Redstem filaree is a troublesome weed for sugarbeet growers in northern Wyoming and southern Montana. Field studies were conducted in Powell, WY, in 2006 and 2008 to determine the influence of season-long interference of various redstem filaree densities and the duration of interference on sugarbeet. Root and sucrose yield decreased with increasing redstem filaree density. The rectangular hyperbola model with the asymptote (A) bounded at 100% maximum yield reduction characterized the relationship between redstem filaree density and sugarbeet yield reduction. The estimated parameterI(percent yield reduction per unit weed density as density approaches zero) was 5% for root and sucrose yield reduction. Sugarbeet root yield decreased as the duration of redstem filaree interference increased. The critical timing of redstem filaree removal to avoid 5 and 10% root yield reduction was estimated to be 25 and 32 d after sugarbeet emergence, respectively. Redstem filaree interference did not affect the sucrose content percentage. These results demonstrate that redstem filaree is competitive with sugarbeet and should be managed appropriately to reduce negative effects on yield.

Field studies were carried out at two sites in 2005 using common lambsquarters seed collected from long-term research plots near Scottsbluff, NE; Fort Collins, CO; and Torrington, WY, to determine the effect of herbicide selection pressure on glyphosate susceptibility. Parental herbicide exposure influenced the level of glyphosate susceptibility exhibited by a subsequent generation. Common lambsquarters selected from historical plots receiving continuous and exclusive use of glyphosate exhibited lower mortality in response to 420 g ae ha−1 glyphosate compared with selections from nonglyphosate treatment histories. Selections from rotating glyphosate treatment histories demonstrated an intermediate tolerance response. Differences in response were also influenced by environmental conditions. Three models that empirically predict crop yield from crop and weed density were evaluated for their fit to 30 data sets from multistate, multiyear winter wheat–jointed goatgrass interference experiments. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify which model would generally perform best for the prediction of yield (damage function) in a bioeconomic model and which model would best fulfill criteria for hypothesis testing with limited amounts of data. Seven criteria were used to assess the fit of the models to the data. Overall, Model 2, provided the best statistical description of the data. Model 2, regressions were most often statistically significant, as indicated by approximate F tests, explained the largest proportion of total variation about the mean, gave the smallest residual sum of squares, and returned residuals with random distribution more often than Models 1, and 3,. Secale cereale is a serious weed problem in winter Triticum aestivum–producing regions. The interference relationships and economic thresholds of S. cereale in winter T. aestivum in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming were determined over 4 yr. Winter T. aestivum density was held constant at recommended planting densities for each site. Target S. cereale densities were 0, 5, 10, 25, 50, or 100 plants m−2. Secale cereale–winter T. aestivum interference relationships across locations and years were determined using a negative hyperbolic yield loss function. To examine site-to-site and year-to-year variation in winter Triticum aestivum L. (winter wheat)-Aegilops cylindrica Host. (jointed goatgrass) interference relationships, the rectangular hyperbolic yield loss function was fit to data sets from multiyear field experiments conducted at Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The model was fit to three measures of A. cylindrica density: fall seedling, spring seedling, and reproductive tiller densities. Two parameters: i, the slope of the yield loss curve as A. cylindrica density approaches zero, and a, the maximum percentage yield loss as A. cylindrica density becomes very large, were estimated for each data set using nonlinear regression. Fit of the model to the data was better using spring seedling densities than fall seedling densities, but it was similar for spring seedling and reproductive tiller densities based on the residual mean square (RMS) values. Yield loss finctions were less variable among years within a site than among sites for all measures of weed density. For the one site where year-to-year variation was observed (Archer, WY), parameter a varied significantly among years, but parameter i did not. Yield loss functions differed significantly among sites for 7 of 10 comparisons. Site-to-site statistical differences were generally due to variation in estimates of parameter i. Site-to-site and year-to-year variation in winter T aestivum-A. cylindrica yield loss parameter estimates indicated that management recommendations made by a bioeconomic model cannot be based on a single yield loss function with the same parameter values for the winter T aestivumproducing region. The predictive ability of a bioeconomic model is likely to be improved when yield loss functions incorporating time of emergence and crop density are built into the model's structure.

