Objective: To investigate the impact of extreme climate on geological disasters in Shanxi and propose effective disaster prevention and mitigation strategies. Methods: Using daily temperature and precipitation data from 27 meteorological stations in Shanxi Province from 1975 to 2020, 32 extreme climate indices were calculated. Combined with geological disaster site data, the distribution characteristics of extreme climates and their relationship with geological disasters were analyzed, and a regression model for geological disaster risk zones was constructed. Results: Sixteen extreme climate indices in Shanxi Province showed significant changes, especially TMAXmean (100% significant). Indices related to negative precipitation effects showed a declining trend, with 77.78% being significant, while 96.3% of positive temperature effect indices showed an increasing trend, with 73.6% being significant. Geological disaster hotspots were concentrated in the mid-altitude (500–1500 m) hilly and low mountain areas along the central north–south axis and on Q and Pz strata. Extreme high-temperature indices were significantly positively correlated with geological disaster hotspots, while extreme low-temperature indices were negatively correlated. Indices related to extreme heavy precipitation (e.g., R99p.Slope, RX5day.Slope) were associated with an increase in geological disaster hotspots, whereas higher total precipitation and frequent heavy precipitation events were associated with a decrease in disaster hotspots. The grey relational degree between the Z-score and TXn.Slope, TXx.Slope, GSL.Slope, and TX90P.Slope was greater than 0.8. The random forest model performed best in evaluation metrics such as MAE, RMSE, and R2. Conclusions: Shanxi is likely to experience more extreme high-temperature and precipitation events in the future. The low-altitude hilly and terraced areas in Zones III and VII are key regions for geological disaster prevention and control. High temperatures and extreme rainfall events generally increase the disaster risk, while higher total precipitation reduces it. This study presented an assessment of climate extremes in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region, utilizing downscaled climate projections from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) Global Climate Models (GCMs). The study outputs uncovered statistically significant trends indicating a rise in extreme precipitation and temperature events throughout SEA for both the near-term (2021–2060) and long-term (2061–2100) future under both SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios, in comparison to the historical period (1950–2014). Moreover, we investigated the seasonal fluctuations in rainfall and temperature distributions, accentuating the occurrence of drier dry seasons and wetter rainy seasons in particular geographic areas. The focused examination of seven prominent cities in SEA underscored the escalating frequency of extreme rainfall events and rising temperatures, heightening the urban vulnerability to urban flooding and heatwaves. This study's findings enhance our comprehension of potential climate extremes in SEA, providing valuable insights to inform climate adaptation, mitigation strategies, and natural disaster preparedness efforts within the region. Based on the data of Sichuan Province from 2007 to 2021, the extreme climate events in Sichuan Province was identified by statistical method, and the coupling coordination degree of water resources-climate system and separate water resource system was analyzed. Based on the difference of coupling coordination degree under these two systems, the influence mechanism of extreme climate factors on the water resource system is analyzed. The results show that the extreme climate types in Sichuan Province gradually transition from extreme drought to extreme precipitation and from extreme low temperature to extreme high temperature. When climate factors are not considered, the coupling coordination degree of the water resource system is generally improved and the distribution is more concentrated. The Central Valley of California is one of the most prolific agricultural regions in the world. Agriculture is reliant on the conjunctive use of surface-water and groundwater. The lack of available surface-water and land-use changes have led to pumping-induced groundwater-level and storage declines, land subsidence, changes to streamflow and the environment, and the degradation of water quality. As a result, in part, the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) was developed. An examination of the components of SGMA and contextualizing regional model applications within the SGMA framework was undertaken to better understand and quantify many of the components of SGMA. Specifically, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) updated the Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM) to assess hydrologic system responses to climatic variation, surface-water availability, land-use changes, and groundwater pumping. MODFLOW-OWHM has been enhanced to simulate the timing of land subsidence and attribute its inelastic and elastic portions. In addition to extending CVHM through 2019, the new version, CVHM2, includes several enhancements as follows: managed aquifer recharge (MAR), pumping with multi-aquifer wells, inflows from ungauged watersheds, and more detailed water-balance subregions, streamflow network, diversions, tile drains, land use, aquifer properties, and groundwater level and land subsidence observations. Combined with historical approximations, CVHM2 estimates approximately 158 km3 of storage loss in the Central Valley from pre-development to 2019. About 15% of the total storage loss is permanent loss of storage from subsidence that has caused damage to infrastructure. Climate extremes will likely complicate the efforts of water managers to store more water in the ground. CVHM2 can provide data in the form of aggregated input datasets, simulate climatic variations and changes, land-use changes or water management scenarios, and resulting changes in groundwater levels, storage, and land subsidence to assist decision-makers in the conjunctive management of water supplies. This study examined the impacts of