Improving tractive effort is a very complex task in locomotive design. It requires the development of not only mechanical systems but also power systems, traction machines and traction algorithms. At the initial design stage, traction algorithms can be verified by means of a simulation approach. A simple single wheelset simulation approach is not sufficient because all locomotive dynamics are not fully taken into consideration. Given that many traction control strategies exist, the best solution is to use more advanced approaches for such studies. This paper describes the modelling of a locomotive with a bogie traction control strategy based on a co-simulation approach in order to deliver more accurate results. The simplified and advanced modelling approaches of a locomotive electric power system are compared in this paper in order to answer a fundamental question. What level of modelling complexity is necessary for the investigation of the dynamic behaviours of a heavy-haul locomotive running under traction? Railway vehicles adopt mechatronic devices to maximize the traction/braking effort. These systems often use complex algorithms that require long experimental validation tests on track. The possibility to perform the same tests on a roller-rig gives the opportunity to simplify the validation activity, under safe conditions, and to reduce the costs. The main challenge is to be able to reproduce the same adhesion conditions on a roller-rig with respect to the track, especially in degraded conditions. First, the paper shows experiments performed to reproduce degraded adhesion on a conventional roller-rig for a single wheelset. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is the most important active safety system for passenger cars. Unfortunately, the literature is not really precise about its description, stability and performance. This research improves a five-phase hybrid ABS control algorithm based on wheel deceleration [W. Pasillas-Lépine, Hybrid modeling and limit cycle analysis for a class of five-phase anti-lock brake algorithms, Veh. Syst. Dyn. 44 (2006), pp. 173–188] and validates it on a tyre-in-the-loop laboratory facility. Five relevant effects are modelled so that the simulation matches the reality: oscillations in measurements, wheel acceleration reconstruction, brake pressure dynamics, brake efficiency changes and tyre relaxation. The time delays in measurement and actuation have been identified as the main difficulty for the initial algorithm to work in practice. Three methods are proposed in order to deal with these delays. It is verified that the ABS limit cycles encircle the optimal braking point, without assuming any tyre parameter being a priori known. In this article, a logic for vehicle dynamics control during partial braking while turning a corner is presented, which only requires knowledge of the instantaneous speed of the four wheels. For this reason, the proposed control algorithm can be adopted on all ABS equipped cars. A scheme of the simulation program for logic validation is described, which is constituted by a loop of software models of the principal vehicle subsystems which are singly illustrated. The proposed logic has been tested both in closed and open-loop maneuvers. The results are provided in the form of time histories of the principal analyzed quantities.