Field experiments were conducted at five locations in Colorado, Kansas, and Wyoming in 1994–1995 and 1995–1996 to compare the effects of MON 37500 rate and application timings on downy brome control and winter wheat tolerance. MON 37500 at 18 to 35 g ha−1applied preemergence or fall postemergence reduced downy brome density 71 to 92% in 1995. Spring-applied MON 37500 suppressed downy brome growth but did not reduce plant density. No application reduced downy brome density in 1996. At each location, downy brome was controlled best by MON 37500 applied preemergence or fall postemergence at 35 g ha−1. MON 37500 did not affect wheat height at Archer or Torrington, WY, and Burlington or Stratton, CO, but wheat treated preemergence or fall postemergence was taller than untreated wheat at Hays, KS, in 1995. Spring-postemergence-treated wheat at Hays in 1995 was shorter than untreated, preemergence-, or fall-postemergence-treated wheat. Wheat head density did not differ among treated and untreated plots at Torrington, but herbicide treatment increased wheat yields. Wheat head density increased with all MON 37500 treatments at Hays in 1995, as did yield. However, preemergence and fall-postemergence applications resulted in the highest wheat yields. No herbicide treatment affected head density or yield at Hays in 1996.

Research was conducted to evaluate the effects of primary tillage (moldboard plowing and chisel plow- ing), secondary tillage (row cultivation), and herbicides on weed species changes in the soil seed bank in three irrigated row cropping sequences over a 3-yr period. The cropping sequences consisted of continuous corn for 3 yr (CN), continuous pinto beans for 3 yr (PB), and sugarbeets for 2 yr followed by corn in the third year (SB). A comparison between moldboard and chisel plowing indicated that weed seed were more prevalent near the soil surface after chisel plowing. The density of certain annual weed seed over the 3-yr period increased more rapidly in the seed bank after chisel plowing compared to moldboard plowing. Species exhibiting the most pronounced increase included hairy nightshade and stinkgrass in the PB cropping sequence and redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters in the SB sequence. Conversely, kochia seed density in the SB sequence decreased more rapidly in chisel-plowed plots. Row cultivation generally reduced seed bank densities of most species compared to uncultivated plots. Herbicide use in each cropping sequence produced a shift in the weed seed bank in favor of species less susceptible to applied herbicides. In particular, seed of hairy nightshade became prevalent in the PB cropping sequence, and seed of kochia, redroot pigweed, and common lambsquarters became prevalent in the SB sequence. Densities up to 100 downy brome m2were established in winter wheat in southeastern Wyoming and west-central Kansas to quantify wheat yield loss from downy brome interference and to approximate economic threshold levels. A quadratic equation best described wheat yield loss as a function of weed density when downy brome emerged within 14 days after wheat emergence. Densities of 24, 40, and 65 downy brome m2reduced wheat yield by 10, 15, and 20%, respectively. Wheat yield was not reduced when downy brome emerged 21 or more days later than wheat. Economic thresholds varied with changes in downy brome density, cost of control, wheat price, and potential wheat yield. In a greenhouse experiment, dry weight of 72-day-old wheat plants grown in association with downy brome was not affected by the distance between the weeds and wheat, whereas downy brome plant dry weight increased with increasing distance between the weeds and wheat.

The effectiveness of postemergence applications of triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl)diisopropylthiocarbamate] for wild oat (Avena fatua L.) control in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. ‘Waldron’) was evaluated in the field and greenhouse. The stage of the wild oat plants at the time of treatment did not appear to influence wild oat control with postemergence applications of triallate in the field; however, in the greenhouse, wild oat plants became more resistant with increased maturation. Granular triallate was more effective than the emulsifiable concentrate for postemergence wild oat control. Fair season-long postemergence wild oat control was obtained with the granular formulation of triallate at rates of 2.24 kg/ha or greater. However, some wheat injury was observed in the field with the 2.80 and 3.36 kg/ha rates of granular triallate. Moisture and temperature influenced postemergence wild oat control with triallate.

