With the global concerns on antibiotic resistance (AR) as a public health issue, it is pivotal to have data exchange platforms for studies on antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment. For this purpose, the NORMAN Association is hosting the NORMAN ARB&ARG database, which was developed within the European project ANSWER. The present article provides an overview on the database functionalities, the extraction and the contribution of data to the database. In this study, AR data from three studies from China and Nepal were extracted and imported into the NORMAN ARB&ARG in addition to the existing AR data from 11 studies (mainly European studies) on the database. This feasibility study demonstrates how the scientific community can share their data on AR to generate an international evidence base to inform AR mitigation strategies. The open and FAIR data are of high potential relevance for regulatory applications, including the development of emission limit values / environmental quality standards in relation to AR. The growth in sharing of data and analytical methods will foster collaboration on risk management of AR worldwide, and facilitate the harmonization in the effort for identification and surveillance of critical hotspots of AR. The effects of solar photo-Fenton (SPF) process mediated by the iron chelate Fe 3+ imminodisuccinic acid (Fe:IDS) on both the inactivation of seven relevant pathogens and the potential for antibiotic resistance transfer (degradation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and after treatment regrowth), in real secondary treated urban wastewater, were investigated for the first time. A comparison with results obtained by sunlight/H 2 O 2 process and Fe 3+ ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (Fe:EDDS) SPF was also carried out. ARGs were quantified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in samples before and after (3 h) the treatment. The persistence of the selected pathogens and ARGs was also evaluated in regrowth tests (72 h) under environmentally mimicking conditions. Fe:IDS SPF resulted to be more effective (from 1.4 log removal for Staphylococcus spp. to 4.3 log removal for Escherichia coli) than Fe:EDDS SPF (from 0.8 log removal for Pseudomonas aeruginosa to 2.0 log removal for Total coliphages) and sunlight/H 2 O 2 (from 1.2 log removal for Clostridium perfringens to 3.3 log removal for E. coli) processes for the seven pathogens investigated. Potential pathogens regrowth was also severely affected, as no substantial regrowth was observed, both in presence and absence of catalase. A similar trend was observed for ARGs removal too (until 0.001 fold change expression for qnrS after 3 h). However, a poor effect and a slight increase in fold change was observed after treatment especially for gyrA, mefA and intl1. Overall, the effect of the investigated processes on ARGs was found to be ARG dependent. Noteworthy, coliphages can regrow after sunlight/H 2 O 2 treatment unlike SPF processes, increasing the risk of antibiotic resistance transfer by transduction mechanism. The efficiency of a new Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP), namely the photo Fenton like process UV-C/H 2 O 2 /IDS-Cu, in removing determinants of antibiotic resistance and pathogenic bacteria was compared to a consolidated AOP (namely UV-C/H 2 O 2 ) in a secondary treated municipal WasteWater (WW). A reductionist experimental laboratory-based approach was applied on real WW and the parameters were collected by an alternative integrated approach using (i) flow cytometry to enumerate bacteria and test for the fitness of the bacterial communities and (ii) molecular analyses to define the community composition (16S rRNA amplicon sequencing) and the abundances of Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) and of the class 1 integron (intI1 gene) (by quantitative PCR). The same approach was applied also to post-treatment regrowth tests (24 h) to define the potential persistence of the tested parameters. These experiments were performed in both, human pathogens favorable conditions (HPC, in rich medium and 37°C) and in environmental mimicking conditions (EMC, original WW and 20°C). UV-C/H 2 O 2 /IDS-Cu process resulted to be more effective than the UV-C/H 2 O 2 in inactivating bacterial cells in the EMC post-treatment regrowth experiments. Both AOPs were efficiently abating potential human pathogenic bacteria and ARGs in the HPC regrowth experiments, although this trend could not be detected in the measurements taken immediately after the disinfection. In comparison with the UV-C/H 2 O 2 , the UV-C/H 2 O 2 /IDS-Cu process did not apparently offer significant improvements in the abatement of the tested parameters in the WW effluent but, by evaluating the results of the regrowth experiments it was possible to extrapolate more complex trends, suggesting contrasting efficiencies visible only after a few