This study analyses over a decade (2009–2022) of monitoring data to understand the impact of hydrological characteristics on water quality and phytoplankton dynamics in Prospect Reservoir, a critical water supply for Greater Sydney, Australia, known for its excellent water quality. Water quality and phytoplankton dynamics were related to hydrodynamics, linked to flow management and the water quality of inflows. Phytoplankton biovolume increased after a prolonged drawdown and subsequent refill event, mainly driven by dinoflagellates, and corresponded to increases in total phosphorus and water temperature. The hydrological period following the 2019/2020 summer bushfires (post-bushfire) that impacted connected reservoirs, was marked by increased flow activity and nutrient loading, leading to significant shifts in the phytoplankton community. Functional group classification and ordination analysis indicated a transition from taxa typically dominant in oligotrophic conditions to meso‑eutrophic. This transition correlated with elevated nutrient levels and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), and reduced Secchi depth and dissolved oxygen, providing evidence of eutrophication. Q index indicated good water quality post-bushfire, contrasting with a eutrophic status assessment using Chl-a. Our findings highlight the importance of analysing long-term datasets encompassing varied hydroclimatological conditions for a deeper understanding of reservoir behaviour. A comprehensive approach to water quality assessment is recommended, combining functional group classification, Q index and Chl-a measurements for effective reservoir health assessment. This research provides novel insights into the effects of disturbances such as bushfires, on water quality and phytoplankton dynamics in an underrepresented geographic region, offering valuable knowledge for managing water resources amidst growing climate variability. Abstract: The control of phytoplankton growth is mainly related to the availability of light and nutrients. Both may select phytoplankton species, but only if they occur in limiting amounts. During the last decade, the functional groups approach, based on the physiological, morphological and ecological attributes of the species, has proved to be a more efficient way to analyze seasonal changes in phytoplankton biomass. We analysed the dynamics of the phytoplankton functional groups sensu Reynolds, recognising the driving forces (light, mixing regime, and nutrients) in the Sau Reservoir, based on a one–year cycle (monthly surface-water sampling). The Sau Reservoir is a Mediterranean water-supply reservoir with a canyon-shaped basin and a clear and mixed epilimnion layer. The long stratification period and high light availability led to high phytoplankton biomass (110.8 fresh-weight mg L−1) in the epilimnion during summer. The reservoir showed P-limitation for phytoplankton growth in this period. All functional groups included one or more species (X2-Rhodomonas spp.; Y- Cryptomonas spp.; F-Oocystis lacustris; K-Aphanocapsa spp.) selected by resources, especially phosphorus. Species of Cryptomonas (group Y) dominated during the mixing period (winter season) in conditions of low light and relatively high availability of dissolved nutrients. Increases in water-column stability during spring stratification led to phytoplankton biomass increases due to the dominance of small flagellate functional groups (X2 and X3, chrysophyceans). The colonial chlorophycean O. lacustris (group F) peaked during the mid-summer stratification, when the mixed epilimnion was clearly depleted in nutrients, especially SRP. High temperature and increases in nutrient concentration during the end-summer and mid-autumn resulted in a decrease of green algae (group F) and increase of Aphanocapsa spp. (cyanobacteria, group K) and dinoflagellates (group Lo ). The study also revealed the important role of physical processes in the seasonal gradient, in selecting phytoplankton functional groups, and consequently in the assessment of ecological status. The Q index (assemblage index) based on functional groups indicated the overall good ecological status of the Sau Reservoir, which varied as a function of the mixing regime. Temporal variability in lake phytoplankton is controlled largely by a complex interplay between hydrodynamic and chemical factors, and food web interactions. We explored mechanisms underlying phytoplankton interannual variability in Lake Washington (USA), using a 25-yr time series of water quality data (1975–1999). Time-series analysis and PCA were used to decompose chlorophyll data into modes of variability. We found that phytoplankton dynamics in Lake Washington were characterized by four seasonal modes, each of which was associated with different ecological processes. The first mode coincided with the period when the system was light limited (January–March) and phytoplankton patterns were driven by the amount of available solar radiation. The second mode (April–June) coincided with the peak of the spring bloom and the subsequent decline of phytoplankton biomass, and was largely controlled by total phosphorus levels and grazing pressure from cladoceran zooplankton. Evidence of co-dependence and tight relationship between phytoplankton and cladoceran dynamics were also found from July to October when a large portion of the phosphorus supply in the mixed layer was provided by zooplankton excretion. The fourth mode (November–December) was associated with the transition to thermal and chemical homogeneity and the winter phytoplankton minima (2–2.5μg/l). Finally, we examined the effects of meteorological forcing and large-scale oceanic climate fluctuations (ENSO and PDO) on phytoplankton dynamics and assessed the significance of their role on the interannual variability in the lake. Lake Pareloup is studied since 1983. The model ASTER that simulated the ecosystem of the lake during the first phase of the study (1983–1987) has been modified. The new model, called ASTER2000 aims to improve the estimation of the trophic level and the water quality of different reservoirs. To this purpose, NH4, NO3 and O2 were added as state variables. Affluents and pumping inflow have also been considered in order to consider the evolution of the watershed inflow and the variation from year to year in rainfall and pumping inflow. We have a long data series (1983–1998) that allows testing the model under different hydro-climatic conditions. The model simulates the state variables for this period in a satisfactory way. The evolution of nutrient concentrations differences bound to year-to-year entries are well represented, which would have been impossible with the original model. The addition of variables permits to rely on a larger range of the water quality criteria. In combination with the thermal forcing (temperature and stratification) provided by the EOLE model, ASTER2000, represents a strong and easy tool which could be used on many other reservoirs. The main modification necessitated in such applications concerns the type of diatoms dominating: consumed or not by the zooplankton. It is also indispensable to have input data in line with the structure of the model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
