One way of satisfying increased market demand and simultaneously achieving a reduced environmental load in the industrial paper production is the use of fibrous agricultural residues. The aims of this study were i) to investigate the effect of alkaline - hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) pre-treatments on the delignification of Miscanthus × giganteus stalks (MGS) and ii) establishing the suitability of MGS as feedstock and their exploitation in pulp and paper manufacturing. It was demonstrated that the proposed treatment is an efficient delignification method for the non-wood fiber sources, such as miscanthus. A significant outcome of this work was the observation that HC treatment preserved the fibres lengths and surface quality of raw MGS, but at the same time increased the amount of kinked and curled fibers present in cavitated miscanthus fibers. The average miscanthus fiber length was found to be relatively short at 0.45 (±0.28) mm, while the slenderness ratio, the flexibility coefficient and Runkel ratio values were calculated to be 28.13, 38.16 and 1.62, respectively. The estimated physical properties of MGS pulp hand-sheets were 24.88 (±3.09) N m g -1 as the tensile index, 0.92 (±0.06) kPa m 2 g -1 as the burst index and 4.0 (±0.37) mN m 2 g -1 as the tear index. In this study, parenchyma cellulose, which was extracted from maize stalk pith as an abundant source of agricultural residues, was applied for preparing cellulose nanoparticles (CNPs) via an ultrasound-assisted etherification and a subsequent sonication process. The ultrasonic-assisted treatment greatly improved the modification of the pith cellulose with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride, leading to a partial increase in the dissolubility of the as-obtained product and thus disintegration of sheet-like cellulose into nanoparticles. While the formation of CNPs by ultrasonication was largely dependent on the cellulose consistency in the cationic-modified system. Under the condition of 25% cellulose consistency, the longer sono-treated duration yielded a more stable and dispersible suspension of CNP due to its higher zeta potential. Degree of substitution and FT-IR analyses indicated that quaternary ammonium salts were grafted onto hydroxyl groups of cellulose chain. SEM and TEM images exhibited the CNP to have spherical morphology with an average dimeter from 15 to 55 nm. XRD investigation revealed that CNPs consisted mainly of a crystalline cellulose Ι structure, and they had a lower crystallinity than the starting cellulose. Moreover, thermogravimetric results illustrated the thermal resistance of the CNPs was lower than the pith cellulose. In paper production industry, microbial contaminations of process waters are common and can cause damage to paper products and equipment as well as the occurrence of pathogens in the end products. Chlorine omission has led to the usage of costly reagents and products of lower mechanical quality. In this study, we have tested a rotation generator equipped with two sets of rotor and stator assemblies to generate developed cavitation (unsteady cloud shedding with pressure pulsations) or supercavitation (a steady cavity in chocked cavitation conditions) for the destruction of a persistent bacteria Bacillus subtilis. Our results showed that only supercavitation was effective and was further employed for the treatment of waters isolated from an enclosed water recycle system in a paper producing plant. The water quality was monitored and assessed according to the chemical (COD, redox potential and dissolved oxygen), physical (settleable solids, insolubles and colour intensity) and biological methods (yeasts, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, bacterial spores and moulds). After one hour of treatment, a strong 4 logs reduction was achieved for the anaerobic sulphate reducing bacteria and for the yeasts; a 3 logs reduction for the aerobic bacteria; and a 1.3 logs reduction for the heat resistant bacterial spores. A 22% reduction in COD and an increase in the redox potential (37%) were observed. Sediments were reduced by 50% and the insoluble particles by 67%. Refining of cellulose pulp is a critical step in obtaining high quality paper characteristics, however, this process is slow and costly especially for refining longer conifer fibers which are the preferred source for high quality paper production and give the paper its strength. In this study, we have applied a novel rotation generator of hydrodynamic cavitation for refining conifer rich pulp samples. Our results show that the device is capable of generating intense shear forces and multiple zones of developed cavitation and is successful in increasing the drainage rate of high consistency pulp (3%). The paper produced by means of the obtained pulp has higher quality because of its higher tensile index (50.5 kN m kg -1 ) and burst index (3 kPa m 2  g -1 ). These physical parameters were sufficient for newsprint paper and other paper/board quality manufacture. In addition, this laboratory scale rotation generator proved to be economically efficient in comparison to the routinely employed laboratory beaters. H2O2 was used in the final stage of a multistage bleaching process to increase ISO brightness by 2-3%, because of the poor selectivity and bleachability. However, concerns about the environmental load of the bleaching process have led to the efficient use of oxygen-derived compounds, with a concomitant decrease in the quantity of chlorine-derived compounds consumed. In this study, thermomechanical pulp (TMP) and unbleached kraft pulp (UKP) were bleached with H₂O₂ and ultrasonicated in order to increase the bleaching efficiency, and the effects of some bleaching conditions such as treatment time, treatment concentration, and temperature were determined. The best bleaching efficiency of pulp was obtained using H₂O₂ with ultrasonication (at 20 kHz) of the pulp mixture at 45 °C for 30 min. The ISO brightness of the bleached pulp increased up to 1.9%, although the bleached pulp yield was slightly reduced to 