Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) imaging, in which deviations in the bright field beam are in proportion to the electric field, has been extensively studied in the context of pure elastic scattering. Here we discuss differential phase contrast formed from core-loss scattered electrons, i.e. those that have caused inner shell ionization of atoms in the specimen, using a transition potential approach for which we study the number of final states needed for a converged calculation. In the phase object approximation, we show formally that differential phase contrast formed from core-loss scattered electrons is mainly a result of preservation of elastic contrast. Through simulation we demonstrate that whether the inelastic DPC images show element selective contrast depends on the spatial range of the ionization interaction, and specifically that when the energy loss is low the delocalisation can lead to contributions to the contrast from atoms other than that ionized. We further show that inelastic DPC images remain robustly interpretable to larger thicknesses than is the case for elastic DPC images, owing to the incoherence of the inelastic wavefields, though subtleties due to channelling remain. Lastly, we show that while a very high dose will be needed for sufficient counting statistics to discern differential phase contrast from core-loss scattered electrons, there is some enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio with thickness that makes inelastic DPC imaging more achievable for thicker samples., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Author(s). The rich information of electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) comes from the complex inelastic scattering process whereby fast electrons transfer energy and momentum to atoms, exciting bound electrons from their ground states to higher unoccupied states. To quantify EELS, the common practice is to compare the cross-sections integrated within an energy window or fit the observed spectrum with theoretical differential cross-sections calculated from a generalized oscillator strength (GOS) database with experimental parameters. The previous Hartree-Fock-based and DFT-based GOS are calculated from Schrödinger's solution of atomic orbitals, which does not include the full relativistic effects. Here, we attempt to go beyond the limitations of the Schrödinger solution in the GOS tabulation by including the full relativistic effects using the Dirac equation within the local density approximation, which is particularly important for core-shell electrons of heavy elements with strong spin-orbit coupling. This has been done for all elements in the periodic table (up to Z = 118) for all possible excitation edges using modern computing capabilities and parallelization algorithms. The relativistic effects of fast incoming electrons were included to calculate cross-sections that are specific to the acceleration voltage. Nanobeam electron diffraction can probe local structural properties of complex crystalline materials including phase, orientation, tilt, strain, and polarization. Ideally, each diffraction pattern from a projected area of a few unit cells would produce a clear Bragg diffraction pattern, where the reciprocal lattice vectors can be measured from the spacing of the diffracted spots, and the spot intensities are equal to the square of the structure factor amplitudes. However, many samples are too thick for this simple interpretation of their diffraction patterns, as multiple scattering of the electron beam can produce a highly nonlinear relationship between the spot intensities and the underlying structure. Here, we develop a stacked Bloch wave method to model the diffracted intensities from thick samples with structure that varies along the electron beam. Our method reduces the large parameter space of electron scattering to just a few structural variables per probe position, making it fast enough to apply to very large fields of view. We apply our method to SrTiO 3 /PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 multilayer samples, and successfully disentangle specimen tilt from the mean polarization of the PbTiO 3 layers. Quantitative differential phase contrast imaging of materials in atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy using segmented detectors is limited by various factors, including coherent and incoherent aberrations, detector positioning and uniformity, and scan-distortion. By comparing experimental case studies of monolayer and few-layer graphene with image simulations, we explore which parameters require the most precise characterisation for reliable and quantitative interpretation of the reconstructed phases. Coherent and incoherent lens aberrations are found to have the most significant impact. For images over a large field of view, the impact of noise and non-periodic boundary conditions are appreciable, but in this case study have less of an impact than artefacts introduced by beam deflections coupling to beam scanning (imperfect tilt-shift purity)., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
