×10−14 ergs cm−2 s−1 keV−1 (90% confidence limit) to the nonthermal emission flux at 20 keV. Combining this result with the radio synchrotron emission flux, we find a lower limit of 0.2 μG for the intracluster magnetic field. We discuss the implications of our results for the theories of magnetic field amplifications in cluster mergers.

We have analyzed the ASCA SIS and GIS data for seventeen groups and determined the average temperature and abundance of the hot x-ray emitting gas. For groups with gas temperatures less than 1.5 keV we find that the abundance is correlated with the gas temperature and luminosity. We have also determined the abundance of the alpha-elements and iron independently for those groups with sufficient counts. (Abridged) We present the results from {\it ASCA} observations of NGC 3227 along with those from a {\it ROSAT} observation. The 0.6--10 keV continuum is consistent with a powerlaw with $\Gamma \sim 1.6$, flatter than that typically observed in Seyfert galaxies. Fe $K$-shell emission is observed with an EW and profile typical of Seyfert 1 galaxies. The {\it ASCA} observations in 1993 reveal absorption by a screen $N_{H,z}^{ion} \simeq 3\times10^{21} cm^{-2}}$ of ionized material with $U_X \simeq 0.01$. Joint analysis of the {\it ASCA} and {\it ROSAT} data show an additional screen of neutral material instrinsic to NGC 3227 with $N_{H,z}^{neu} \sim $few$\times10^{20} cm^{-2}}$. NGC 3227 exhibits spectral variability both within and between the observations, due to short-term variability in the continuum emission and longer-term variability in the absorption. Time-resolved spectroscopy show the continuum steepened by $\Delta \Gamma \simeq 0.1$ during a flare of duration $\sim 10^4$s. The column increased by a factor of $\sim10$ by the 1995 epoch, while the continuum is consistent with that observed in 1993. The 1995 data also show evidence that the warm absorber allows $\sim$10% of the nuclear emission to escape without attenuation., Comment: Accepted for publn in ApJ. We present the results from ASCA observations of NGC 3783 carried out during 1993 and 1996. Variability is observed both between the two epochs and within the individual observations, the latter due to a non-stationary process. We find the spectra at both epochs to contain features due to absorption by ionized material, predominantly due to Ovii and Oviii. We find the opacity for such material to decrease by a factor approx 2 in the approx 0.7--1.0 keV band between the epochs while the photoionizing flux increases by approx25%. By comparison with detailed photoionization models we show this behaviour is inconsistent with that expected from a single-zone of photoionized gas. A deficit in the data compared to such models, consistent with excess absorption by Oviii, supports the suggestion that the material consists of two or more zones. Significant Fe K-shell emission is also observed during both epochs. We show this emission is dominated by the asymmetric line profile expected from the innermost regions of the accretion flow. We find no evidence that the Fe emission varied in either shape or equivalent width between the two epochs., Accepted for publication in ApJ. We report on a high signal-to-noise ASCA spectrum of the nearby (z = 0.069) BL Lacertae object PKS 0548-322, obtained during the performance verification phase of the instrument. Our principal result is the detection of discrete absorption at ~0.6 keV. The ASCA flux of the source, F2-10 keV ~ 2.8 × 10-11 ergs cm-2 s-1, corresponds to an average intensity state with respect to previous X-ray observations. The ASCA spectrum is well fitted by a convex broken power law plus Galactic column density plus an absorption feature, modeled with either an edge at an observed energy E ~ 0.66 keV and with optical depth τ ~ 0.3 or with a line (notch) at an observed energy E ~ 0.82 keV, width ΔE = 0.1 keV (fixed), and covering fraction fc ~ 0.1. The feature is at energies higher than in previous observations, when PKS 0548-322 was slightly brighter. The observed properties of the feature are consistent with absorption by ionized gas with column density N${r gas}{r H}$ --> ≈ 10 -->21 cm-2 and a low ionization parameter (Ux ≈ 0.007), strengthening the conclusion that ionized circumnuclear gas is common in BL Lacs. A very subtle curvature is measured for the underlying ASCA continuum, with steepening ΔΓ ~ 0.2 above 1.7 keV. However, there is no need for a curved continuum once a detailed photoionization model is fitted to the ASCA data. There is no significant contribution to the 0.6-10 keV ASCA data of PKS 0548-322 by the associated optical cluster of galaxies; the upper limit to the intergalactic gas luminosity is L${r IGM}_{2{–}10 {r keV}}$ -->~ 4 × 1043 ergs s-1, about 15% of the BL Lac luminosity.

