Abstract: Environmentally–friendly disinfection methods are needed in many industrial applications. As a natural metabolite of many organisms, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-based disinfection may be such a method as long as H2O2 is used in non-toxic concentrations. Nevertheless, when applied alone as a disinfectant, H2O2 concentrations need to be high enough to achieve significant pathogen reduction, and this may lead to phytotoxicity. This paper shows how H2O2 disinfection concentrations could be significantly reduced by using the synergic lethality of H2O2 and sunlight the first time for fungi and disinfection. Experiments were performed on spores of Fusarium solani, the ubiquitous, pytho- and human pathogenic fungus. Laboratory (250-mL bottles) and pilot plant solar reactors (2 × 14 L compound parabolic collectors, CPCs) were employed with distilled water and real well water under natural sunlight. TiO2-catalyst suspensions work efficiently in photocatalysis for wastewater treatment. Nevertheless, once photocatalysis is complete, separation of the catalyst from solution becomes the main problem. Catalyst recovery has been enhanced through charge neutralisation and coagulation with electrolytes at lab and pilot-plant scale (40 L) to evaluate the potential for its separation after photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Zeta-potential analysis showed that the isoelectric point (IEP) of TiO2 suspensions is near pH 7. Settling rates and hydrodynamic diameter of TiO2 particles are maximum at the IEP. However, suspensions are stable at different pH. TiO2 was reused in solar photocatalysis pilot-plant (40 L) for treatment of tetrachloroethylene (C2Cl4) comparing two procedures: reuse of the entire suspension after destruction of the organics without separation of the catalyst, and reuse of the catalyst after it had settled to the bottom and clear water had been removed. Photocatalytic efficiency worsens with successive runs when catalyst and water are reused without separation, whereas, when TiO2 is separated, the photocatalyst is not deactivated. Photo-driven advanced oxidation process (AOP) with peracetic acid (PAA) has been poorly investigated in water and wastewater treatment so far. In the present work its possible use as tertiary treatment of urban wastewater to effectively minimize the release into the environment of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria was investigated. Different initial PAA concentrations, two light sources (sunlight and UV-C) and two different water matrices (groundwater (GW) and wastewater (WW)) were studied. Low PAA doses were found to be effective in the inactivation of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli (AR E. coli) in GW, with the UV-C process being faster (limit of detection (LOD) achieved for a cumulative energy (Q UV ) of 0.3 kJL -1 with 0.2 mg PAA L -1 ) than solar driven one (LOD achieved at Q UV  = 4.4 kJL -1 with 0.2 mg PAA L -1 ). Really fast inactivation rates of indigenous AR E. coli were also observed in WW. Higher Q UV and PAA initial doses were necessary to effectively remove the three target CECs (carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole), with CBZ being the more refractory one. In conclusion, photo-driven AOP with PAA can be effectively used as tertiary treatment of urban wastewater but initial PAA dose should be optimized to find the best compromise between target bacteria inactivation and CECs removal as well as to prevent scavenging effect of PAA on hydroxyl radicals because of high PAA concentration., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Solar-driven advanced oxidation processes were studied in a pilot-scale photoreactor, as tertiary treatments of effluents from an urban wastewater treatment plant. Solar-H 2 O 2 , heterogeneous photocatalysis (with and/or without the addition of H 2 O 2 and employing three different photocatalysts) and the photo-Fenton process were investigated. Chemical (sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, and diclofenac) and biological contaminants (faecal contamination indicators, their antibiotic resistant counterparts, 16S rRNA and antibiotic resistance genes), as well as the whole bacterial community, were characterized. Heterogeneous photocatalysis using TiO 2 -P25 and assisted with H 2 O 2 (P25/H 2 O 2 ) was the most efficient process on the degradation of the chemical organic micropollutants, attaining levels below the limits of quantification in less than 4 h of treatment (corresponding to Q UV  < 40 kJ L -1 ). This performance was followed by the same process without H 2 O 2 , using TiO 2 -P25 or a composite material based on graphene oxide and TiO 2 . Regarding the biological indicators, total faecal coliforms and enterococci and their antibiotic resistant (tetracycline and ciprofloxacin) counterparts were reduced to values close, or beneath, the detection limit (1 CFU 100 mL -1 ) for all treatments employing H 2 O 2 , even upon storage of the treated wastewater for 3-days. Moreover, P25/H 2 O 2 and solar-H 2 O 2 were the most efficient processes in the reduction of the abundance (gene copy number per volume of wastewater) of the analysed genes. However, this reduction was transient for 16S rRNA, intI1 and sul1 genes, since after 3-days storage of the treated wastewater their abundance increased to values close to pre-treatment levels. Similar behaviour was observed for the genes qnrS (using TiO 2 -P25), bla CTX-M and bla TEM (using TiO 2 -P25 and TiO 2 -P25/H 2 O 2 ). Interestingly, higher proportions of sequence reads affiliated to the phylum Proteobacteria (Beta- and Gammaproteobacteria) were found after 3-days storage of treated wastewater than before its treatment. In this paper, we present the photo-Fenton treatment in a solar pilot-plant scale of several EU priority hazardous substances (Alachlor, Atrazine, Chlorfenvinphos, Diuron and Isoproturon) dissolved in water. The results have been evaluated not only from the point of view of contaminant disappearance and mineralisation, but also of toxicity reduction and enhancement of biodegradability. Degradation was monitored by total organic carbon, pesticide concentration by HPLC-UV, inorganics released by ion chromatography, and biodegradability by the Zahn-Wellens (Z-W) test. The total volume of the solar photoreactor, composed of compound parabolic collectors with a total area of 4.16m2, was between 70 and 82 L. The treatment was shown to be effective, mineralising all of the pesticides tested, both alone and in mixtures. In order to find out the conditions for biocompatibility using the photo-Fenton reaction as a pre-treatment step, wastewater inoculated with unacclimated municipal sludge containing pesticides after certain degradation time was evaluated by the Z-W test. Biodegradability was enhanced (70% considered biodegradable) by the photo-Fenton treatment after 12-25min. It may be concluded that the photo-Fenton treatment consistently enhances biodegradability of wastewater containing pesticides.
