Land usage in Scotland has been affected by forced migration. There are similar areas in Norway in terms of climate and terrian where land is used in ways that benefit the local community, and more people are supported with fertile farms, than in Scotland. The poverty seen in Scotland is man-made and linked to absentee landlords and the usage of the land for sheep, sport and forests of Sitka trees. Land in Scotland should be used for the Scottish people rather than to keep alive the fantasies of outsiders.

The Charter for the Arts in Scotland has achieved little. Prepartaion of the Charter started just before the 1992 general election when there was great hope of political change in Scotland that would create a different climate for the arts. Wide consultation took place and showed two main areas of concern. The limited definition of art and culture, with surveys showing that Scottish Arts Council money was being spent on art forms that 85% of the public did not attend, and the view of artists that artistic values were being subordinated by management decisions.

The trend towards lavish theatre building in Scotland will result in an elite class of theatregoers. The 1980s attempt to popularise theatre has been overshadowed by corporate entertainment needs. The Empire Theatre refurbishment is expected to cost 14 million pounds sterling which could have been spent on production. However, the Citizen's Theatre is providing two studio theatres adjacent to the auditorium.
