Mass spectra were obtained of cobalt(III) pentacyanide complexes of the Kn[Co(CN)5X] type bombarded by fast atoms, where X = H2O, NO2 −, NO−. The ligand elimination processes from the coordination sphere of the pentacyanides and the redox reactions of the complexes were studied.

The reaction of the pentacyanocobaltate(II) ion with nitric oxide in aqueous solution was studied. Infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry with bombardment by fast atoms showed that the intermediate product formed in this reaction is a binuclear complex of cobalt containing bridge NO− groups.

Within the framework of the so-called localized model, an analysis has been made of the theoretical aspects of using adsorption energy distribution functions as a characteristic of adsorption systems in the course of their preparation. The model materials used in this work were silicon-carbon adsorbents (carbosils), obtained by pyrolysis of methylene chloride, n-heptyl alcohol, and benzyl alcohol. Surface characteristics were determined for eight adsorbents differing in the preparation method and in the thickness of the carbon layer that was deposited. The experimental data confirm the validity of the approach that has been used in investigating the surface of synthesized model adsorbents. The method can be applied for the energy-characterization of catalysts and adsorbents. A comparison of the results from an investigation of the adsorption energy distribution function and experimental data on the morphology of the adsorption centers and their topography can provide a deeper understanding of the mechanisms in catalysts and adsorbent manufacturing processes.

The joint use of methods of IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry with bombardment by fast atoms to identify products of chemisorption of α-e-amino acids on a dehydrated silica surface is described. It was established that amino acids undergo multistage chemical conversions in this case, with the formation of various products of intra- and intermolecular condensation — lactams, linear and cyclic peptides. The composition of the condensation products depends on the chain length of the amino acids.

The temperature dependence of the conductivity of ion-implanted layers of high-pressure polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyproproylene, and polyimide was studied. It was shown that the predominant charge transfer mechanism over a wide temperature range in these layers is movement of charge carriers in a percolation cluster, the multiphonon mode of energy relaxation being taken into account.

The temperature dependence of the conductivity of thin composite films obtained by means of the simultaneous thermal spray-deposition of a polymer (high-pressure polyethylene, PE) and a filler (a metal, viz., silver, copper, or aluminum) in a vacuum has been investigated. It has been ascertained that the conductivity of the PE + Cu and PE + Al films is determined mainly by the tunneling mechanism for the passage of charge carriers between the filler particles. This mechanism also determines the conductivity of the PE + Ag films at low temperatures; at T > 333 K their conductivity is determined by the conductivity of the polymer matrix.

The thermodynamic characteristics of the selectivity of stationary phases in gas-liquid chromatography have been used to study the change in selectivity of a stationary phase with its increasing molecular mass within the limits of the same class of compounds. It is shown that the entropy of disssolution is the dominant thermodynamic factor of selectivity in the case of paraffinic stationary phases; a linear relatinship exists between the logarithm of relative retention of different sorbates and the reciprocal molecular mass of the stationary phase. In the case of solutions where hydrogen bonds can be formed, the enthalpy of dissolution serves as the dominant factor; in this case a linear relationship exists between the relative retention of alcohols and the reciprocal molecular mass of the stationary phase (polyethylene glycol). For the other classes of sorbates and stationary phases, the entropy as well as the enthalpy of dissolution contribute to the relative retention when the molecular phase varies within a single class of substances. The theoretical postulations have been confirmed by experimental data for paraffinic stationary phases, polyethylene glycols, and phthalic acid esters.
