Abstract

The first source catalog of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) reported the detection of a very high energy gamma-ray source, 1LHAASO J1219+2915. This Letter presents a further detailed study of the spectral and temporal behavior of this pointlike source. The best-fit position of the TeV source (R.A. = 185.°05 ± 0.°04, decl. = 29.°25 ± 0.°03) is compatible with NGC 4278 within ∼0.°03. Variation analysis shows an indication of variability on a timescale of a few months in the TeV band, which is consistent with low-frequency observations. Based on these observations, we report the detection of TeV γ -ray emissions from this low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. The observation by LHAASO's Water Cherenkov Detector Array during the active period has a significance level of 8.8 σ with a best-fit photon spectral index Γ = 2.56 ± 0.14 and a flux f _1–10 TeV = (7.0 ± 1.1 _sta ± 0.35 _syst ) × 10 ^−13 photons cm ^−2 s ^−1 , or approximately 5% of the Crab Nebula. The discovery of VHE gamma-ray emission from NGC 4278 indicates that compact, weak radio jets can efficiently accelerate particles and emit TeV photons.

Abstract

Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations have revealed a bright ring of emission around the supermassive black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy. EHT images in linear polarization have further identified a coherent spiral pattern around the black hole, produced from ordered magnetic fields threading the emitting plasma. Here we present the first analysis of circular polarization using EHT data, acquired in 2017, which can potentially provide additional insights into the magnetic fields and plasma composition near the black hole. Interferometric closure quantities provide convincing evidence for the presence of circularly polarized emission on event-horizon scales. We produce images of the circular polarization using both traditional and newly developed methods. All methods find a moderate level of resolved circular polarization across the image (〈∣ v ∣〉 < 3.7%), consistent with the low image-integrated circular polarization fraction measured by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (∣ v _int ∣ < 1%). Despite this broad agreement, the methods show substantial variation in the morphology of the circularly polarized emission, indicating that our conclusions are strongly dependent on the imaging assumptions because of the limited baseline coverage, uncertain telescope gain calibration, and weakly polarized signal. We include this upper limit in an updated comparison to general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation models. This analysis reinforces the previously reported preference for magnetically arrested accretion flow models. We find that most simulations naturally produce a low level of circular polarization consistent with our upper limit and that Faraday conversion is likely the dominant production mechanism for circular polarization at 230 GHz in M87*.

Abstract

Although Fanaroff–Riley type 0 (FR 0) radio galaxies are known to be the most numerous jet population in the local Universe, they are much less explored than the well-established class of FR type I (FR I) and FR type II galaxies due to their intrinsic weakness. Observationally, their nuclear radio, optical, and X-ray properties are comparable to the nuclear environment of FR Is. The recent detection of two FR 0s in the high-energy band suggests that, like in FR Is, charged particles are accelerated there to energies that enable gamma-ray production. Up to now, only the lack of extended radio emission from FR 0s distinguishes them from FR Is. By comparing the spectral energy distribution of FR 0s with that of FR Is and in particular with that of M87 as a well-studied reference source of the FR I population, we find the broadband spectrum of FR 0 s exceptionally close to M87's quiet core emission. Relying on that similarity, we apply a lepto-hadronic jet-accretion flow model to FR 0s. This model is able to explain the broadband spectral energy distribution, with parameters close to particle-field equipartition and matching all observational constraints. In this framework, FR 0s are multimessenger jet sources, with a nature and highly magnetized environment similar to those of the naked quiet core of FR Is.

4. A Candidate for the Least-massive Black Hole in the First 1.1 Billion Years of the Universe

Abstract

We report a candidate of a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z = 5 that was selected from the first near-infrared images of the JWST CEERS project. This source, named CEERS-AGN-z5-1 at absolute 1450 Å magnitude M _1450 = −19.5 ± 0.3, was found via a visual selection of compact sources from a catalog of Lyman break galaxies at z > 4, taking advantage of the superb spatial resolution of the JWST/NIRCam images. The 20 photometric data available from CFHT, Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer, and JWST suggest that the continuum shape of this source is reminiscent of that for an unobscured AGN, and there is a clear color excess in the filters where the redshifted H β +[O iii ] and H α are covered. The estimated line luminosity is L _H _β _+[O _III _] = 10 ^43.0 erg s ^−1 and L _H _α = 10 ^42.9 erg s ^−1 with the corresponding rest-frame equivalent width EW _H _β _+[O _III _] = 1100 Å and EW _H _α = 1600 Å, respectively. Our spectral energy distribution fitting analysis favors the scenario that this object is either a strong broad-line emitter or even a super-Eddington accreting black hole (BH), although a possibility of an extremely young galaxy with moderate dust attenuation is not completely ruled out. The bolometric luminosity, L _bol = 2.5 ± 0.3 × 10 ^44 erg s ^−1 , is consistent with those of z < 0.35 broad-line AGNs with M _BH ∼ 10 ^6 M _⊙ accreting at the Eddington limit. This new AGN population in the first 1.1 billion years of the universe may close the gap between the observed BH mass range at high redshift and that of BH seeds. Spectroscopic confirmation is awaited to secure the redshift and its AGN nature.
