The article discusses the nature of political system, legitimacy and succession in Morocco. The state's institutions are based on a constitutional monarchy which claims legitimacy through its genealogical descent from the Prophet Muhammad. Modern Morocco also provides other forms of legitimacy for its ruling institutions. It has a constitution accepted by referendum in 1972. The armed forces and the various police and internal security services are closely linked to the monarchy. This uniqueness of the Moroccan monarchy formulates and defines the problems of succession.
