Ensuring the high accessibility of railway stops and stations is essential to effective transport systems in urban areas. There are different ways to analyze accessibility at the station level. In this paper, it has been assumed that railway stops and stations should be located in places with significant demand for passenger rail transport characterized by a highly dense and diversity-rich land use structure. Therefore, the presented classification uses data on the built environment in the surroundings of these elements of the railway infrastructure, with particular attention to the type of each building. The analysis was performed for the Metropolis GZM area. Based on the gathered spatial data, railway stops and stations in the aspect of the density and diversity of the built environment in their vicinity were classified. This classification can be applied to the assessment of accessibility.

The problem of effective management of the railway freight flows in the conditions of the multiplicity of operators requires the rationalization of the transportation pro-cess. The further development of the authors’ research on creating the mathematical model of the railway freight flows in the region transportation and technological sys-tem is presented. For the first time, the theory of algebraic curves of higher orders is used to create a territorial model of the oligopolistic market of freight traffic. The al-gorithm for creating a model of freight transportation is based on the analysis of the qualitative and quantitative indicators of the operator company in the considered re-gion with the use of analytical, heuristic, and graphic capabilities of math software. The theoretical substantiation of the territorial picture, the freight transportation market in the region is obtained. The carried-out research allows to specify possible ways of optimization of freight traffic distribution.

The author proposes to develop special models that are built based on finite-state machine, Mealy, in order to display information about technological processes at railway stations. The input alphabet of such machines is represented by the real signals (from the floor equipment, the related information systems and the dispatch office personnel). This representation allows one to formalize the software design process of real-time information management systems for these technological processes. The article demonstrates the possibility of formal transition from the automaton model to the software algorithms. The proposed approach was tested when designing the information system for Nizhnedneprovsk junction railway yard.

A methodology for the classification of railway passenger stations was developed in this study. Four groups of factors are defined to study the characteristics of the station: potential of the town, importance of the town, infrastructural factors, and characteristics of passengers. In the research we investigated 18 factors and studied 98 passenger stations of railway network in Bulgaria. The method of principal components has been applied for grouping the factors and cluster analysis has been applied to classify the stations. The factors have been classified into 4 components by the method of principal components. The stations have been classified into 6 groups using hierarchical cluster analysis. The methods, Average linkage between group and Within-groups linkage, and distance-type measures Euclidean distance and Squared Euclidean distance were compared to verify the results of cluster analysis. The grouping of the stations has been used for the determination of the stops for categories intercity passenger trains. The main groups of stations for servicing express trains are the first, second, third, fourth and fifth groups. In the sixth group are stations for servicing fast passenger trains. The methodology can be applied to the study of all stations and stops in the rail network.

The article presents ways and goals of categorization of railway stations and stops in the Czech railway network. The aim of this categorization is to classify railway stations (or stops) in the railway network according to a suite of entrance parameters (e.g. municipality population, transfer links, job opportunities, tourist attractiveness). On the basis of these parameters, railway stations and stops will be classified into several categories, which will be used to specify the conclusions for station equipment concerning ticket offices, commercial services, waiting rooms and other accessories. Research results can be used as a support for infrastructure managers and railway operators to optimise the scale of their services.

In this paper, we look at the level of customer satisfaction as well as customer services in a passenger railway station. Specifically the objective of this paper is to develop and employ a simple method for analyzing the customer satisfaction in railway stations to help us identify ways for improving both the customer service and the station design. The method developed is applied for the purposes of Newcastle Central rail station. After having studied different approaches we used a survey to collect the necessary data for analysis. A comparison of the opinions of different categories of rail station users has been undertaken. As a result different areas for improvement have been identified. This paper can be seen as a starting point for further research on a detailed customer satisfaction analysis for Newcastle Central.