We have obtained the first large sample of accurate temperatures for clusters at z>0.14 from ASCA. We compare the luminosity temperature (L-T) distribution for these clusters with the low redshift sample of David et al (1993) and find that there is no evidence for evolution. We also find that the intrinsic variance in this relation is roughly constant with redshift. Additionally, there is no detectable change in the relationship of optical velocity dispersion to X-ray temperature with redshift. Most cosmological simulations driven primarily by gravity predict substantial changes in the L-T relation due to the recent rapid growth of clusters. Our results are consistent either with models in which the cluster core entropy is dominated by pre-heating, or with low Omega models in which cluster structure does not evolve strongly with time. The intrinsic variance in the L-T relation at a fixed redshift can be due a variety of possibilites e.g. a change in the baryonic fraction from cluster to cluster, variation in the fraction of the total energy in the system arising from shocks or supernova heating or variations in the emission measure distributions in multiphase gas.

We present the first in a series of papers describing the X-ray properties of a sample of 18 Seyfert 1 galaxies, using data obtained by ASCA. The imaging data reveal a number of serendipitous hard X-ray sources in some source fields, but none contribute significantly to the hard X-ray flux of the active galactic nuclei. All but one of the Seyferts show evidence for variability on timescales of minutes to hours, with the amplitude anticorrelated with the source luminosity, confirming previous results. In at least eight sources there is evidence that the variability amplitude below 2 keV is greater than that in the hard X-ray band, perhaps indicating variable components other than the power law in the soft band. Ultrarapid variability, implying significant power at frequencies greater than 10-3 Hz is detected in at least five sources but is difficult to detect in most cases, because of the sampling and signal-to-noise ratio. In Mrk 766 and MCG -6-30-15 there is also an indication that the high-frequency power spectra are variable in shape and/or intensity. There is similar evidence in NGC 4151 but on longer timescales.

Using X-ray temperature and surface brightness profiles of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) derived from ASCA (Astro-D) and ROSAT observations, we place constraints on the dark matter (DM) and baryon fraction distributions in the poor clusters Abell 1060 (A1060) and AWM 7. Although their total mass distributions are similar, AWM 7 has twice the baryon fraction of A1060 in the best-fit models. The functional form of the DM distribution is ill determined; however, mass models where the baryon fractions in A1060 and AWM 7 significantly overlap are excluded. Such variations in baryon fraction are not predicted by standard models and imply that some mechanism in addition to gravity plays a major role in organizing matter on cluster scales.

Far-Infrared (FIR) photometry from the the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) on the Herschel Space Observatory is presented for 313 nearby, hard X-ray selected galaxies from the 58-month Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) Active Galactic catalog. The present data do not distinguish between the FIR luminosity distributions at 70 and 160um for Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. This result suggests that if the FIR emission is from the nuclear obscuring material surrounding the accretion disk, then it emits isotropically, independent of orientation. Alternatively, a significant fraction of the 70 and 160um could be from star formation, independent of AGN type. Using a non-parametric test for partial correlation with censored data, we find a statistically significant correlation between the AGN intrinsic power (in the 14-195 keV band ) and the FIR emission at 70 and 160um for Seyfert 1 galaxies. We find no correlation between the 14-195 keV and FIR luminosities in Seyfert 2 galaxies. The observed correlations suggest two possible scenarios: (i) if we assume that the FIR luminosity is a good tracer of star formation, then there is a connection between star formation and the AGN at sub-kiloparsec scales, or (ii) dust heated by the AGN has a statistically significant contribution to the FIR emission. Using a Spearman rank-order analysis, the 14-195 keV luminosities for the Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies are weakly statistically correlated with the F70/F160 ratios., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 10 Figures, 6 Tables