hours. This study offers a detailed view on the abatement efficiency of microbiological/genetic parameters for the UV-C/H 2 O 2 /IDS-Cu process, calling for technical adjustments for this very promising technology. The effect of the UV-C/free chlorine (FC) process on the removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from real urban wastewater as well as the effect of UV-C radiation on the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) compared to FC process alone was investigated. Unlike of FC process, UV-C/FC was really effective in the degradation of the target CECs (carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole and imidacloprid) in real wastewater (87% degradation of total CECs within 60 min, Q UVC  = 1.33 kJ L -1 ), being CBZ the most refractory one (49.5%, after 60 min). The UV-C radiation significantly affected the formation of THMs. THMs concentration (mainly chloroform) was lower in UV-C/FC process after 30 min treatment (<1 μgL -1  = limit of quantification (LOQ)) than in FC process in dark (2.3 μgL -1 ). Noteworthy, while in FC treated wastewater chloroform concentration increased after treatment, UV-C/FC process resulted in a significant decrease (residual concentrations below the LOQ), even after 24 h and 48 h post-treatment incubation. The formation of radicals due to UV-C/FC process can reduce THMs compared to chlorination process, because part of FC reacts with UV-C radiation to form radicals and it is no longer available to form THMs. These results are encouraging in terms of possible use of UV-C/FC process as advanced treatment of urban wastewater even for possible effluent reuse., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. There is increasing public concern regarding the fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during wastewater treatment, their persistence during the treatment process and their potential impacts on the receiving water bodies. In this study, we used quantitative PCR (qPCR) to determine the abundance of nine ARGs and a class 1 integron associated integrase gene in 16 wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents from ten different European countries. In order to assess the impact on the receiving water bodies, gene abundances in the latter were also analysed. Six out of the nine ARGs analysed were detected in all effluent and river water samples. Among the quantified genes, intI1 and sul1 were the most abundant. Our results demonstrate that European WWTP contribute to the enrichment of the resistome in the receiving water bodies with the particular impact being dependent on the effluent load and local hydrological conditions. The ARGs concentrations in WWTP effluents were found to be inversely correlated to the number of implemented biological treatment steps, indicating a possible option for WWTP management. Furthermore, this study has identified bla OXA-58 as a possible resistance gene for future studies investigating the impact of WWTPs on their receiving water., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. Photo-driven advanced oxidation process (AOP) with peracetic acid (PAA) has been poorly investigated in water and wastewater treatment so far. In the present work its possible use as tertiary treatment of urban wastewater to effectively minimize the release into the environment of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria was investigated. Different initial PAA concentrations, two light sources (sunlight and UV-C) and two different water matrices (groundwater (GW) and wastewater (WW)) were studied. Low PAA doses were found to be effective in the inactivation of antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli (AR E. coli) in GW, with the UV-C process being faster (limit of detection (LOD) achieved for a cumulative energy (Q UV ) of 0.3 kJL -1 with 0.2 mg PAA L -1 ) than solar driven one (LOD achieved at Q UV  = 4.4 kJL -1 with 0.2 mg PAA L -1 ). Really fast inactivation rates of indigenous AR E. coli were also observed in WW. Higher Q UV and PAA initial doses were necessary to effectively remove the three target CECs (carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac and sulfamethoxazole), with CBZ being the more refractory one. In conclusion, photo-driven AOP with PAA can be effectively used as tertiary treatment of urban wastewater but initial PAA dose should be optimized to find the best compromise between target bacteria inactivation and CECs removal as well as to prevent scavenging effect of PAA on hydroxyl radicals because of high PAA concentration., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Photo-Fenton process is among the most effective advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in urban wastewater treatment and disinfection, but its application as tertiary treatment at full scale has not been a feasible/attractive option so far because optimum conditions are typically achieved under acidic pH. In this