Wild oat (Avena fatuaL. ♯3AVEFA) andAvena sterilisL. ♯ AVEST accessions from the United States were screened for tolerance to diallate [S-(2,3-dichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate], triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate], barban (4-chloro-2-butynylm-chlorocarbanilate), diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid}, difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolium), flamprop [N-benzoyl-N-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-DL-alanine], and MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate). Some accessions were tolerant to more than one herbicide but none were tolerant to all herbicides. Tolerance to a herbicide was not restricted to certain areas of origin of the accessions, and tolerant accessions occurred even in locations that had not been treated previously with the herbicide. In general, accessions from Southern California and Arizona were shorter, produced more tillers, and required the least number of days to panicle emergence. However, accessions from within individual areas were nearly as variable in these characteristics as the entire 1200 accessions. Tolerance of accessions to flamprop, difenzoquat, MSMA, and diclofop was not due to low leaf surface area, since the tolerant accessions usually had the most leaf surface area. All the accessions tolerant to difenzoquat, MSMA, and flamprop, and three of the four accessions tolerant to diclofop, tillered less than the susceptible accessions.

The response of ‘Era’ (tolerant) and ‘Coteau’ (susceptible) hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) to CGA-82725 2-propynyl ester of {2-[4- [(3,5-dichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} was determined in field and greenhouse evaluations. Era wheat was most susceptible to CGA-82725 applied at early jointing through the boot stage. Coteau wheat was most susceptible at die two-leaf stage and between early jointing through spike emergence. Coteau was injured more than Era wheat as the CGA-82725 rate was increased from 0.14 to 0.28 kg ai/ha. Wheat grain yield reductions were greatest when CGA-82725 was applied at the early jointing through boot stage for both cultivars and averaged 73% of the control. Absorption and translocation of14C-CGA-82725 were similar and increased over time regardless of cultivar. Most of the absorbed14C remained in the treated leaf in both cultivars.

Twenty-nine wild oat (Avena fatuaL. ♯3AVEFA) andAvena sterilisL. ♯ AVEST accessions having various areas of origin and/or growth characteristics were grown to maturity in controlled environmental chambers. The four environments consisted of a 16-h photoperiod until 3 weeks after emergence, when the photoperiod was decreased (DP) 1 h per week for 8 weeks at a constant 14, 20, or 26 C (DP 14, DP 20, or DP 26); and an 8-h photoperiod until 3 weeks after emergence, when the photoperiod was increased (IP) 1 h per week for 8 weeks at a constant 20 C (IP 20). The relative growth rate of the accessions was similar in each environment. The length of the second leaf was up to 15 cm greater under 8- than 16-h day length at 20 C for some accessions, but was similar under both day lengths for other accessions. The width of the second leaf was greater under 14 than 20 C and was narrower with a 16-h than an 8-h photoperiod. Tiller initiation was slower in the DP 14 and IP 20 than in the DP 20 and DP 26 environments. Days to panicle emergence for individual accessions ranged from 10 to 57 days higher in the DP 14 than in the DP 20 environment. Seed produced on plants grown at 14 C had lower germination in water and 1500 ppm gibberellic acid than seed from plants grown at 20 C. Wild oat accessions varied in morphological characteristics, days to panicle emergence, and dormancy, and responded differently to changes in photoperiod and temperature. Wild oat morphological characteristics, days to panicle emergence, and dormancy did not consistently relate to species or area of origin.

The phytotoxicity of difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolium) applied to the three-leaf stages of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL. ‘Waldron’ and ‘Era’), barley (Hordeum vulgareL. ‘Beacon’) and wild oat (Avena fatuaL. ♯ AVEFA) grown under constant, fluctuating, or alternating day-night temperatures was determined in controlled environment chambers. Difenzoquat injury to wild oat and Era wheat was greater at a constant 20 or 30 than at 10 C; however, injury to Waldron wheat was similar at 10, 20, and 30 C. Difenzoquat caused only slight injury to barley, and injury was similar at all temperatures. In Era wheat, selectivity of difenzoquat for wild oat was maximum with a 10-C night temperature in an otherwise 30-C-temperature environment; in Beacon barley selectivity was maximum with 3 or more days of 20- or 30-C posttreatment temperature; and in Waldron wheat selectivity was not adequate at any of the temperatures studied.

