The efficacy of single media literacy lessons was examined in reducing media internalization in young adolescents is examined. Results provided support that boys could be included in eating disorder prevention programs and media literacy might represent a promising prevention approach.

Research indicates that the relationship between disturbed eating patterns and self-esteem is attributable to overvalued ideas within a familial context. A correlation was found between the family body-size index and overvalued ideas, specifically that the larger the size, the higher the overvalued ideas.

The norms and construct validity of the eating disorder examination (EDE) with young and middle adolescent female twins aged 12-15 years were investigated. EDE scores increased with age and correlated well with self-report measures of body dissatisfaction and ineffectiveness, thus showing that EDE is likely to perform well as both a diagnostic and predictive tool.

A big sample of female twins from a large community that was studied to find out the effects of early family life on them regarding bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa and depression is discussed. An investigation was carried out to provide insight relating to the clinical significance of eating disorder not otherwise specified-purging only (EDNOS-P) by examining differences between women with lifetime bulimia nervosa purging subtype (BN-P) and EDNOS-P. The results indicated some meaningful differences from BN-P, particularly in the area of lifetime depressive symptomatology and EDNOS-P lies somewhere between BN-P and healthy controls in its clinical significance.

The usefulness of a new, cognitive-based self-help manual for bulimia nervosa was examined. Binge eating, vomiting, four of the five eating attitudes and self-esteem significantly improved between pretreatment and posttreatment using intention-to-treat analyses.

The relation among the shape and weight concerns, domain-specific self-esteem, dietary restraint, and depression is examined with the help of study. Results of the study reveal that women with anorexia nervosa have higher shape and weight concerns and lower self-esteem than restrained eaters.

Teenage girls instructed in self-esteem and media literacy showed less concern with body weight than students without access to this curriculum. Such programs offer the possibility of reducing risk factors for eating disorders.

A review of twin studies of eating disorders indicates that the collective findings of these studies support research to find genes that bring susceptibility to eating disorders. There is still uncertainty about the extent of the contribution of shared environment, but this does not mean that the significant role of environment should be discounted. It is not possible to draw firm conclusions about genetic and environmental contributions to the etiology of anorexia. However, twin studies of bulimia indicate a contribution of addictive genetic effects and unique environmental factors to vulnerability.

The quality of the parental relationship is investigated as a risk factor for subclinical bulimia nervosa, indicating that a conflictual marital relationship can partly act as a risk factor.