climate change and human activities on runoff within the Feiling Hydrological Station watershed in the Qinhe River basin, utilizing the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. Several climate change and extreme land-use scenarios were evaluated for their effects on runoff. Results demonstrated the SWAT model's suitability for runoff simulation in the watershed, revealing a negative correlation between runoff and temperature changes, and a positive correlation with precipitation changes. Significantly, runoff responses to precipitation variations of ±10% and ±20% were more marked than those to temperature changes of ±1 °C and ±2 °C. In scenarios of extreme woodland and fallow land, runoff decreased, whereas in scenarios of extreme cropland and grassland, it increased, particularly in the extreme farmland scenario. Drought, as a recurring extreme climatic event, inflicts diverse impacts on ecological systems, agricultural productivity, water resources, and socio-economic progress globally. Discerning the drought patterns within the evolving environmental landscape of the Yellow River Basin (YRB) is imperative for enhancing regional drought management and fostering ecological conservation alongside high-quality development. This study utilizes meteorological drought indices, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and the self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (scPDSI), for a detailed spatiotemporal analysis of drought conditions. It examines the effectiveness of these indices in the basin's drought monitoring, offering a comprehensive insight into the area's drought spatiotemporal dynamics. The findings demonstrate the following: (1) SPEI values exhibit distinct fluctuation patterns at varying temporal scales, with more pronounced fluctuations at shorter scales. Drought years identified via the 12-month SPEI time scale include 1965, 1966, 1969, 1972, 1986, 1997, 1999, 2001, and 2006. (2) A modified Mann–Kendall (MMK) trend test analysis of the scPDSI time series reveals a worrying trend of intensifying drought conditions within the basin. (3) Correlation analysis between SPEI and scPDSI across different time scales yields correlation coefficients of 0.35, 0.54, 0.69, 0.76, and 0.62, highlighting the most substantial correlation at an annual scale. Spatial correlation analysis conducted between SPEI and scPDSI across various scales reveals that, within diverse temporal ranges, the correlation peaks at a 12-month time scale, with subsequent prominence observed at 6 and 24 months. As extreme climate events become more common with global warming, groundwater is increasingly vital for combating long-term drought and ensuring socio-economic and ecological stability. Currently, the mechanism of meteorological drought propagation to groundwater drought is still not fully understood. This study focuses on the North China Plain (NCP), utilizing statistical theories, spatiotemporal kriging interpolation, and the Mann–Kendall trend test to examine the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of groundwater from 2005 to 2021. Based on drought theory, the characteristics and propagation process of drought are further quantified. Key findings reveal the following: (1) Shallow groundwater depths in the NCP follow a zonal pattern from the western mountains to the eastern plains and coastal areas. Over two-thirds of this region showed an increase in groundwater depth at a rate of 0–0.05 m/a; (2) Groundwater drought frequency typically ranges from 3 to 6 times, with an average duration of 10 to 30 months and average severity between 10 and 35; (3) Delayed effects last between 0 to 60 months, with attenuation effects varying from 0 to 3 and prolonged effects extending from 0 to 16. Additionally, delayed effects intensify with increasing time scales, while prolonged effects weaken. Notably, both delayed and prolonged effects in the north of the NCP are more pronounced than in the south of the region. This study quantifies the process by which meteorological drought propagates to groundwater drought, offering a new perspective for understanding the interaction between groundwater and meteorological drought. As global climate change intensifies, the global atmospheric circulation process is undergoing significant changes, and the local water vapor pattern has also changed. This study takes the Wei River Basin as the research area. Firstly, an evaluation index system for extreme precipitation was established, and the time-series characteristics of the magnitude, frequency, and duration of extreme precipitation were analyzed. Statistical methods were used to analyze the non-consistency in time-series changes in extreme precipitation indicators. Using spatial heterogeneity analysis methods, the spatial variation differences in extreme precipitation in the Wei River Basin were identified. This study selected the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index, global land-ocean temperature index (LOTI), and land surface temperature (LST) index to quantitatively evaluate the impact of climate change on regional extreme precipitation and analyzed the correlation between temperature and extreme precipitation, identifying the key driving factors of extreme precipitation changes. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The southern region of the Wei River Basin experiences more frequent and intense precipitation events, while the northern region experiences relatively few. (2) From 1981 to 2021, the intensity, frequency, and duration of precipitation events in the Wei River Basin gradually increased, with the most significant increase in extreme precipitation in the Guanzhong Plain. (3) Global climate change has an important impact on precipitation events in the Wei River Basin. The increase in the ENSO, LOTI, and LST indices may indicate an increase in the probability of drought and flood events in the Wei River Basin. The relationships between extreme precipitation and temperature present a peak structure. This conclusion is helpful to better understand the impact of climate change on extreme precipitation in the Wei River Basin and provides some support for the response to extreme meteorological events under the background of future climate change.
