Abstract

Physicochemical properties of arsenic sulfide sludge (ASS) from copper smelter (ASS-I) and lead−zinc smelter (ASS-II) were examined by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM−EDS, TG−DTA, XPS and chemical phase analysis method. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP), Chinese standard leaching tests (CSLT), three-stage sequential extraction procedure (BCR) and batch leaching experiments (BLE) were used to investigate the environmental stability. The ASSs from different smelters had obviously different physicochemical and environmental properties. The phase composition and micrograph analysis indicate that ASS-I mainly consists of super refined flocculent particles including amorphous arsenic sulfide adhered with amorphous sulfur and that ASS-II mainly consists of amorphous arsenic sulfide. The valence state of arsenic in both sludges is trivalent, but the valence composition of sulfur is quite different. The ASSs have thermal instability properties. The results of TCLP and CSLT indicate that the concentrations of As and Pd in the leaching solution exceed the standard limits. More than 5% and 90% of arsenic are in the form of acid soluble and oxidizable fractions, respectively, which explains the high arsenic leaching toxicity and environmental activity of ASS. This research provides comprehensive information for the disposal of ASS from copper and lead−zinc smelter.

Abstract

The evolution of microstructure and microhardness was studied in a commercial tungsten-25% rhenium (mass fraction) (W-25Re) alloy processed by the high pressure torsion (HPT) procedure under a pressure of 7.7 GPa up to 10 revolutions at different temperatures. The results show that the samples processed by 10 revolutions at room temperature could have the smallest grain size at around 0.209 μm. High saturation hardness (HV ∼1200) could be achieved after the rapid strengthening stage for samples processed by 10 revolutions both at room temperature and at 573 K. Microstructural observation and analysis from Hall–Patch relationship could reveal that grain refinement and grain boundaries strengthening are the main factors of hardening mechanism in W-25Re alloy. It is also demonstrated that sintered W-25Re sample may have brittle phase separation phenomenon after HPT processing.

48. Morphology transformation of primary strip αphase in hot working of two-phase titanium alloy

Abstract

Microstructural development in hot working of TA15 titanium alloy with primary strip αstructure was investigated with the aim to globularize αstrips. Results show that the mechanisms of morphology transformation are the same to the spheroidization mechanisms of lamellar structure. Boundary splitting and termination migration are more important than coarsening due to the large size of strip α. The αstrips are stable in annealing due to the unfavorable geometrical orientation of intra-αboundaries, the large thickness of strip and the geometrical stability of αparticles. Predeformation and low speed deformation accelerate globularization of αstrips in the following ways: direct changing of particle shape, promotion of boundary splitting and termination migration by increasing high angle grain boundaries and interfacial area, promotion of coarsening by forming dislocation structures. Large predeformation combined with high temperature annealing is a feasible way to globularize strip α.

49. Morphology development of elongated αphases in hot working of large-scale titanium alloy plate

Abstract

The role of subtransus hot working on microstructure morphology of TA15 titanium alloy plate with elongated αphases was studied by quantitative metallography on different sections. The results show that the microstructure morphology is mainly affected by loading direction. When the sample is compressed along normal direction, microstructure on the section vertical to normal direction has equiaxed primary αphase but microstructure on the section vertical to rolling direction has strip primary αphase with long axis along tangential direction. When the sample is compressed along rolling direction, microstructure on the section vertical to normal direction has strip primary αphase elongated along tangential direction but microstructure on the section vertical to rolling direction consists of strip and irregular broad-band primary αphase. The strip primary αphase aspect ratio is smaller at lower temperature due to the dynamic break-down of αphase. The difference on primary αphase aspect ratio between different sections decreases after compression along distinct directions in two loading passes, suggesting the improvement of equiaxity of primary αphase.