We present the results from broad-band X-ray spectral analysis of 3C 206 and PKS 0707-35 with Suzaku and Swift/BAT, two of the most luminous unobscured and obscured radio-loud active galactic nuclei with hard X-ray luminosities of 10^{45.5} erg s^{-1} and 10^{44.9} erg s^{-1} (14--195 keV), respectively. Based on the radio core luminosity, we estimate that the X-ray spectrum of 3C 206 contains a significant (~ 60% in the 14--195 keV band) contribution from the jet, while it is negligible in PKS 0707-35. We can successfully model the spectra with the jet component (for 3C 206), the transmitted emission, and two reflection components from the torus and the accretion disk. The reflection strengths from the torus are found to be R_{torus} (= \Omega/2\pi) = 0.29 +- 0.18 and 0.41 +- 0.18 for 3C 206 and PKS 0707-35, respectively, which are smaller than those in typical Seyfert galaxies. Utilizing the torus model by Ikeda et al. (2009), we quantify the relation between the half opening angle of a torus (\theta_{oa}) and the equivalent width of an iron-K line. The observed equivalent width of 3C 206, 80^\circ if N_{H}^{eq} = 10^{24} cm^{-2} is assumed. That of PKS 0707-35, 72 +- 36 eV, is consistent with N_{H}^{eq} ~ 10^{23} cm^{-2}. Our results suggest that the tori in luminous radio-loud AGNs are only poorly developed. The trend is similar to that seen in radio-quiet AGNs, implying that the torus structure is not different between AGNs with jets and without jets.

We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of a complete sample of hard X-ray selected AGN in the Northern Galactic Cap of the 58-month Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) catalog, consisting of 100 AGN with b>50deg. This region has excellent potential for further study due to the availability of a wide range of archival multi-wavelength data, and we propose it as a low-redshift analog to the `deep fields' work on AGN at higher redshifts. We present distributions of luminosity, absorption, and other key quantities, from fitting new and archival X-ray data gathered from XMM-Newton, Swift/XRT, ASCA and Swift/BAT. We probe to deeper redshifts than the 9-month BAT catalog (=0.043), and uncover a broader absorbing column density distribution. The fraction of obscured (log N_H >= 22) objects in the sample is ~60%, and 43--56% of the sample exhibits `complex' 0.4--10keV spectra. The soft excess is either well-detected in AGN or undetected, suggesting that the process responsible for producing the soft excess is not ubiquitous. The fraction of Compton-thick sources in our sample is ~9%, and `hidden/buried AGN' constitute ~14% of our sample. Compton reflection is found to be important in a large fraction of our sample using joint XMM-Newton+BAT fits (reflection amplitude = 2.7 +/- 0.75), indicating light bending or extremely complex absorption. The average 1--10keV spectrum for the sample reproduces the 1--10keV X-ray background slope as found for the 9-month BAT AGN sample. ROSAT studies of poor groups of galaxies have revealed hot, diffuse gas only in groups dominated by E/S0 galaxies. Here we investigate the possibility that a similar, but cooler, component exists in spiral-rich groups and can be detected through absorption in QSO spectra. We find that for the expected temperature, density, and metal abundance of the intragroup medium, various high-ionization lines should be detectable. At T ~ 2 × 106 K,O VI, Ne VIII, Mg X, and Si XII lines will be seen. Strong Lyman series lines are also expected. A collisionally ionized gas at these temperatures will not produce much C IV and N V absorption, since it requires a multiphase medium to produce spectra that show all of the above ions. In addition, some lines of sight will likely pass only through the intragroup gas, producing pure "high-ionization" absorption systems (i.e., O VI lines without associated C IV and N V lines). Recent Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Keck observations have revealed the presence of absorption lines with some of the properties we predict for the intragroup medium in spiral-rich groups. The discovery of a hot intragroup medium in spiral-rich groups would have many important consequences for extragalactic astronomy, including the possible pressure confinement of low-ionization absorption-line clouds.