work a new photo Fenton like process (UV-C/H 2 O 2 /IDS-Cu) using iminodisuccinic acid (IDS)-Cu complex as catalyst, was compared to other processes (UV-C/H 2 O 2 /Cu, UV-C/H 2 O 2 /Fe, H 2 O 2 and UV-C) in urban wastewater disinfection. Since this is the first time that IDS-Cu complex was isolated and used as catalyst, preliminary tests to evaluate the mineralization of a model compound (phenol, 25 mg L -1 initial concentration) in water by UV-C/H 2 O 2 /IDS-Cu were carried out. Almost complete mineralization of phenol (95%) was observed after 60 min treatment, being the process more effective than all other investigated AOPs (Fenton and photo-Fenton processes). This process was also proven to be more effective in the inactivation of E. coli (complete inactivation (3.5 log units) in 10 min) at natural pH (7.8 ± 0.5) in real wastewater, than the other processes investigated. Unlike of what observed for E. coli inactivation, the investigated processes only partially inactivated total bacterial population (from 18% for UV-C to 43% for UV-C/H 2 O 2 /Cu), according to flow cytometry measurements. In particular, Cu based photo-Fenton processes resulted in the higher percentage of inactivated total cells, thus being consistent with the results of E. coli inactivation. It is worthy to note that, as H 2 O 2 was decreased, UV-C/H 2 O 2 /Cu-IDS was more effective than UV-C/H 2 O 2 /Cu process. Moreover, the formation of small and large clusters decreased in the presence of Cu and Cu-IDS complex, and process efficiency improved accordingly; these results show that Cu based AOPs can more effectively disaggregate clusters, thus making disinfection process more effective than Fe based AOPs., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of TiO₂ photocatalysis on the inactivation of an antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli strain selected from an urban wastewater treatment plant (UWWTP) effluent was investigated. Different light sources including a 250 W wide spectrum lamp, a 125 W UV-A lamp and solar radiation, as well as, photocatalysts loadings (TiO₂ Degussa P25) in the range from 0.05 to 2.00 g TiO₂ L(-1) were evaluated. The higher efficiency (total bacterial inactivation after 10 min of irradiation) was observed in the absence of TiO₂ when the wastewater was irradiated using the 250 W lamp. In the presence of TiO₂ a decreasing inactivation trend was observed (99.76% and 72.22% inactivation after 10 min irradiation at 0.10 and 2.00 g TiO₂ L(-1) respectively). Under solar simulated conditions the highest inactivation efficiency (93.17%) after 10 min of irradiation was achieved at the lower photocatalyst loading (0.05 g TiO₂ L(-1)). The concept of "reactor optical thickness" was introduced to explain the rates of disinfection observed. The optimum photocatalyst loading estimated by radiation absorption-scattering modeling was found to be 0.1 g TiO₂ L(-1) for all lamps. The difference between experimental tests and modeling may be due to TiO₂ particles aggregation. Comparative kinetic tests between solar and solar simulated photocatalytic (SSP) processes using 0.05 g TiO₂ L(-1) in suspension showed a quite similar inactivation behavior up to 30 min of irradiation, but only the SSP process resulted in a total inactivation of bacteria after 60 min of exposure. Urban wastewater treatment plants (UWTPs) are among the main sources of antibiotics' release into various compartments of the environment worldwide. The aim of the present paper is to critically review the fate and removal of various antibiotics in wastewater treatment, focusing on different processes (i.e. biological processes, advanced treatment technologies and disinfection) in view of the current concerns related to the induction of toxic effects in aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and the occurrence of antibiotics that may promote the selection of antibiotic resistance genes and bacteria, as reported in the literature. Where available, estimations of the removal of antibiotics are provided along with the main treatment steps. The removal efficiency during wastewater treatment processes varies and is mainly dependent on a combination of antibiotics' physicochemical properties and the operating conditions of the treatment systems. As a result, the application of alternative techniques including membrane processes, activated carbon adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and combinations of them, which may lead to higher removals, may be necessary before the final disposal of the effluents or their reuse for irrigation or groundwater recharge., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely used in water and wastewater treatment for the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants as well as to improve biodegradability of industrial wastewater. Unfortunately, the partial oxidation of organic contaminants may result in the formation of intermediates more