- Abstract
"The role of Augustine of Hippo in textual linguistics". The contribution of Augustine of Hippo (354-430) to linguistic thought has aroused little interest in the reference works of the history of linguistics. Despite being one of the greatest philosophers of the language of antiquity, the dissertations about his figure have been contradictory, sporadic and partial. To overcome this condition of degraded author, historiography can study in an integral way the autobiographical work of the Confessions (396-397) and the exegetical work of De la doctrina cristiana (396). They represent, respectively, the model of knowledge of rhetoric and dialectics, and the principles of textual criticism to interpret Christian doctrine. The reading of these two works shows Augustine of Hippo as a bridge of linguistic thought between the classical world and the medieval and modern tradition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
