The complications of tonsillectomy are most common due to the surgical procedures or the anesthetic managements. The anatomic localization and the potential complications of the surgical procedure shall keep the surgeons away from underestimation. Local tonsillectomy is usually preferred as it is performed in a short time and as it has minimum risk carried out with anesthetic management. Serious complications can rarely be seen after local tonsillectomy. In this case unilateral pulmonary atelectasis was the result of the coagulum that obstructed the airway. It was diagnosed and treated medically and the patient was discharged without any complication.

Objective: Many studies enquiring the etiology of chronic sinusitis and nasal polyposis are being carried out. In recent years the following hypothesis is being discussed. In our study, we searched for the susceptibility of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis patients against fungal allergens, which in turn could end up with allergic reactions in the sinonasal mucosa.Methods: In this study, 67 patients (50 males and 17 females) who have applied to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of the PTT Training and Research Hospital, being diagnosed with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis were investigated. In this study the eosinophil counts and total IgE levels of the patients were determined; also skin tests to determine the sensitivity against fungal allergens were also carried out. The specimens taken from the patients during the operation were investigated for the presence of fungi in microbiology laboratories.Results: As a result of the histopathological examinations, allergic mucin was detected in 70%, allergic polyposis in 62% and fungus elements in 10% of the 67 patients. By showing the presence of fungus in the sinonasal mucosa in %20 of the immunological, histopathological and cultural tests results, the diagnosis of allergic fungal sinusitis was proved.Conclusion: The role of the allergic reactions developing against fungi, in the etiology of chronical rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis are still under discussion. In our study, we detected allergic reactions that developed against fungal cells to be responsible for chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis in 20% of our patients.

Silent mastoiditis has been used as a synonym for latent or masked mastoiditis in the literature, defines a subclinical infectious process in the mucosal layer and the osseous structure of the mastoid cells in spite of an intact tympanic membrane. With the widespread usage of wide-spectrum antibiotics, the incidence of classical mastoiditis presentation has decreased and the incidence of chronic and subclinically proceeding silent mastoiditis that creates life-threatening situations because of being overlooked, has increased. Simple mastoidectomy has been carried out to the two cases with intracranial complications that are diagnosed as silent mastoiditis using temporal bone computerized tomography and scintigraphy in our clinic and the diagnosis has been confirmed peroperatively. After getting over an otitis media infection, the patient should be followed up in case of a silent mastoiditis even though a medical therapy is given. The diagnosis should be confirmed with a scintigraphic examination thinking of a latent infection proceeding in the mastoid in the patients continuing to complain of unclear symptoms like hearing loss, fullness and slight pain in the ear and retroauricular over sensitivity.