Using ASCA data, we have measured the electron temperature in A2163 out to 1.5h^{-1} Mpc (10a_x) from the center, in three radial bins. The temperatures are 12.2+1.9-1.2 keV, 11.5+2.7-2.9 keV and 3.8+1.1-0.9 keV (90%) in the 0-3 a_x (0-3.5'), 3-6 a_x and 6-13 a_x spherical shells, respectively. Applying the hydrostatic equilibrium and spherical symmetry assumptions and using these data together with the Ginga spectral and the Rosat imaging data, we were able to severely limit the possible binding mass distribution of the generic form rho=rho_0 (1+r^2/a_b^2)^{-n/2}. All the allowed binding mass profiles are steeper than the gas density profiles and mass profiles with the same slope as gas are excluded at a greater than 99% confidence. The total mass inside 0.5h^{-1} Mpc is 4.3+-0.5 10^14 h^{-1} Msun, of which 0.074 h^{-3/2} is gas while inside 1.5h^{-1} Mpc the mass is 1.07+-0.13 10^15 h^{-1} Msun. We note that in the cluster outer part, the timescale for electron-ion temperature equlibration is comparable to the merger timescale, so the measured electron temperature may give an underestimate of the gas pressure there. Otherwise, if our low temperature is indeed representative of the gas temperature in the outer shell, the cluster atmosphere should be convectionally unstable and gas turbulence should exist. Bulk motions of the gas are also expected during the merger. Their existense would increase the total gas pressure above that indicated by the observed temperature. Thus, failure of the "gas follows dark matter" model, favored by hydrodynamic simulations, may be due to the neglect of these phenomena, leading to an underestimate of the total density at large radii., Comment: 19 pages, 5 postscript figures, uses aaspp.sty. X-ray observations of Abell 548 reveal that the hot gas in this cluster is at least as complex as the galaxy distribution. Our ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) image is used in conjunction with optical data from the Minnesota plate-scanning project and redshift data in the literature to investigate the degree of substructure in the intracluster medium and the galaxy distribution. A548 has several X-ray components: hot gas associated with clumps of galaxies, individual sources, and a newly discovered diffuse component. This diffuse component may be promordial gas falling into the cluster for the first time. The optical data suggest that this cluster consists of four major components, not three (as indicated when velocity data are ignored). Simple models of the orbital dynamics suggest that the cluster may not yet have reached its turnaround radius.

The paper presents soft X-ray spectra of three Seyfert 2 galaxies obtained with the ROSAT PSPC. For two of these objects, NGC 5506 and MCG -5-23-16, most of the flux occurs at energies greater than 1 keV and probably represents a low-energy extension of the source seen at higher (greater than 2 keV) energies. The third source, Mrk 348, has very little flux in the ROSAT band, suggesting a photoelectric cutoff at energies above the ROSAT band, in agreement with Ginga observations. In all three galaxies, X-rays are detected at energies below these photoelectric cutoffs with flux above that expected from a model in which the source has the same spectral index as at higher energies (2-10 keV) and is covered by a uniform, cold, photoelectric absorber. This result indicates the presence of an additional component at soft energies, which is referred to as a 'soft excess'. The monochromatic flux of the soft excess measured at 1 keV is about 1-2 percent of the directly viewed hard X-ray continuum in all three galaxies.

The Broad Band X-Ray Telescope, covering the 0.3-12 keV bandpass with moderate spectral resolution, observed the Be/X-ray binary X Per in 1990 December during the Astro-l mission on the Space Shuttle Columbia. The data obtained are the best to date to search for lines and edges. The data are well fitted by a power-law spectrum with a high-energy cutoff. A low value for the high-energy cutoff is found, implying a slightly weaker magnetic field strength for the X-ray pulsar. No iron line is present at about 6.5 keV with an equivalent width greater than 30-40 eV. The BBXRT observation corresponded to the 'off' state of X Per's recent 'phase change'.

The discovery of diffuse X-ray emission from the NGC 2300 group of galaxies using the ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter is reported. The gas distributions is roughly symmetric and extends to a radius of at least 0.2/h(50) Mpc. A Raymond-Smith hot plasma model provides an excellent fit the X-ray spectrum with a best-fit value temperature of 0.9 + -/15 or - 0.14 keV and abundance 0.06 + 0/.12 or - 0.05 solar. The assumption of gravitational confinement leads to a total mass of the group of 3.0 + 0.4 or - 0.5 x 10 exp 13 solar. Baryons can reasonably account for 4 percent of this mass, and errors could push this number not higher than 10-15 percent. This is one of the strongest pieces of evidence that dark matter dominates small groups such as this one. The intragroup medium in this system has the lowest metal abundance yet found in diffuse gas in a group or cluster.

A detailed spectroscopic analysis of a Ginga observation of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 6814 is reported. It is shown that the X-ray data are consistent with a scenario in which the continuum radiation is reprocessed in a highly ionized medium, which can either be an accretion disk or a shell of absorbing material. Both of these can produce the strong observed iron K-alpha line, which must originate within 200 lt-sec of the continuum source. Significant iron K-beta and nickel K-alpha are predicted, based on the iron K-alpha line strength, and these lines partially conceal the iron edge in this source. The spectral variability below about 4 keV, where the apparent absorption increases as the continuum flux decreases, is probably caused by a warm absorber covering the reprocessing system.
