[Editor's Note: In today's academic and popular literature on the family, the tendency is to pit families' commitments to their own members against families' commitments to their communities. The author finds this dichotomy problematic; she suggests that Catholic social teaching offers a resource to help families embrace values of solidarity and the common good.