toxic than parent compounds. In order to avoid this drawback, AOPs are expected to be carefully operated and monitored, and toxicity tests have been used to evaluate whether effluent detoxification takes place. In the present work, the effect of AOPs on the toxicity of aqueous solutions of different classes of contaminants as well as actual aqueous matrices are critically reviewed. The dualism toxicity-biodegradability when AOPs are used as pre-treatment step to improve industrial wastewater biodegradability is also discussed. The main conclusions/remarks include the followings: (i) bioassays are a really useful tool to evaluate the dangerousness of AOPs as well as to set up the proper operative conditions, (ii) target organisms for bioassays should be chosen according to the final use of the treated water matrix, (iii) acute toxicity tests may be not suitable to evaluate toxicity in the presence of low/realistic concentrations of target contaminants, so studies on chronic effects should be further developed, (iv) some toxicity tests may be not useful to evaluate biodegradability potential, in this case more suitable tests should be applied (e.g., activated sludge bioassays, respirometry)., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The degradation of 15 emerging contaminants (ECs) at low concentrations in simulated and real effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plant with photo-Fenton at unchanged pH and Fe=5 mg L(-1) in a pilot-scale solar CPC reactor was studied. The degradation of those 15 compounds (Acetaminophen, Antipyrine, Atrazine, Caffeine, Carbamazepine, Diclofenac, Flumequine, Hydroxybiphenyl, Ibuprofen, Isoproturon, Ketorolac, Ofloxacin, Progesterone, Sulfamethoxazole and Triclosan), each with an initial concentration of 100 microg L(-1), was found to depend on the presence of CO(3)(2-) and HCO(3)(-) (hydroxyl radicals scavengers) and on the type of water (simulated water, simulated effluent wastewater and real effluent wastewater), but is relatively independent of pH, the type of acid used for release of hydroxyl radicals scavengers and the initial H(2)O(2) concentration used. Degradation kinetics and mineralization of an urban wastewater treatment plant effluent contaminated with a mixture of pharmaceutical compounds composed of amoxicillin (10 mg L(-1)), carbamazepine (5 mg L(-1)) and diclofenac (2.5 mg L(-1)) by TiO(2) photocatalysis were investigated. The photocatalytic effect was investigated using both spiked distilled water and actual wastewater solutions. The process efficiency was evaluated through UV absorbance and TOC measurements. A set of bioassays (Daphnia magna, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Lepidium sativum) was performed to evaluate the potential toxicity of the oxidation intermediates. A pseudo-first order kinetic model was found to fit well the experimental data. The mineralization rate (TOC) of the wastewater contaminated with the pharmaceuticals was found to be really slow (t(1/2)=86.6 min) compared to that of the same pharmaceuticals spiked in distilled water (t(1/2)=46.5 min). The results from the toxicity tests of single pharmaceuticals, their mixture and the wastewater matrix spiked with the pharmaceuticals displayed a general accordance between the responses of the freshwater aquatic species (P. subscapitata>D. magna). In general the photocatalytic treatment did not completely reduce the toxicity under the investigated conditions (maximum catalyst loading and irradiation time 0.8 g TiO(2) L(-1) and 120 min respectively).

In the present study the degradation kinetics and mineralization of diclofenac (DCF) by the TiO(2) photocatalysis were investigated in terms of UV absorbance and COD measurements for a wide range of initial DCF concentrations (5-80mgL(-1)) and photocatalyst loadings (0.2-1.6gTiO(2)L(-1)) in a batch reactor system. A set of bioassays (Daphnia magna, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Artemia salina) was performed to evaluate the potential detoxification of DCF. A pseudo-first-order kinetic model was found to fit well most of the experimental data, while at high initial DCF concentrations (40 and 80mgL(-1)) and at 1.6gTiO(2)L(-1) photocatalyst loading a second-order kinetic model was found to fit the data better. The toxicity of the treated DCF samples on D. magna and P. subcapitata varied during the oxidation, probably due to the formation of some intermediate products more toxic than DCF. Unicellular freshwater algae was found to be very sensitive to the treated samples as well as the results from D. magna test were consistent to those of algae tests. A. salina was not found to be sensitive under the investigated conditions. Finally, UV absorbance analysis were found to be an useful tool for a fast and easy to perform measurement to get preliminary information on the organic intermediates that are formed during oxidation and also on their disappearance rate.