Experiments were conducted in the field, greenhouse, and controlled environmental chambers to determine the injury to sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.) from diclofop (2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid} as influenced by diclofop rate, sunflower line and growth stage, and temperature/relative humidity (RH). Eighteen sunflower lines varied widely in response to diclofop applied postemergence at 2.2 kg/ha with visual injury ratings ranging from 5 to 46%. Neither diclofop-tolerant (Hybrids 894 and 903) nor diclofop-susceptible (Hybrid 923 and Inbred HA290) sunflower lines were injured by diclofop at 10 C. Diclofop injured all four sunflower lines at 30 C. Sunflower injury following diclofop application at 30 C was greater at 90% RH than at 40% RH; and the diclofop-susceptible lines were injured more than the diclofop-tolerant lines. Diclofop injury to sunflower at the two- to four-leaf stage was greater than at any other growth stage in the field and greenhouse. Seed yields of sunflower (Hybrid 894) treated with diclofop in the two- and four-leaf stage was reduced 15 and 12% compared to that of untreated weed-free sunflower, respectively, averaged over diclofop rates.

The effects of various densities and durations of wild oat (Avena fatuaL.) competition in soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr. ‘Evans’] were determined in the field during a 2-yr period. Season-long competition by densities of 1, 3,9, and 30 wild oat plants/m of row reduced soybean seed yield an average of 6, 17, 32, and 51%, respectively. An infestation of 30 wild oat plants/m of row did not reduce soybean yield if the period of competition was limited to 4 weeks after crop emergence; however, yields were reduced 29, 50, 63, 58, and 63% when wild oat competed for 5, 6, 7, and 8 weeks, or season long, respectively. Wild oat competition reduced soybean pods per plant and seeds per plant more than seeds per pod or seed weight.

The absorption, translocation, and metabolism of the methyl ester of diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenoxy] propanoic acid} by three sunflower (Helianthus annuusL.) lines was determined at 10 and 30C. Sunflower absorbed up to 27% more14C-diclofop while growing at 30C and 90 ± 5% relative humidity (RH) than at 10C and 40 ± 10% RH. Absorption of diclofop by susceptible (170415) and tolerant (296292 and Hybrid 894) sunflower lines was similar. Translocation of14C out of the treated sunflower leaf was greater at 30 (1.3%) than 10C (0.5%) 192 h after treatment when averaged across sunflower lines. The diclofop-susceptible line exported more of the applied diclofop from the treated leaf to the shoot portion below the treated leaf than the tolerant lines. Metabolism of diclofop was more rapid at 30 than 10C; however, the three sunflower lines metabolized diclofop similarly.

Experiments were conducted in the field and laboratory from 1978 to 1981 to determine the effect of crop residues, manure, and inorganic nitrogen on wild oat (Avena fatua L. ♯3 AVEFA) seed (seed as used here represents an intact floret) dormancy. Turkey manure usually stimulated wild oat seed germination more than crop residue, cow manure, or inorganic nitrogen. Seed germination of different wild oat accessions varied in response to turkey manure. Germination of dormant seed in water was stimulated after 8 weeks or after overwintering in the presence of turkey manure in the field and after 10 days in the presence of turkey manure in petri dishes in the laboratory. Turkey manure caused growth of wild oat shoots in petri dishes, but usually roots were absent. A nonmicrobial, water-soluble component of turkey manure was responsible for stimulating wild oat seed germination. Turkey manure treatment of dormant wild oat seed increased the percentage of seed that would not germinate in gibberellic acid. Germination of nondormant wild oat seed of Accession 77 was reduced, but Accession 64 was unaffected by turkey manure. Germination of wild oat was low when the seeds overwintered on the soil surface, regardless of seed age or length of overwintering.

Wild oat (Avena fatuaL.) seedlings were exposed to vapors arising from soil treated with triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl)diisopropylthiocarbamate]. Vapor from the liquid triallate formulation inhibited seedling growth more than vapor from the granular formulation, and the degree of inhibition was least in Fargo clay, intermediate in Hecla sandy loam and greatest in washed sand. Growth inhibition from vapors of soil-applied liquid or granular triallate increased as soil moisture content and soil temperature increased. The site of effective vapor action on wild oat seedlings was below the soil surface.

The phytotoxicity of postemergence propanil (3′,4′-dichloropropionanilide) to hard red spring (HRS) wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) was determined in the field and controlled environmental chamber. HRS wheat tolerance to propanil was influenced by cultivar, crop growth stage at time of application, and posttreatment temperature. Injury to wheat from propanil was greater at the five- than two-leaf stage of application and at 30- than at 10- or 20-C posttreatment temperatures. ‘Butte’ wheat was the most susceptible HRS wheat cultivar to propanil, with yield reductions ranging from 15 to 40% depending upon year and crop growth stage at application.