1.5%. Magnesium sulfate was used as a bleaching stabilizer to increase the bleached pulp yield and viscosity. As a result, the bleached pulp yield and viscosity increased by 2.1% and 10%, compared with fully bleached pulp at the end of the process, respectively, despite a decrease in ISO brightness., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Agricultural and forest residues obtained after harvesting are promising renewable sources, suitable as a source of pulp for cellulose nanocrystal manufacturing. Cavitation-assisted softening of the lignin-carbohydrate matrix offers sample opportunity for cellulose fibril liberation and degradation of amorphous cellulose. The present work addresses cavitation assisted cellulose fibril and crystal liberation and film forming properties of the supernatant phase of treated agricultural and forest residues. The effectiveness of this method has been evaluated according to crystallinity indices and hydrogen bond energies, as measured by FT-IR analysis. It has been observed that the use of cavitation increased the crystallinity and caused partial removal and degradation of the lignin matrix. Wheat is grown in most of the Indian and Chinese regions and after harvesting, the remaining straw offers considerable promise as a renewable source most suitable for papermaking and as a pulping resource. Delignification of wheat straw offers ample scope for energy conservation by way of the application of the process intensification principles. The present work reviews the pretreatment techniques available for improving the effectiveness of the conventional approach for polysaccharide component separation, softening and delignification. A detailed overview of the cavitation assisted delignification process has been presented based on the earlier literature illustrations and important operational guidelines have been presented for overall low-cost and amenable energy utilization in the processes. The effectiveness of the methods has been evaluated according to yield and properties of the isolated fibers in comparison to the conventional treatment. Also the experimental results of one such non-conventional treatment scheme based on the use of hydrodynamic cavitation have been presented for the pulping of wheat straw. The effect of hydrodynamically induced cavitation on cell wall matrix and its components have been characterized using FT-IR analysis with an objective of understanding the cavitation assisted digestion mechanism on straws. It has been observed that the use of hydrodynamic cavitation does not degrade the fibrillar structure of cellulose but causes relocalisation and partial removal of lignin. Overall it appears that considerable improvement can be obtained due to the use of pretreatment or alternate techniques for delignification, which is an energy intensive step in the paper making industries., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Cellulose fibers were treated with ultrasound in order to improve the accessibility and the reactivity of cellulose. The influence of ultrasound treatment on changes of morphology structure, accessibility and oxidation reactivity of cellulose with sodium periodate were discussed. The results revealed an increase in cellulose's accessibility in terms of water retention value (WRV) with increasing ultrasound treatment time, corresponding to 73.0%, 75.6%, 80.8%, 98.7% and 119.0% after treated for 0, 90, 180, 360 and 720 s, respectively. Furthermore, the regioselective oxidation reactivity of cellulose with sodium periodate was also successfully improved by the ultrasound treatment. However, no significant changes in crystallinity of cellulose were noted after ultrasound treatment. The oxidized products dialdehyde cellulose (DAC) was further characterized by means of FTIR, X-ray diffraction and SEM.

Treatment of the dewaxed wheat straw with 0.5 M KOH at 35 degrees C for 2.5 h without ultrasonic irradiation and with ultrasound assistance for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 min resulted in a dissolution of 43.9%, 43.9%, 43.9%, 44.4%, 44.4%, 45.6%, 46.8%, and 49.1% of the original lignin, respectively. Much better results were achieved under the ultrasonic irradiation time for 35 min where nearly 50% of the original lignin was solubilized at 35 degrees C for 2.5 h. The purity of the lignin preparations isolated by alkali with ultrasound assistance was higher than that of the lignin fraction obtained by alkali without ultrasonic irradiation, and their purity increased with an increment of irradiation time between 5 and 35 min, in which the content of associated polysaccharides in the former lignin preparations (0.87-1.06%) was lower than that of the latter lignin fraction (1.16%). In addition, the lignins isolated by alkali with ultrasonic irradiation time between 5 and 30 min showed a slightly higher molecular weight and thermal stability than the lignin obtained by alkali without ultrasound assistance. No substantial differences in the main structure features between the lignin preparations isolated by alkali and ultrasound-assisted alkali extractions were found.

Effect of ultrasound on the yield and physiochemical properties of hemicelluloses from wheat straw using 0.5 M NaOH in 60% aqueous methanol has been comparatively studied. The results showed that applying sonication for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 min resulted in an increasing yield of hemicelluloses by 2.9%, 3.9%, 6.0%, 8.6%, 8.6%, 8.6%, and 9.2% of the original hemicelluloses, respectively, in comparison with the experiment performed without ultrasonic assistance. The hemicelluloses isolated by ultrasound-assisted extraction, showed a slightly lower molecular weight, associated lignin, and thermal stability during the first stage of decomposition, but slightly more linear as compared to the hemicelluloses obtained by classical method without ultrasonic irradiation. No substantial differences in the main structure features between the hemicellulosic preparations isolated by classical or ultrasound-assisted extractions were found.
