The article presents the highlights of the Society for Research into Higher Education (SHRE) annual conference that was held in Newport, South Wales in December 2012. In their paper, New Zealand-based Victoria University's Amanda Gilbert and University of Kent's Fran Beaton claimed that part-time teachers are not getting the support they need despite their growing importance within the academy. The study results is also contained in the book by Beaton and Gilbert.

In their paper, professors Linda Evans and Justine Mercer claimed that over a third of professors believe that achieving professional status is driven by politics and large grants and not on academic excellence. The study was co-authored by University of Leeds research fellow Matt Homer.
The article refers to a paper by the Learned Society of Wales which contends that Wales' institutions rank highly when measured against the standards of national and international competitors as it aims to counter prevailing negative perceptions of research performance of Wales's universities.
