Nearly 40 years ago atomic tests were being carried out’ during which servicemen were exposed to atomic radiation with little or no understanding of the implications’. It is one of these tests, the Mosaic Operations of 1956 off the coast of Australia, that Captain Gower relates here. As commanding officer of HMS DIANA, he and his ship were detained as guinea‐pigs to try and discover the effects of an atomic explosion on a ship, equipment and crew—how much radioactivity could a ship take and remain operational? In his detailed retelling of this near forgotten episode, Captain Gower vividly discusses the preparations, trials and explosions, as well as the political background to the tests’. . The reasons why the effects on the ship's crew were never followed up are still a mystery to those involved and the author concludes with the reminder that many men are still pursuing compensation through the European Commission on Human Rights for illnesses they believe stem from their adventure in the Indian Ocean.
